Both my children have thrived at McKinley. My oldest is now at Everett Middle School (McKinley's feeder school) and she and her McKinley alumni peers represented a significant portion of the honor roll students in the third quarter. It's quite a testament to the strong foundation they received at McKinley.

From his first day at McKinley Elementary several years ago, my son has thrived. With one exception (in an early grade), we have been very pleased with the teachers our son has had. And my spouse and I found an open and inclusive group of parents and caregivers at the school. The administration, teachers, PTA and students all contribute to making this a high-quality elementary school in the middle of San Francisco.

McKinley is an incredibly strong school right in the heart of San Francisco. While our API score is impressive (899) what speaks even more to McKinley's strength as a place for all children to learn is the staff. Starting with the school principal and going right on down through each of the grade-level teachers to the other learning professionals there is a strong focus on literacy (we have a PTA-sponsored literacy specialist doing early grade-level interventions with students), respect for learning and community, and a desire to help every student to the best of his/her ability. There is a very diverse student body (the most equal mix of African-American, Latino, Asian, and European caucasian I have seen at any San Francisco school) and a well-run after-school program. The parent community is very strong and fundraising makes sure we have an excellent arts and science program. I could not be happier with this school for my kids and our family.

Leaning into the new school year, McKinley is poised to start another fall term with the long standing, traditional welcome cook out. This is one of many culturally positive, inclusive events that are designed to build, tighten and strengthen an already strong community by building ways for new families to weave into the strong fabric of an excellent school.

Feels like a private school. Small and efficient. My son is now in 1st grade and we have absolutely adored our teachers so far. It seems everyone is happy with their teachers. My son loves going to school. He says he wishes there were more school days and misses it on the weekends. We feel very lucky.

The parent involvement at McKinley is second to none. As a new parent, I was so impressed at the level of parent involvement and organization of activities at McKinley. The fundraising is incredible and is a testament to the parent's interest and devotion to student learning. Given all the statewide budget cuts, McKinley remains a diamond in the ruff. I am proud to say my daughter attends McKinley and it is a direct result of the principal, the teachers, the staff, the parents and all of the wonderful children.

McKinley has been an excellent experience in so many ways. Strong teachers and a warm environment have taught my son to love going to school. Tight knit community has brought many friends into the lives of the whole family. And the AfterSchool program is exceptional - I am at work til after 5:30 but I know that my son is safe, happy and engaged with people who care about him. My other son will be starting at the school soon and can't wait!

We have been more than pleased with McKinley from the first moment we entered the building. We left private school because our son was diagnosed with learning issues and the public school system offered so much more aid and support than the private school was willing or able to give. We were so fortunate that we were assigned to McKinley!! McKinley has given us more that we hoped. The teachers and support staff are engaged and proactive and we feel we have a team. Our son is happy here.

I love McKinley Elementary because it is a great community! It's small for the public elementary schools and while far from perfect, there is a wonderful combination of teachers, parents, school staff, and community members that support EVERY child and make create a great environment for learning. Parents are involved in the school through class projects, tutoring, and many other volunteer opportunities. The teachers are experienced, patient, and compassionate and, most importantly, they love their work. My sons see a broad section of cultures, economic income levels, and learning levels. They learn everyday about the value of each person, by interaction, cooperation, and learning opportunities. It's one of the few schools that represents the rich mixture of the City population. My sons are challenged to learn new things every day and I am pleased and amazed to see their growth. McKinley has enrichment in arts, music, environmental science, and Spanish. We have a cozy school environment with the library as a central focus. McKinley has a great enrichment based After School program that provides great care and learning opportunities for every child, regardless of income level. Most importantly, my kids love their school too. They are safe. They learn. And they have fun. McKinley rocks!

I visited McKinley recently when visiting my daugher and her family inh San Franciso. Her daughter is in kindergarten at McKinley. My grandaughter has blossomed so much since entering kindergarten; even though she has been in pre-school for many years, I think her greatest personal growth and maturation has been this year. The school has a great layout for the children to easily navigate. McKinley immediately presents a very and warm and caring attitude. The principal has great energy and enthusiasm, as do the teachers I met. The students all seem friendy, happy and respectful of each other and the parents I met all seems to be very involved and supportive of McKinley

McKinley values and foster diversity in the truest sense: in thought, feeling, sensibility and creativity, as well as race, ethnicity, sexual preference, religiion or class. The staff, teachers, parents and community members all contribute and are valued in their own way according to their abilities and beliefs. This is a great model for students in the way the world can work best. Parents attend school meetings, teachers PTA meetings, everybody helps at clean up day and fundraisers. A working model of community for students to embrace. And rising test scores, too!

McKinley is a warm and inviting school, with a huge library right in the middle of the building. Diversity, hyper-active parent involvement, a fabulous principal (who knows all the kids names by heart!), a lovely neighborhood, an amazing after school program (ASEP rules!) and a school community that truly adores our little school are all reasons that McKinley thrives. Our first child is in 1st grade, and our second child just started Kindergarten here. We love several things about the school- its relatively small size, the dedicated and talented teachers and principal, the PTA which is run by a group of extremely devoted parents and increases in membership each year, and, last but not least, the wonderful diversity. Our daughter is going into 4th grade. McKinley has been an excellent school for her and for our family. Our new principal, Rosa Fong, has moved into the role so well, the staff, kids and parents have continued to thrive through the transition. The after-school program has improved steadily over the years, it has high-quality enrichment activities that my daughter loves: dancing, song-writing, etc. We have an excellent, really stable group of teachers, and the newer teachers have been a welcome addition. The teachers use technology well and appropriately to enhance learning, kids of all levels of skill and aptitude are engaged and excited about learning. It is a diverse, active, happy school.

My daughter is now in 1st grade at McKinley. It is hard to believe that two years ago this time we had never heard of the school and now it is the hub of our families activities. The community is very welcoming and accessible. It has the most well balance cultural and racial diversity of any of the thirteen SFUSD schools I toured. The architecture of the school revolves around a great room library with classrooms and hallways opening into it. This small active community of parents and volunteers built a new playground and planted herbs gardens in planter boxes outside all the classroom doors opver the summer. The academics are rigourous, but also adjusted to meet the needs of each child, with lots of differential learning going on. My daughter is learning to read as our her classmates, it is truly inspiring to watch them all grow.

We are entering our fourth year at McKinley. It is a small school with a very big heart -- The staff and teachers are very accessible, really care about the children and are very willing to work with families to help your child succeed. We love the diversity of the school (it is a microcosm of SF) and think the 'extras' - Spanish, music, and dance along with the McKinley traditions (sandcastle contest, UN DAY, Jr. Olympics, performances, etc.) add to the richness of the McKinley experience. Like all public schools it has challenges and constraints, but it is a school which deserves your attention. McKinley's motto is Our Students Shoot for the Stars -- each and every year, the school is making great improvements!

Salutations I know what a challenging process selecting a kindergarten is and want to say that our principal is highly regarded in the academic community. She really does know the name of each and every child and the school is an attractive, clean and cheerful facility. My daughter loves her teacher and their classroom pets and she enjoys doing her homework which has obviously been selected with careful regard. If playing in sunshine is important, McKinley is in one of the best micro-climates. There is an impressive level of parental involvement. My daughter is already processing and using her new Spanish skills and the music classes are a lot of fun. The early start time was a concern as we were often late for preschool with a 9am start. My daughter now jumps out of bed! Please remember numbers tell an incomplete story and best wishes to you.

Good community with active involvement and active PTA. Small classes and committed teachers. Usual struggles with resource limits lead to constant fund raising. This is a very good school with a truly outstanding principal. Parent involvement is high, teachers very good, the curriculum is solid, and the principal makes sure the curriculum is supplemented with art and music. The school is small, the safety and constructive discipline are top-notch. The only drawback is a pretty poor after school program which is safe, but not much more. The staff is poorly trained and many of them seem to have little interest in kids. If you don't need after school care - or only need a few hours a week - then McKinley is just as good, or better than, any public school in SF.

We are new Kindergarten parents at McKinley this year. So far, we can't be happier with the school. The principal, teachers, staff, after school program , PTA and parents...all seem to be hard working, eager and committed. We have a great feeling about McKinley and only want to see it grow and grow with it. Of course, we'd like to see an improvement in some of the school's physical conditions but we know that takes time and money. McKinley has the layout/bones, and the heart for what it takes to provide a great education, curriculum and environment for our children. The proof is on the walls...the imaginative and diverse artwork, the writing assignments documenting the children growth from the first day of school the last day of school etc. is simply amazing. The cosmetic is minor and with the energy I am seeing, It's only a matter of time.

We found this gem of a school when we did an extensive search of SFUSD schools. We were very impressed by the daily writing samples on the walls of every classroom, even kindergarten, even during Oct tour period. When we received our admission letter we got a personal call from the Principal welcoming us to school and inviting us to a get to know you gathering. Parent involvement is comfortable and welcoming. There are lots of enrichment programs, like Spanish, musical theater, drumming and chorus. My daughter wants you to know her kindergarten classroom is home to 3 newts, one tree frog, one snake and a worm colony. The After School Enrichment Program, located on site is literacy based. The kindergarten children get a nap which we like after a full day. They take field trips on Fridays, to local parks, museums, even ice skating. We feel like we won the lottery!

McKinley is a hidden jewel. It was our 7th choice but we feel like we hit the jackpot with this assignment. Enrollment is up, demand is up. We feel like we got in at the right time. It's a wonderful small environment where no child gets 'lost.' Bonnie Coffey-Smith is a remarkable principal - passionate, organized, competent, committed. My son is in kindergarten and he says his favorite thing about school is 'learning'! He adores his teacher, Mrs Mar, and enjoys a truly diverse classroom. We've been impressed by the parent involvement and energy -- the PTA is solid and growing in its active membership.

McKinley teachers and staff are incredible professionals -- they take an organized, educated approach to teaching and learning that ensures each child learns fundamental skills -- but leaves plenty of room for creativity and exploration. My 2nd grade son is excelling in mathematics, and has learned to appreciate sports, art, music and other cultures. But most impressive to me is that the school has a great and caring community of diverse families -- it reflects the best this city has to offer.

Our daughter started Kindergarten at Mckinley last Fall, and we've been surprised and pleased with the quality of the education she's getting. The class size is small, the teacher is assisted by a student teacher several days per week, and an additional tutor is available, so the kids never seem to lack for attention. The students are friendly, and we were surprised to find our daughter playing with the second-graders on her first day. Academically speaking, the kid is already reading on her own, and I occasionally make her read me a book at bedtime instead of the other way around. Her teacher is very up-to-date with her progress, and has adjusted her program to keep her challenged.

McKinley Elementary is the best kept secret in San Francisco. My son is in an advanced 3rd grade class. The staff is very caring and will bend over backwords for every student. You are treated like family the minute you walk in the door. This is a very small school compaired to other elementary schools in the city but has one very big heart. I found that out this year when a devistating tragity happened in our family. Every member of the staff was caring and very supportive. If I had to give this school a report card grade it would be a A+.

Teachers are open to meet and connect with parents and the principal is very involved. However, the inside of the school and facilities need some revamping. Also, the parking situation is not the best. Would prefer more regular parent information and request for parent invovlement at the site.

Our daughter is in kindergarten at McKinley, and we are very happy with the school. We chose the school because of the diversity of the students, the excellent growth in academic achievement, the small size of the school. The teachers are warm, challenging and firm with the students. Parents are welcome as volunteers, though the volunteer program is not well organized. It makes a big difference to our child that people throughout the school know her. The after school program is excellent. Our daughter is learning a lot from enrichment programs like Spanish classes (for K-1) and dance (for all grade levels). Finally, I would add that all kinds of families are welcomed and represented at McKinley.

McKinley is a very small school set in a beautiful location. It feels both welcoming and safe. The student population is representitive of our diverse city. Staff seems to be hard working, energetic and caring. They are going through difficult times but coming out ahead. Plus they have an excellent after school program.

I am a not a parent; rather, I'm a school volunteer from the neighborhood. I started in the 2000-2001 school year, expecting to put in 3 hours per week, but quickly found the time to be at McKinley 3 hours every morning. The student body is almost entirely low-income, with a wide range of ethnicities, including a plurality from Spanish-speaking families. McKinley students have a strong sense of school spirit, driven by a great teaching and front-office staff, with particularly good leadership from Principal Bonnie Coffey-Smith. The irony of McKinley is that it is in an upper-middle class neighborhood, with a very small school-age population; and most of the local kids attend expensive private schools! It is the outlying low-income parents who are putting out the effort to get their kids to this exceptional school (using San Francisco's open enrollment). I think the fact that so many of McKinley's student body are from other neighborhoods, choosing to be here, is what produces such a school with such good spirit.

Our daughter started kindergarten last month. We are very pleased with her experience. Bonnie Coffey-Smith is a very inspiring leader, a wonderful principal. The staff is very dedicated. We are very pleased with her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Fong. There is a stability with the staff. Much attention is paid to the whole child. While test scores are considered important and they have been rising, the child's self-esteem is taken very seriously. Because the school is small, Mrs. Coffey-Smith knows every single child. In fact, she called to welcome us to the McKinley community when we got the assignment! We are so pleased that we looked beyond the schools which are everyone's favorites to find the 'best kept secret in San Franciso'! Come join us.

My daughter has been attending McKinley since Kindergarten. It was only by luck that we got to experience this wonderful school. My daughter is the only child so I had no experience in enrolling a little one into school. There was a school right around the block from where we lived. But because I enrolled her late, she was assigned to go to McKinley. It has been a great ride since. There is so much dedication from the principle Bonnie Coffey-Smith, the administration staff and the teachers! The school has a family oriented atmosphere. Which is great for the kids, to have that safety and security not only at home but at school as well. I also enjoy the diversity in the school. It is great for the children to learn about the different cultures and ways of living. Not everyone is the same, but by learning and experiencing they will not fear the diverse cultures of the world. I can go on on the list does not stop on how great this school is, but you should experience it for yourself and your child. You will have no regrets!

Our family couldn't be happier or more satisfied with McKinley. Principal Bonnie Coffey Smith is truly an amazing, caring, organized, and innovative leader who is totally devoted to her kids. Our son has attended McKinley since kindergarten (he is now in fourth grade) and he has flourished. Each and every one of his teachers have been exemplary. The school is clean, bright, cheerful, safe and full of positivity. I would encourage anyone to explore McKinley as a school for their child. Sincerely, Patricia Hernandez

McKinley is a wonderful small school centrally located in the City. The teachers, principal and staff have created an engaging, well-structured, challenging, safe and caring environment for our kids. It's also a very inviting community for the entire family. The afterschool program provides a lot of extra activities, such as field trips to local museums and parks, the SPARK phys. ed. program, and art. Our children are thriving at McKinley.
