Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My son goes to the high school. He auditioned to get in. I am seriously considering taking him out. First off, it's way overcrowded. On parent teacher day I was horrified to see in my son's art class there were so many students that there were not enough seats for all of them. About a dozen kids literally had to stand in the back. Second, I've called on a few occasions and left message, once to my son'e counselor and another to front staff, and not ONCE have I received a call back from staff. My son has ADHD but tested into gate, but I see he is falling through the cracks more. Unless your child can fend for himself without a seat or attentive staff, then they too will fall through the cracks.

The campus is very nice, has a college feel. The office staff very friendly. My only concern about SCPA is that when I compared different middle school and high school API scores within the last 5 yrs in Southeast San Diego, Paradise Hils and South Bay, so many scored a lot higher than SCPA! I compared all of them with SCPA (last 5 yrs) and I was disapponited. SCPA has excellent Language scores, but their chemistry, math, science, biology, physics and algebra scores were really bad compared to other SDUSD middle and high schools. I couldn't believer that. Sure, your child is getting exposure to the arts (singing, performing, music etc...) quite a benefit, but unless your child (or you) really expect your child to become a professional actor or musician, is it worth such low scores in all other academic areas? My kids want to be doctors and engineers. SCPA's arts program was appealing, but in the end it was jointly decided that they needed a school with strong math and science scores. They now go to another school on University Ave that has EXCELLENT math & science scores. In the long run we feel that will benefit their long term career goals and we're happy with the decision.

If I could rate this school I'll do it with zero, my daughter had the most horrible time there, she was victim of bullying there. If your are thinking to send your children there think twice, they have wonderful artistic teachers but have the worst criteria to act to protect the students. I am not the first parent to have to remove my child from SCPA as a result of inaction about bullying. SCPA throwing away a talented, har working student and protect people that does not deserve this privilege . I will never recommend SCPA. I could not do it in good conscience.

I can now say retrospectively that SCPA is a very good school. As a parent, having seen firsthand, my children experience other SD city schools and now appreciating what SCPA has to offer.

This school is terrible. My son went there. Most of the children are mean and cruel, in the middle school. The high school might be good, but the middle school is terrible. The teachers act like they do not have enough time for there students, they just make them do busy work all day, without even paying attention, students are on they're phones. They do not deal with issues well. They waited over 3 months to deal with a threat issue with my son. They need to hire new vice principals. Honestly TERRIBLE. They are not well trained. They did not even solve the problem with my son. Terrible school. I wish I could rate it ZERO STARS.

I went here for 6th and 7th grade and i did not like it . the teachers are rude and they don't care about the students. they are always sitting on there laptops complaing how we don't listen. they don't interact with the children what so every. they expect us to get what they teach . then when they give us the test the stuff on there is not what we learned. I would not recommend this school to anybody because they don't give the students the help they needed. And the teachers give referrals for walking to class

My daughter has attended SCPA since 6th grade. While she enjoyed it, I think they could have done a bit more for the Jr. High kids with getting them ready for 8th grade auditions. I asked about this from the day she set foot on the campus. Now in 8th grade, and having not passed the audition to the High School part, I fee this school did little to help me prepare my child for the high school auditions. Not to mention in the middle of the first 6 weeks of school they "cold" transferred her 3 times in one week without warning due to "budget cuts." However after research API score and such for high school, I finally got my daughter to be comfortable with not attending SCPA High School next year. I am sending her to more traditional High school setting and I told her she will thank me later! In regards to the previous poster's concerned about the misbehaving students. Yes I agree, however it's not necessarily the school's fault but is moreso the parents of those student's fault!!

My son attended 6th grade and had significant problems with the children and the staff. There were only two 6th grade teachers that were well organized and able to handle the several kids they taught. I sat in several classes and was extremely disappointed. There was a large amount of behavioral problems with the children in Jr High. Every time I came to office there were always several kids in trouble from the Jr High. Vice principal in charge of Jr High discipline communicated well but I felt made some poor discipline decisions. We applied to this school specifically for the music program. Music program for 6th grade was not what I had expected from a performing arts school.. It was very disorganized partly because of several uninterested children in the music program. We spent a large amount of time speaking with the superintendent regarding school problems. I would not recommend sending your kids to this school if they are attending Jr. High. High school may be better but I am unsure since none of our children attended the high school.

I went there for six years and will never forget any of them. I met some of the most inspirational teachers and people i think i will ever meet in my life. Great school for discovering yourself and learning how to appreciate learning and thinking in a different perspective. Even when i wasn't doing so well in my classes i always had support and help from teachers who never lost faith in me. For the students who truly want to have a future in any career related to the arts and highly recommend perfecting your skills at this school. I don't know where i would be without growing up there.

My child entered this year as a 9th grader. She loves her electives and loves her fellow students. Artistic kids feel right at home at SCPA and everyone is very friendly. We love the P.E. Options and rich elective choices. We live 17 miles away and depend on transportation and gladly pay the fee asked by SDUSD. SCPA is well known for drama, music and dance. I feel the school should recognize and showcase their Fine Artists more often.

As a former professional actor, musician, dancer and singer in my teens I couldn't wait to get my daughter into a school such as yours. It's the stepping stone to a wonderful experience in life that no one can imagine unless you go there. I am so thankful that my daughter gets to experience this. SCPA is a creative and performing arts magnet school where Arts and Academics truly share center stage. The arts curriculum is integrated into the school day unlike other educational arts programs where the art classes are held after the regular school day has ended. Also, the academic and arts teachers work hand in hand to enable the students to flourish in their chosen art major while still preparing them for entrance into the college of their choice.

San Diego SCPA is an amazing school. SCPA gives students endless possibilities for their future. The school has an amazing, and incredibly supportive staff. SCPA isn't just a school, but it's a family. Working on performances with classmates builds very strong, long lasting relationships. The school has an incredibly accepting group of students, students can be who they are with no judgement. SCPA is a wonderful environment for all.

This school truly shows us why it is important to keep arts programs active in our public school system. The students here are some of the most well rounded and talented bunch of kids you will ever encounter. SCPA has not only enriched me academically and artistically but it has also shaped me into the fine young adult I am today. The only people that did not enjoy their time here were the people that did not get involved in any of the wonderful performance opportunities this place has to offer, or they were the people that have been here since the sixth grade who were just looking for a healthy change of pace. Not a typical high school experience, but the best I could have hoped for.

SCPA does the best that they can to better the arts AND academics for the students. With the districts insane budget crisis, yes, class sizes have grown drastically, but that's not the adminstrations fault at all. With the major program, the diversity of the arts classes are restricted, and that's unfortunate for those who are still undecided or want to participate in multiple arts, but it allows students to have to dedicate to an art, instead of giving up. I've personally never had a problem with lack of response through phone or e-mail communication with either the administration or teachers. Some teachers' phones don't record messages, and sometimes e-mails just don't go through. The best way to ensure contact is to go in and ask the person the best way to contact them. As I said before, SCPA does the best they can, and truly deserve this money.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the School for the Performing Arts. I visited Mr. Farson's classroom . I came away with the most uplifting feeling about the way his class was conducted and the way students responded to his excitement about the materials they were studying. Students not only invited us to visit the choral and theatre departments but came to Mr. Farson's room to escort us. I've lived in the midwest all of my life and had a much different idea of what to expect when I came for a visit. Students were friendly and it was easy to see they were delighted to be going to school there. The school is very fortunate to have great teachers and an admininstration that supports them as well as the students. Keep up the GREAT WORK......

SCPA is an arts magnet public school for students in grades 6 through 12. The school has very rigorous academi and arts curriculum that focus on preparing students to go to college. Some of the schools where graduaes are attending are the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, CALArts, UCLA-Irvine, Boston University and UCSD, just to mention some. Because the school has a selection process, students addmitted are driven and focus on learning. The environment is safe and the teachers are experienced and dedicated profesionals. the school hs partneship with renound orgnizations souch as the The Old Globe Theater, and the San Diego Opera were students are giving the opportunity to prticipae with professional artists. The scholl has two tathers and an ehibition area were students can perform and share their work. I have attended to several performances and exhibitions, this are not your typical schools plays, or exhibitions. As an epectator for moments you forgot that they are only students. Their level and commitment is amazing. Some of the allimini students have won Tony awards. My daughter attend to this school, She is a very talented visual arts artist. By attending to this school she has been able to improve her skills Let me repeat it again the school has a selection process, tht tell you a lot. It is the best school of creative and performing arts, and the best is a public school.

It is a school like no other. This place saves kids. We are all artist here, and a normal high school would never be enough for some students. We grow as artists every day, working hard to reach set goals. But also, you grow as a person. You learn how to be confident and proud of yourself. These are life skills that we all will need once we leave, even if we don't go on in the arts. SCPA is a very special school, and everyone is blessed who has the chance to learn there.

I first liked this school i am a former student it had many electives to choose from way more then any other school for example taking dance and martial arts for P.E class. when i first started in 6th grade there was a many electives i wanted to to take like photography, technical theatre and many more. I was told by all the adults that i had to wat till i was in high school. So i waited and by the time i got to 8th grade they made us audition into a art and whatever we got into we had to stay with for 4 years. Well got in to drama which is fun but that meant i couldnt do any other arts that i waited 3years for. other than getting the arts iv been waiting for. The teachers are great very out going.

I am an SCPA alumni and I always found SCPA to be an amazing opportunity for me. I don't know what would have happened if I had attended another school, and I don't want to know. SCPA gave me a chance to explore the Arts while still allowing me to excel in academics. In fact, the year I graduated, we had the largest AP Calculus class in the history of our county. There are great programs that allow students the opportunity to choose their electives. For example: a student doesn't just have to choose PE. They can take Physical Education, a variety of Dances, Martial Arts, or even Weight Lifting. Of course, certain classes have special requirements, just like college courses. You can't take Advanced Martial Arts without having been in the Beginning Martial Arts, just like you couldn't take Discreet Math without having passed Honors Pre Calculus.

I have gone to this school for 3 years now and about to start my 4th. I feel my experience so far has been amazing. Sure the school has its problems now and then but no school can ever be perfect. This school has grown a lot since my first year attending. With a new principal, she has whipped the school into shape..making it more arts focused...dont worry parents the academic side is better then ever as well. She has high school students starting art majors which is pretty exciting because I will be part of the first to ever do this. The changes she has made is exciting to be apart of because through all the difficulties we form a better more qualified school...kinda like making a beautiful diamond. This school will keep growing and growing into a better school so watch out you other schools!

I have 2 teen boys at this school, I agree with the comments about discipline and counseling. Only irritated replies from the counseling office, if you are lucky enough to get a response at all! Schools are always harping about parent involvement but I have gotten the impression that I am just being annoying by asking questions. Alternatively, the Dance and Theatre Departments are exceptional and rare in this era of arts cut-backs. The music department is amazing as well. Almost every teacher that I have talked to about my sons is dedicated and helpful, even without behavioral support from the counseling office

My daughters experience at SCPA has been outstanding! I have only had one bad experience with one of her science teachers, and the administration handled the problem in a very timely manor. This is my daughters 4th year and I can tell you she wouldn't go to any other school. She is getting above and beyond everything she needs academically as well as the dancing she loves. The atmosphere on campus is that of acceptance and unity among the students. They take pride in their school and are uncommonly supportive of each other! At times the office staff has been a bit disorganized and realizing that nothing is perfect, and sometimes things aren't the way we think they should be, I can say I would greatly recommend this school to anyone looking for great a education and arts for their child. Glad I found this school!

SCPA is a fabulous school, if you get involved. The school suffers from a lack of counseling and support, just like every other school in SDUSD. Parents need to stop complaining and help out. Your child can receive and excellent education at SCPA, but it doesn't happen by itself. Children go onto wonderful universities from SCPA, but only with support.

I have a daughter that graduated from scpa and recently graduated from USC and her experience was very positive at scpa. Currently have a son that is a senior and times have changed dramatically. Administration could care less about the kids. They won't return phone calls and when they discipline unruly students it is a joke. They don't get to the root of problems. If my local school were better I would not send my kids to scpa anymore.

Our daughter is finishing the middle school at scpa and we are pleased to have had her there and are hoping that she'll be able to make the tranisition to the high school. The atmosphere is much more peaceful, tolerant of individuality, and generally encouraging than other middle schools we've had experience with. When our daughter has had to deal with the usual sort hostility that kids can inflict on each other the staff has always been right there for her as well as us. Our daughter has had a good time in the visual and performing arts and humanities and less so in math and science. The science teacher she's had 2x is clearly coasting until retirement and the math program is a hostage to high stakes testing. We hear better things about the math and sciences in the high school, so we're hopeful.

I worry that the academic programs are sadly lacking. If my child were not enrolled in advanced and honors classes, we would be looking for another school. The students attending 'normal' classes are barely qualified to graduate, in my mind. Very low standards for academic achievement.

Academics were spotty. My daughter had some excellent teachers. Her economics teacher had them watch 'The Apprentice' repeatedly in class as a lesson in economics. Her english teachers were outstanding, encouraging her to enter writing contests, etc., outside the school. The school is a magnet school, pulling kids in from all over the city. They've had a problem with scheduling events to start at 4:30 or 5:00 - which does not allow working parents to take off or take off early enough to beat the rush-hour traffic. We typically got notices from the school days after whatever the notice was about had happened. Improved in recent years, but still 'iffy.' It's a great place for non-conformists, as there seems to be one of every variety of kid there. Given the level of academics/outside activities available in the 'regular' high schools, I'd definitely send my kid there agin.

SCPA is a wonderful place for any student who wants to pursue the arts, or just wants to have more time for creative classes. SCPA has 7 periods giving students 2 electives not including PE or dance. There's a wide variety of arts such as dance, art, music, band, photography, technical theatre, acting, singing, etc. When you first enter the school, theres a choice to chose an art wheel if youre undecided on what you want to take. It allows you to experience everything. Also, academics are very important. C or better to stay in the school. Parents have to spend some money for their children in the arts, but its well worth it because they have oppurtunities to perform on a stage. 2 mainstage, 2 dance concerts, 2 music concerts in the grand theatre, and shows in the Little Theathre, + art shows

My daughter loves the school and the arts especially. She is exposed to many things her neighborhood friends don't have at their school. My main problem i have is with some of the teachers. We i tried to contact them about my childs progress only 1 out of 4 returned my call. One teacher i called and left 4 messages and i finally had to go down there in person and demand a mtg with her. For another i had to leave messages then send a note for her to call me. And this is from a parent who went to open house and talked to each teacher individually. I know the classes are large but if there is a parent who cares and is involved you'd think they would welcome that.

My problem with this school is the low overall emphasis on academics. Classes are very large (over 35 students in some) and they have very few GATE spots, so unless your child is GATE identified they do not get placed in a GATE class. The vice-pricincipal seems to have little if no consideration for communication with parents.

After 2 years at this school, communication is still below what I feel is necessary for quality education for children. There's lots of talk, but very poor follow through on the parts of some at the school. We love the arts/dance/theater programs, purhaps some of the academic teachers should learn to enjoy their choosen fields, like the arts teachers do! If you don't like dealing with pre-teen/teenagers, move on! Don't take out your frustrations on those who are looking to you to educate them with care and enthusiam. Remember these are our children and our future, please handle with love and care and treat them with respect and give them a sense of feeling that their opinion does matter. thanks

I got a chance to meet some of the kids at this school and see them interact with each other and there teacher Ms Fetters. I am telling you I already liked this school before, but it showed me that this is the perfect school for my daughter. The only regreat I have is there wasn't a school like this for me when I was a kid and I didn't get my other daughter in before. When ever I go to the school it's never dirty with trash or have I ever heard a cuss word out of a student. My daughter said she never wants to go to any other school but SCPA. I have two kids that attend the school. I think the school has lost alot of excellent teachers and administrators. I feel alot of these people did care about our kids education. Some of these teachers and administrators have left i do feel because of top administations. I do feel this is a part of the school that really needs help. There seems to be alot of tension between teachers and administrators. The staff needs to work as a team to make the school better.

SCPA has a wonderful campus atmosphere and has many excellent teachers. Similarly, we have a good selection of clubs for the students to participate in. At present the school suffers from a recent loss of teachers who will be sorely missed, and slightly lacks leadership and dicipline. I would say that the biggest downfall about SCPA is its lack of a sports program, as there are no sports teams whatsoever and the PE program is a bit weak, though in place of sports we put on various Musical, Dance and Theatrical productions.
