I've worked at many institutions, but never before have I felt such a warm sense of community at SHC. It really it an extended family. Students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni all support each other and work together. The students are bright, hard-working kids that are driven and excited to learn about their world. The parent community is very involved, and alumni continue to give back. The balance of rigorous academics with cocurricular activities (not "extra"-curricular) nurture the whole student. I'm grateful to be a part of such a community and contribute to student success.

I would also like to add that although people say the area around the school is bad, I in particular don't agree. Just don't go down that area. But one thing I do love about this school is the different places we can go to after school. There's Japan Town that's only a 10 minute walk away, Little Saigon about 15 minutes down, and many other resturarants.

Both of my children attended SH, the eldest from Class 2006 and the younger one is graduating this year, Class 2010. I have nothing but good praises for the school. Teachers are great and supportive. They work with the students well and most of them, if not all, are approachable and willing to mentor the students. They have counselors who guide the students by making sure that they are on the right track. As the years progress, they have made so many improvements to the school--their facilities are being upgraded constantly and they have new teachers who are well qualified and dedicated to their responsibility. We are so happy to have picked this school for our kids.

SHCP is an excellent school! It has the perfect balance of academic rigor, co-curricular variety, athletics and parent involvement. The faculty and administration staff are high-caliber. Discipline has been firm, fair and consistent. Finally, the whole community is down-to-earth, not 'cliqueish' and very welcoming.

SHCP does one thing really well across the board: it lets students sink (sort of) or swim. That said, if you sink at SHCP, there are tons of great faculty members who will step in to help. That said, however, if a student does not put forth any effort to excel or to make face time with the faculty, not much can be expected. That same is true for the athletics. One will not survive playing for the Irish if continual effort is not applied, aside from scheduled practices. I loved SHCP and I did not hear of anyone in my class disliking their time on Ellis Street.

I currently attend SHCP as a sophomore. Though not involved in sports, I take pride in our great athletics program and support it. I am immersed in several other activities like student government and I find them entirely satisfying. Students feel like they belong here. Teachers are engaging and only want to see us succeed. The Scholar Program is good and does not necessarily offer anybody a boost. I am currently enrolled in it and I believe that a student's achievements depend on their own academic effort and merit. I think that SHCP is a good fit for anyone hoping for a friendly, safe, and nurturing educational environment. Definitely try to check it out. Go Irish!

Sacred Heart is a fantastic school. Good academics, excellent co-curriculars (both sports and non-athletic). caring, involved teachers, strong administration, well-behaved kids. The feeling of community at SHCP is second to none - it is truly something special. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a top-notch, high-quality high school education for their children - Catholic or otherwise. It is simply the best high school in all of San Francisco (and the Bay Area). Excellent !!!!

Great School. Kids have a friendly learning environment and seem to be well supported. Curriculum is College Prep but better paced than other preps. Highly recommend to anyone.

SH has stellar athletic programs and basic, middle-of-the road academics. Teacher quality varies; some oldline teachers maintain outdated, rigid methods that need to be brought into the 21st century. However, motivated kids can get a very good education here, and most everyone can find some extracurricular activity of interest from the huge selection. Arts aren't strong, but chorus offers opportunities for international travel. There's a great focus on community service, & the kind of football games & dances only larger schools can offer. Counselors & some teachers seem genuinely committed and responsive. They take pains to coach parents and kids on issues like substance abuse and different body images. However, if your child resists structure, questions material, or differs from the 'SH mold' (he/she has piercings, tattoos, odd-colored hair, dresses nonconformingly, is non-Christian, Goth, plump, or obviously gay), consider carefully before selecting SH.

Superb environment for a student to learn in. Places emphasis on learning as well as service and dedication to the community. The parent and alumni association is very strong as well, and provides a great support system for the students. The extracurricular activities offered are very broad and varied, and only adds to the growth of the student. Very highly recommended.

Sacred Heart Cathedral is not up to standards as a Private School. The teacher's expectations of the students is well below. The teachers don't have strict standards for the student to wrok by. If you're prestige enough to be a scholar, then you may be challenge in a high school level. Everyone gets on to the honor roll, not because of their ability but of how easy the academics are. Truthfully, not all teachers in SH have the requirements or the knowledge to teach their subjects. This year, the SAT average is 1038, an a below average score considering other private high schools. The college acceptances are stellar either. It's quite average. Generally, the academics aren't challenging to the average mind. They help the students expand intellectually. Personally, I would only go under extreme circumstances

Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep is an amazing school. They accept students with the potential to grow and nurture them through this tender and deciding stage in life. The teachers are great. There are many extracurricular activities that are offered. The athletic programs are top of the line. In addition, Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep has a very diverse student body. I highly recommend this school for any aspiring students looking to be a part of a beautifully diverse student body.

My daughter loves this school, she is a freshman and almost every day I hear her say 'I go to the best school!' They have a comprehensive sports program and academically they offer quite a lot for varying levels of ability.

I think this school is the best school anyone could ever go to. It has amazing teachers and the principal is fantastic.

Quality of teachers is steadily decreasing from year to year because most of the new teachers don't even stay for more than a year. There is a lack of leadership because the principal does absolutely nothing and then allows the dean to handle students in a careless and useless matter. Unless you're lucky enough to get into the scholar program, you really don't get much of a valuable education because the regular classes offered are far from challenging. Guidance from the college center is lacking as well. For all the money that you pay for a college prep school, you'd expect more than a couple handouts over the course of 4 years.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
