It is a diverse school and I wouldn't have it any other way. This is the only school which is rated as one of the top schools in SF with this type of diversity. Rooftop students are rich in experience. This school has incredible parent involvement, art, garden, sensory motor, etc.

Graduated from this school and had some of the best years of my life here. The school is small enough that kids form deep friendships that last beyond graduation. Teachers were nice and willing to help out. Lacks class options for the middle school section but provides a lot of support. The community is very involved and overall a good experience.

It has only been one week and I already love Rooftop! My daughter is a Kindergartener and has adjusted quickly while having fun and meeting new friends. She talks about her day and has developed a sense of routine in a short amount of time. The parents I have met are very welcoming and always have something fun to discuss! The principal has been to EVERY event I have attended including First Friday Coffees, Play Dates, and was VERY active the first day of school carefully tending to our little ones! I feel very fortunate to have a new family...THE ROOFTOP FAMILY!!!!

This school is an amazing school! Kids here get exposed to the opera, the symphony, jazz, dance, art.. there's even a garden for science. The teachers can be hit and miss like any other school, but there are so many programs that support the curriculum that each child gets a lot! The new principal is great and the the school has a welcoming attitude and teaches the kids to accept differences. We love it.

We feel very lucky to be a part of this unique school and fabulous community. This school is about the big picture, not just test scores. Children here come away with a well rounded education and are part of a richly diverse student body that represents the city beautifully.

While the elementary school is good, the middle school is just awful. By the time the kids get there, they're in tight cliques--not the school's fault, but the school's response to this is just awful. They try, but it's all lip service. Except for one or two good teachers, the middle school is very mediocre. There are no honors classes so some kids are either very bored or over stretched. It's easy for mediocre students to do well here if the teachers like them. If I had to do it again I'd definitely take my son out after elementary school.

Were art is not simply something we do, but is the lens through which our children learn how to think creatively and critically. A place where community, the joys and the struggles are embraced so our children thrive in body, mind and spirit!

It comes as no surprise that Rooftop is one of San Francisco s favorite schools. A caring community, a thriving art program, stellar academics, a diverse student body (more than any other public school in SF), smart teachers, centrally located and what s not to love about programs such as sensory motor and nature science in the garden. Rooftop is a wonderful environment for kids and parents.

Rooftop is a wonderful community of faculty and families. The diversity of the school is embraced and celebrated. The incredible teaching staff are gifted, creative and committed; the parents outstanding in their donatiion of time and skills. The incorporation of the arts is incredile, permeating instruction across the academic spectrum. In addition to the academics and arts, each month a different core social principal is observed - strengthening our overall social structure of our community. Definitely my favorite school!

Rooftop makes it a priority to have diversity in the student body and the staff. The teachers and all involved are dedicated and committed to providing a good education for the students as well as preparing students to be respected and respectful members of the community. There is much emphasis on good communication skills and dealing with difficult situations. The school offers a well rounded education with everything from gardening, to cultural activities, to art, to music and top notch scholastics as well.

Strong committed parent leadership, a compelling and caring principal, and a lot of strong teachers make this a fine choice. The physical campus leaves much to be desired, and extracurricular activities are limited but some choices are available after school for a small fee (chorus, spanish, electric guitar). The on site after school program is great.

This school has a wonderful school culture - I couldn't ask for anything more on that front. I appreciate the diversity of the student body, and how well it reflects SF in many ways. The integration of the arts into my children's school experience is also important to me. I am glad there is already such an established system for parents to get involved; I can do my part but I don't feel like I have to be a pioneer in any way. Before my child started school, I was worried that the needs of higher-achieving students might not get much attention given the pressures that public schools are under right now - I have been pleasantly surprised at the degree to which teachers and administrators have been looking out for the needs of my child. It feels great to have my child at such a thriving public school.

I have 3 children currently attending Rooftop Elementary and Middle school and I feel as if I've won the lottery. I can honestly say that my children are smart and well rounded because of the environment they are growing up in. This school is very nurturing but at the same time disciplined. They are taught that there is a time for fun and a time for studies, but they also know that the 2 sometimes go hand in hand for a great education. The parent involvement is about an 80% to high 90%. This may very well be why this school has such a good reputation. If it wasn't for the parent involvement, the PTA would not be able to have the funds to pay for the extra things the district will not provide for.

Hi My son goes to Kindergarten at Rooftop and we couldn't be happier. We actually were set on private school until we were accepted into Rooftop and I couldn't be happier. The teachers, principle and parents are truly involved in everything. They talk about 'Rooftop spirit' and it is much more than lip service -- it is really part of the culture. Do not believe what others say about it being all about Art. It is true that they have a strong art program but since my son has been there he has discovered his natural talents in Soccer and is a sports fanatic. This combined with an exceptional curriculum, a commitment toward making these school a 'green environment' and the exceptional arts program results in a well-rounded child. Do not be discouraged with the public school process - we were able to get into this school in the 3rd round.

I had two children who went through this school from K through 8th. The environment is nurturing and creative. The art integration is excellent and by middle school you can see the excellent impact on the children. The children are confident and willing to take risks when learning. I would say that the lower school is better than the middle school, there is more parent involvement, and it is a more supportive environment. I would say one of the big pluses was parent involvement. It was an eye opener to be in the class room on occasion. I understood the big picture better and the children really appreciated it. There is a strong family atmosphere.

I've been a parent at Rooftop for seven years and feel that it's an exceptional school. There have been many challenges during that time, most notably a 4-year principal turnover, but the current principal has been there 3 years and has shown great leadership and vision. She is a firm yet open administrator. She promotes a strong literacy program and academics, and also embraces art enrichment programs as fundamental for children's esteem-building. The biggest challenge I've seen has been at the middle school, but it has shown much improvement under her leadership. My child is experiencing an incredible 6th grade year. The Rooftop community is racially and economically diverse and the staff is dedicated to ensure every child's academic success. Parent involvement is high and the PTA does considerable fundraising for enrichment programs and basics that the district does not provide.

The Principal, Jane Bieringer, puts the kids' first. Her answer to anything asked of her is 'How will the kids benefit from this?'. She comes right out and says this, or you can tell it is the basis for her response. If the kids benefit, she listens. Her leadership is strong and clear. Visual Arts and Performing Arts are strong at Rooftop and totally integrated to support the curriculum and the kids' critical thinking. As of 2005, the very active parent volunteers raise over $225K for the PTA. The PTA funds the arts and art coordinators, science-in-the-garden and its fulltime teacher, a sensory motor program and its amazing fulltime teacher, a dynamic library and a very dynamic librarian. There is very low teacher turnover. The teachers my son has had (and have) care about him academically, personally and overtly. Parent/family volunteers are needed to keep this school great.

This is a popular school only because it includes middle school. The Principal has only been at the school for 3 years and seems most interested in ART. The children only spend 20 minutes a WEEK in the library but work on ART everyday. Principal is not focused on physical education or healthy eating but in the ARTS. If you want your child to be an artist, this is the school for you.

For a public school in San Francisco, Rooftop is obviously one of the best choices. There is a lot of parent involvement. Most of the teachers are great. The administrative staff has been disappointing. There is a constant turnover of asst principals. Also, though they claim to have zero tolerance for bullying, they do little to stop it when presented with evidence of it or reign in trouble makers.

Both of my children have attended Rooftop since kindergarten. One of my children has just graduated and will be entering high school in the Fall. My other child will be entering 6th grade. Overall, our experience at Rooftop has been positive. My younger daugher has struggled academically, and she has received tremendous support (emotional and academic) from the dedicated staff. We have made many cherished friendships through our involvement at Rooftop, with people from all walks of life. But I think anyone considering Rooftop has to be realistic. It is a public school, with overcrowded classes and precious few extra-curriculars. As a parent, you are expected to roll up your sleeves and open your pocketbook to compensate for what SFUSD isn't providing. The good news is, unlike a lot of public schools, there are a multitude of other Rooftop parents who are working right alongside you--

Plain and simple, Rooftop delivers in its hope to equip my child with good tools to make good choices in life. Through academics, parental involvement, creative arts and a committment to broadening our the children's worldview, my child is not just EXCELLING as a student, but THRIVING as a person.

The parent involvment here is superb. People are really involved. This is simply one of the better elementary schools in the SFUSD. If you can't afford private school, try to get your child into here. But it is tough, given the geographic requirements and the huge number of applicants.

A school is only as good as it's teachers and staff, and I've had very possitive experiences with both at Rooftop. The teachers care and are supportive of each child's social and educational needs. I love the diversity of social economic and rational mix. I love the 'community' feel that is fostered. I love the way Rooftop embraces each child's individuality. I'm starting to be concerned about the turn-over rate we've been experiencing the past three years. Although our current principal and vice-principal are both involved and supportive, and appear to be staying for the long-run. We've lost many great teachers in the past three years. Three of whom I know left for personal reasons unrelated (I think) to the teaching environment. I wish there were more extracurricular programs like sports and afterschool enrichment programs.

I toured this school in the latter part of '04 and found their emphasis on art and their diversity to be their biggest strengths. Also, the fact that they are k-8 doesn't hurt. They have a great library, a beautiful garden, happy kindergarden rooms, and a great principle. The school was formed by artists thirty years ago, who weren't happy with the public school offerings, what else do you need to know?

The K-4 grades are the best part of the school. K-4 Teachers have good attitudes and understanding of children. The 5-8 grades lack competant instructors. They are punitive and really burn the students out. They are totally unsympathetic to children with learning differences and parents have had to withdraw their children after 6th grade due to all the excessive stress.

My stats: Rooftop parent 11 years, 2 kids. My advice to survive Rooftop you must be able to be in the classroom and volunteer. Get to know your teacher. Avoid the principal, whoever is principal of the moment. Be pushy, if your child is gifted, extra pushy. Don't settle for quantity of work over quality. Mimiographed homework is the norm, it often is dull and well below your childs ability. Find outside stimulation for your child. If your child is needing the social network past 5th grade, then stay. For the more adventurous, leave after 5th grade and find a school with an honors program. They are listed at www.sfusd.edu, under GATE. I learned this the hard way, three watered-down-curriculum middle school years for my oldest. Luckily the high school my child is attending has made up for the deficiencies of Rooftop.

This school has had 4 principals in three years, and has been in disarray. The teaching is inconsistent. There is not a loving or supportive atmosphere in the upper grades. Their idea of strong academics is to assign alot of homework so that the students can learn from their parents at home. Highly overrated!

I have been a parent at Rofftop for 9 years and until 5 years ago I was very satisfied. When our long time principal left we entered a five year period of uneven leadership and an effort by the SFUSD to undermine the 'elite' reputation that Rooftop has always enjoyed. I hope that Rooftop can resolve the disappearing principal problem and come out stronger than ever, but my child has definitely suffered from the constant turnover.

I am so glad my 3rd grade son attends Rooftop Alternative. The community is an excellent place for the entire family to be apart of. I can't wait until my 4 year old enters next year for kindergarten. Thank you to the entire administration, parents and others who all make it 'happen' at Rooftop!
