Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Very disappointed!! My daughter got a very bad 1st and 4th grade teachers. She is an outstanding student but was discouraged most of the time and was getting yelled at by her 4th grade teacher when asked clarifications on any subjects. She is an old teacher who needs to frankly retire and not capable enough to teach 4th and 5th split. She didn't even have certificates ready to give out on the last day of school assembly. She was stressed all the time in the classroom that stressed kids especially the anxious kids. Very demotivating! Unwelcoming classroom teacher that I have ever seen! On the other hand Mr. Swisley is an AWESOME teacher. He needs to be rewarded the BEST TEACHER OF THE YEAR!! This school is very political and has a bad leadership. Best teachers in the school that my daughter had are Mrs. Irvine (who moved to Junction elementary) and Mr. Swisley. Teachers are suppose to make a difference in a child's life. If you are not that kind of a teacher at least don't discourage and demotivate the kids.

Very disappointed!! Could not disagree with the previous comments. Kids have done extreme hard work through out the year and did not even get a simple certificate. That shows the teacher did not do her job. Retire is simpler word. I leave it up to the school to decide what to do in future if they have to keep students interested in the school.

I had high hopes for this school but unfortunately I was dissapointed. I agree with the last review. The staff members are very rude. Especially that older lady with the strong foreign accent. She is just RUDE! Never says hi, thank you, welcome. Def. makes you feel like she is doing you a favor by being there! Although I must say, Michelle is sweet and cordial. Regarding the teachers, I can say some are horrible and some are ok. So your child has to be lucky. If you child is a slow learner beware! They are almost abandoned to the corner of the class all day. This seems to be happening very often as I have seen it with different classrooms.

Bad customer service :( I recently moved and my home school is Catheryn Gates. I came to enroll my kids. As moment I walked in the office I felt unwelcomed. The staff in the front desk are rude and unfriendly. I felt that if I was treated this way kids would be treated even worst. I rather drive 30 minutes and take them to school where they would receive love and care and great education. The way I see is if you can't work in the front desk with people then your place is in warehouse with boxes.

I have a third child going through Gates, I also have adult children in their late twenties who attended Private Christian School. I am very thankful that academically, there is very little difference. I really enjoyed working with Mrs. Baichtal and was saddened to see her go but I am sure our new principal will be great too and I am looking forward to an awesome fun filled school year and meeting other like minded parents who love getting involved with their childrens education.

I love this school and feel blessed my son attends Gates. I would have given 5 stars BUT they seem to do little about all of parents who don't follow the parking/loop rules. There is usually a staff member standing out in the loop area everyday, BUT rarely do anything! Some parents do not pull up as far as they should (leaving many cars backed up on the street) and I feel the staff member should be motioning for people to pull up farther, NOT get out of their cars, etc!!! But they just stand there.. and many lame parents insist on turning in the wrong direction, making even more traffic on the street. If Gates would start doing something about traffic issues, I would be happy to give a 5 star rating.. Gates is great!

I use to be very involved at Gates, but because of its politics and how the school is run like a dictatorship and not a democracy is so unfortunant. I have learned in all my years with the Roseville City School District that parents 'concerns' are viewed as complaints and if you don't like the way the school is ran, your told to find a different school. Thank goodness my students for the most part have been fortunant enough to of had good teachers. With all the support Gates gets from parents like myself you would think we would be treated better.

Good test scores. Most of the teachers differentiate their teaching. Children are recognized for reading and it can be very competitive. Some of the kids get 1000+ points. What parent doesn't love that type of competition! Finally a competition where everyone wins. The school recently got Accelerated Math which also challenges the kids. Concerns about the principal are valid but she is new to the job and will hopefully become more comfortable dealing with parents concerns.

I agree whole heartily with some of parent's comments about the clicky parents and favortism. The atmosphere is vicious and I try to keep to myself. I volunteer and am very active in my son's education but the vicious gossip that is tollerated by the staff is unacceptable. I am considering a different school.

It is very frustrating to hear other parent's responses to those who might not be as satisfied with certain aspects of the school. Just because a parent might see room for improvement does not mean they need to take their kids and their so called 'negativity' and leave. I am a parent who spends a lot of time volunteering in the classroom, I go to PTC meetings, and I contribute and assist with fundraisers. However, when my child had an issue with one of the yard duties I coudln't get anyone to talk to me to work it out. I left 2 messages with the principal and never got a call back. Overall I have been happy with the teachers and all the fun activities and field trips, but not with the administration. Parent phone calls should always be returned.

Every child should be so lucky to attend such a wonderful elementary school as Catheryn Gates. Little credence should be given to the all too vocal minority of parents who, for some reason, seem to thrive on nit-picking every action by our outstanding principal rather than focusing on the overwhelmingly positive learning atmosphere that has been created by the principal, her dedicate professional support staff, the students and parents of Gates. Go Explorers!

Catheryn Gates is a truly awesome school. First there s the library, an amazing collection of books at all levels. Our wonderful librarian keeps the library open as much as possible so students have many opportunities during the school day to get books. She reads to all of the classes and instills such a love of reading in the students. The second is the yearly musical. It is choreographed by dedicated teachers and is staffed by teacher/parent volunteers. Many students have an opportunity to participate. Everyone works very hard and the performances are terrific. The third is the school carnival in May. Every year, the carnival gets better and better! There are games, inflatables (including the Giant Slide), demonstrations, animals, cotton candy, and snow cones. Everyone has an awesome time, and the kids look forward to this event all year long. What a fantastic way to end the school year!

I am puzzled how any parent could not love Gates school. My son has never enjoyed school so much as at this place. He says they have partys and fun activitys all the time and lots of times he cant finish his work at school because their is so much going on. He likes the large amount of afterschool and nighttime entertainments to. We came from a small school in a different state. It had great acedemics but a lot less activitys. California schools seem more round. Sometime my son has trouble to focus and getting his school work done. We try to help him with that at home. His teacher has a lot of student who need help. It is hard for her to give him much time. She was so nice and gave us good material to use with him at home.

My children have learned so much at Catheryn Gates. The quality of the teachers is quite high. And the level of parental involvement is incredible. Many of us who volunteer at the school have had children at Gates for many years. We are volunteers (PTC, art docents, volunteers in class, lead committees, etc.), and we make significant contributions to the school and its students. We are hoping that next year the administrative staff will be more open to parent suggestions and much less defensive and negative. We would like to work with the principal on many issues and would like to continue to have a positive impact on the school. We would prefer not to have to leave the school as others have been asked to do.

Wow, this year has been interesting. In all our years at Gates I have never seen so much negativity towards parents with concerns. The atmosphere on campus has changed dramatically, especially if you are one of those parents that has expressed your opinions or concerns. It feels like your back in high school with the clicks among the staff and parents. Our school was never like this before, so ask yourself this question, where does the real problem originate from?

I have worked very closely with my son's teacher to help keep him challenged. I love the Accelerated Math program and the Accelerated Reading program at Catheryn Gates. Both help challenge the child who needs a little bit more than the classroom can offer. I love the reward system of charms for reading. I think it is so sad that we are asking parents to take their child and leave our school when all they want is a great school. Maybe they could cluster kids and place them with teachers who are willing to challenge them.

Parent involvement is great. Teachers are great! The 'negativism' referred to here is about people who have given large amounts of volunteer time and postive energy to the school for at least the past 5 years, quietly giving time and energy, never writing letters, never causing 'problems'. The turmoil the school is in now didn't exist a few years ago and the critized parents were here then. There is a reason there are 36 comments on this website compared to 8 for neighboring schools. Come to our school. It is great, but be cautious and ask yourself why there is suddenly so much termoil that hadn't existed before. If you are telling other people to leave the school because they have opinions that are different than yours and wish a forum to address them, I say, have an open mind!

My wife and I love this school. The teachers and principal are wonderful and all are easy to approach and talk to. My biggest concern is that there are parents at this school that do not have the schools best interest. There are parents that send letters to anyone they can to write negative things about the teachers and the princippal. Our experiences have all been wonderful.

Catheryn Gates is an amazing school. The teaching staff and principle are dedicated to our childrens education and making Catheryn Gates a great place to be. It is extremely disappointing that a few parents (with their own personal agenda) would critize a school as great as ours. To you, I would say if you feel so passionately against this amazing school why in the world are your kids still here? Why not take them to another school? Perhaps you know that your kids are in the best school and it is just you that needs to focus your attention on something that positive.

Our school district has made differentiation (i.e., teaching to a student s particular level) a major focus. It is up to each teacher to find the time and resources to make this happen. Our second grade teacher at Gate was fabulous and worked diligently to meet each child s needs. All students, whether struggling or achieving, learned so much in her class. However, we have been disappointed with the fourth grade GATE cluster. We are 100 days into the 180-day school year, and the students have not been given any GATE assignments. We don t understand why the students were tested for GATE in the third grade when there is no fourth grade GATE program.

This is our sixth year at Gates. The school has had fine teachers and high API scores since it opened. Our dedicated teachers and our students work hard to produce such excellent academic results. We have had three principals during this time; since the scores have been quite consistent, I don t think the change in principals has made any difference. I do wish our current principal could more effectively address issues such as bullying and the current lunch/recess schedule which doesn t give students enough time to eat. Her focus seems to be on more fun activities such as wearing pajamas to school and dancing on the stage.

I enrolled my children after moving from another state earlier this year. What an amazing school. I volunteer for all of my kid's teachers, and do some support work for the PTC. I have been so impressed with so many aspects of this school, and I believe it all starts and ends with the principal. I say to all who have a personal vendetta against her fo visit another campus. See the interaction of the principal there with the students. Do they treat ALL students with the same amount of respect? Do they make themselves visible on all levels? Do they appraoch the children, or do the children approach them? Please go to another school. Take your children and you mean and nasty agendas with you and stay there. You do nothing positive for our wonderful school.

My daughter has attended Catheryn Gates for 5 years and I am proud of the excellent quality of education she has received. I was appalled that some parents feel the current principal is not available and are disappointed in her leadership. I have been at this school through 3 principals and you will never find a more visible source of leadership. Would you ever have seen the previous principals of Gates wear their pajamas and dance and sing with the children? It sounds trivial, but she is there for the teachers, students, and parents. Just because some don t like what she has to say, doesn t mean she doesn t care. I know much is made of Gates high test scores- this would not happen if a school were solely academic driven. The ability to produce consistently high marks is the product of an environment that cares about the whole student and their families. If anyone disagrees, try visiting another school, then you will see why Gates is so special!

Catheryn Gates is an AMAZING school. I have had nothing but positive experiences with the principal, teachers and office staff. I am amazed by the negativity within some of the comments that have been posted about our school and I wonder if those parents have ever been to any elementary school other than Gates. If they have, they would know that compared to many others, Gates is a school that goes above and beyond academically. The high API score proves that. As far as the critics of the new principal are concerned, I ask them if they have ever seen another principal stand out in the parking lot and direct cars in the rain? How can people even question her dedication to her students and her school? She has been a breath of fresh air to our school and has created many new and wonderful traditions for our kids. They love her!

Catheryn Gates is the perfect elementary school! The teachers, staff and especially the principal are amazing. The school has a great PTC or Parent Teacher Club that does so much to add to and improve the school. I've read the other reviews listed and am shocked to see any negative remarks about our principal who goes so far above and beyond for the students and their families. I'm very involved in the school and PTC and am so glad that my son is part of this wonderful school.

Good luck talking to the principal or getting any concerns addressed. If you are serious about change just go to the district. Parents are being discouraged from being involved with their child's education. A letter was sent to all parents outlining the 'rules'. If we need to talk to our kid's teacher we must set up a formal meeting and we are not allowed to observe the class during times of instruction! Forget open door policy at this school.

It is the parents involvement, giving of money and supporting their students academically that makes Catheryn Gates a good school. Our Principals fresh and new ideas came with her from her previous school. The new Principal has made changes with disregard towards the students and how it has affected them negatively. Our PTC is very strong and has done a lot of wonderful things for our school. Unfortunately, the new Principal wants to use the money that is supposed to benefit all that attend our school for items that are not a priority and for the minority. Our school has excelled since it opened and it will continue to excel no matter who our Principal is, because it is the teachers and the parents that have made our school what it is today, and it is too bad the new Principal does not see that.

This as an awesome school! The new principal is great, she has many new and fresh ideas. Unfortunately we have some parents that think they run the school, but the principal is quick to remind them that the running of the school is best left to the professionals. :) The children learn more than the State of CA requires them to know to meet standards. I have had two kids attend and one went on to become a straight a student and the other is well on their way as well. This school is the school to attend.

Both my children attend Gates. I have volunteered weekly for the past 3 years and have been amazed by the differentiated teaching the staff is able to provide to the student body. Those of various abilities are taught and challenged at their own levels. Staff attend meetings and discuss what works and does not work within their classroom and share ideas amongst themselves in order to improve the quality of education across their own grade level. The PTC is very active, as is parent involvement. School staff, be it janitorial, secretarial, teachers and principal, are truly dedicated to providing a nurturing, educational environment. Parental involvement within the school only serves to shore up what is already a challenging educational environment. Homework and in-class curriculum may seem difficult at first, but the attentive teaching staff is able to track the student body and keep them performing at or above grade level.

Principal is rarely available to talk with the parents when they have a problem. Catheryn Gates is a great school for the average child. The school is great at teaching the standard. If your child is advance you may have a problem getting challenging school work. A lot is dependent on the teacher and the quality of teachers vary widely. It can be the luck of the draw until they get into the Gate program. Just be prepared to supplement your child's education.

My daughter is a third grader and has attended this school since kindergarten. Catheryn Gates is so great that the class rooms are full to the brim, don't let that fool you into thinking your childs education will be neglected, each teacher knows it's an honor to teach at this school, and to work with truly dedicated parents. Informational voicemails are sent directly from Principal to parents phone. School newsletters are sent home weekly; if your child 'forgets' their homework each teacher has a hotline for weekly and daily homework curriculums. If you don't have time to do school work with your child this is not the school for you! This school is hands on for our kids future!!

My Kindergarten son is independent-minded and has some trouble focusing on his work. His teacher, Mrs. Jew has done an excellent job of working with us to help him excell, both socially and academically. Though he still has an occasional tough morning, his behavior and his learning curve are both greatly improved and I credit his teacher, as well as the high ratio of adults to children in the classroom. Where else do you have two fully-credentialed teachers, an aide, and a parent helper present in a class of only 20 Kindergartners? Nowhere that I have heard of!

My child started Kindergarten at Catheryn Gates in the 04-05 school year. So far I have been pleased with the academics. I was surprised that they were being given homework in Kindergarten but thankful for the extra practice it affords. I do question whether the homework is being reviewed or corrected.
