Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My son has been at Clarendon since kindergarten, and is now in his last year, in the fifth grade. Clarendon has such a stellar reputation as an elementary school, I felt like we won the lottery when my son was accepted - and we DID. It's like getting the best $200,000 private school education, but at a public school, for free. The staff is outstanding, and the teachers are extremely caring and dedicated to teaching - and the parent community is so supportive and amazing, we've made so many lifelong friends, we've all even planned camping vacations together. My son learned to speak and write Japanese in the Japanese immersion program, and has learned so many creative skills with all of the resources available - art, music, chess. The before and after-school program headed by Shelley is also fantastic, and educational, too - they oversee that your child has help completing homework! I am actually heartsick that our time at Clarendon must end because my son will graduate from the 5th grade this year - I wish it went to the 8th grade! I feel so lucky and blessed our son was able to attend - it really is the best school any parent can hope for.

I feel so lucky that my children go to Clarendon. The teachers are great, knowledgeable and caring. The curriculum is excellent, with enrichment programs such as music and Italian. Yes, my children learn Italian at Clarendon and can even speak some of it. One of my children has special need, the Principal, teachers and staff work together to help her and our entire family. The Principal, Mr. Van Court is a wonderful leader. He is caring, attentive and accessiable. He listens to the needs of various students and families and tries his best to fulfill those needs. He made sure that every aspect of school stands out. He even knows every student by their name. I am very impressed as a parent. The teachers are very creative in teaching. Everyday, my children come back home telling us how excited they are at school and what they learned new. I hope all the elementary schools could have the same excellence as Clarendon.

Oh, Clarendon, we love you. My child is so happy to head off to school each day. I'm thrilled with how much she is learning, without sacrificing social/emotional learning and the fun stuff like field trips. It seems like a great mix. Expect to be asked to volunteer a lot (in the class and for special events), and receive many fundraising requests---but I'm sensing this is the new norm in many public schools---but it all seems worth it for a great school.

Clarenden Alternative is one of San Francisco's academically top elementary schools. In addition to a strong curriculum, Clarendon offers 2 foreign language programs, an art program, music (with instrumental music lessons starting in 4th grade, computer instruction and after-school drama, among other programs. Additionally, this school is one of SF's most culturally diverse.

When I was touring San Francisco schools, I fell in love with Clarendon. I liked it even more than some of the private schools I looked at. It has it all - foreign language, art, PE, computers, library, music, etc. Plus it has a great community of involved parents and heart. My daughter loves going to school here, and I feel like I won the lotto!

I have had tow children go through the JBBP program. Both the JBBP progam and the school enjoy an abundance of 'extra' classes that were staples when I was a kid. I have also had the piece of mind that my children are taken care of and are safe in the 'school in the trees'. This is a wonderful school .

This is now our second year at Clarendon. In these times of horrible budget cuts in California, Clarendon still manages to be a great school. I am so impressed with their teachers and administration. And the parent support is amazing. I have never been so happy to donate money for a cause as I have for the future of Clarendon. The parents do a fantastic job of raising money for student activities that the state does not fund. I cannot say enough good things about this school, it's staff and the school community. I feel blessed to have my son attending this great school

This is our second year at Clarendon in the JBBP program. I cannot say enough good things about this school and it's staff. The teachers are great. We currently have Ms. Fujiwara for 1st grade. She is a passionate, dynamic teacher that does a fantastic job. The school community is great with lots of parental support in every way possible. The school raises money for many activities the kids would never get otherwise. Clarendon should be what all public schools attain to be in California. If all the schools were like Clarendon, we would have a much better education system here. Anyone lucky enough to get thier kids into this school is truly lucky....getting into this great school kept us in San Francisco versus moving to the suburbs.

Our daughter is starting first grade. We were completely impressed by the quality of her kindergarten education. Mrs. Morimoto is an amazing teacher with years of experience. I hope she never retires. The new principal seems to be wonderful and very approachable. Parents are gung ho here and the moms and dads make it happen. You don't just accidentally end up at Clarendon. You choose to go -- even beg, get on a wait list, and hope. Correspondingly, the parents and kids want to be there, care about their education and actively participate. That drive is everywhere, and while there is a lot asked of you as a parent and family -- there is even more given in return. My daughter is a bit behind in her class, but I know at Clarendon, they will do their best to support her [and our family], and help her become the best student and person she can be.

We have been at this school for 5 years (Second Community), and are very happy with the education that our children are getting. The current principal is showing great leadership, and the school has been striving. Be prepared to be involved as a parent. The school depends on parent fundraising for the extra-curricular activities, but everyone should plan to pitch in, whether by chaperonning fieltrips, volunteering in the classroom, cleaning up campus, help with safety at the beginning or end of the school day. The pay-off is a rich social life for kids and parents, have friends you can count on, to help with carpooling, exchange babysitting, etc...

This school is the best. The teachers are friendly and all the programs are exciting. The campus has just been redone and it looks great. Since there are about 20-30 kids a class you get a lot of attention.

Clarendon (Second Community) has been a great school for my children. There's a large community of parents working to provide all sorts of enrichment programs. They have very strong Italian, PE, and music programs (2-3 times a week), weekly art with a great teacher and a separate art room, and all sorts of extra enrichment (Community Arts Day; the San Francisco Ballet program for 3rd graders). There are overnight field trips in grades 3-5. My children like school and have learned a lot from all their teachers and made good friends.

Our experience thus far with the JBBP program at Clarendon has been exceptional. Previously, we had our son enrolled at a well respected private school. With some anxiety, we made the change and do not regret it at all. The current principal, Mr. Barmore is truely exceptional exhibiting outstanding leadership skills. I just hope he is allowed and wishes to remain and continue leading this school. In addition we have been delighted with our son's teacher. She was terrific though I understand that not every teacher can be an all star. This was the case with the private school as well. But perhaps most importantly, the parent community has been wonderful to get to know and work with. The school could be improved further with even greater parental involvment both financially and with parental time, ingredients that are not always easy to provide.

My son gradualted from Clarendon 2 years ago. While I have heard that the new pricipal has made a very positive impact, I would say that my overall experinece with Clarendon (on the academic front) was particularly dissapointing. Out of 6 years, I would say that during only two of those years did my son have what I would consider 'good' teachers. So many people think that CLarendon is such a great school, however unless it has dramtically improved over the past twp years I would still say it is a crapshoot.

Our new Principal is excellent, we have a very strong body of teachers, and the Japanese language and culture is well integrated into the curriculum in the JBBP Program. I have been pleased with the rigorousness of the education to date although the children who are falling behind receive immediate attention. A few parents work very hard, many do not. Parent fundraising supports alot of extras including monthly field trips to places including Monterey Bay Aquarium and in the upper grades, overnight field trips - all tied into what they are learning in the classroom. We have been very happy with the school.

I have two children at Clarendon and have been there for 5 years so far. The principal turn over has been a bit disappointing but the current principal was worth the wait! Mr. Barmore is loved by all and is doing a super job with both staff and students. I have never seen higher morale throughout the school which, combined with the 'facelift' of the buildings, has made for a great school year. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Mr. Barmore stays at Clarendon at least until my kindergartner graduates!

I think, for the most part, that the teachers do respond appropriately to the needs of their students. Parents are certainly very involved in the classroom; there is usually a parent in my child's classroom helping out. Clarendon's library and librarian are wonderful. My son also enjoys his computer, music and art instruction.

My daughter just got assigned to Clarendon, and we are thrilled. The office staff is very nice, and so are the aftercare people. I have met some moms out front, who were very friendly types that you'd want to hang out with.

Our daughter is in the Fifth Grade and this has been a great school -- it may even get better with the planned makeover of the site, but pe prepared for construction for the next couple years.

The quality of academic program seems not big different from other school. The availability of music , art and other extracurricular activities is better than other schools. Level of parent invovment is high, very impressive.

This is a great school, especially if you get the right teachers. Like all public schools in SF, this one is underfunded. But parents are very involved and give a lot to the school in terms of both time and money. The Japanese program is particularly good, but the second community program is good too. There has been too much turnover with principals; at least 3 in last 6 years.

Very well organized parental involvement. Lots of consultants available to teach P.E., music, art, computers, foreign language, and library. Teachers are free to teach a creative academic program in their classroom.

'Peace of mind!'. That is what you feel when your child is at Clarendon. Clarendon has a very high parent particiption percentage ,and that is the key its success. Because childrens' success starts from the home. I originally applied for Clarendon because of it's Japanese language program. My mother is Japanese so I wanted my son to be exposed to the language and culture of Japan. I was happily surprised when I found out my son won the lotto (literally) and got in. Clarendon has been a total blessing.

We have a second-grader at Clarendon, and have been overall very happy with this school, particularly when we consider things we have heard about some of the other SF public schools. Our son's Kindergarten teacher was a dream come true - she could not have been better introduction to school for our son. His first grade teacher was not. Now his second grade teacher is very on-the-ball and in control. We feel he is doing very well, if not as challenged as he could be. There is a new, young principal, who is very involved and visible, and seems to be well liked by the teachers. One aspect of Clarendon that is unfortunate is that it is crowded to the point of distraction and may even compromise playground safety and some of the 'extra' programs such as music, art and after-school care.

We have two children at Clarendon Second Community and couldn't be happier. The teachers are dedicated, loving, experienced and beloved by the children. The extracurriculars are exceptional by public school standards. The parent leadership is organized and dedicated.

Clarendon is a magical and wonderful school that nurtures the total child. The teachers are kind, caring and intelligent. The environment teaches the children respect for eachother and the greater community. The extracurricular activities include music, art, Italian/Japanese, etc. The PE teacher is adored by the students (the outdoor playareas are segregated and designed by age group). This school is like having a private school for a public price. The parent involvement is tremendous which supplements the computer lab, library, etc. The best elementary school overall when you combine scores, extracurriculars, teacher quality and love and care.
