Trying to decide if a private school is right for your child? We didn't know either until we enrolled our daughter. While I appreciate all the students wearing uniforms along with teaching about God, our daughter has come along well so far since Kinder year who is now in the 3rd grade. I appreciate that it's a smaller school community with a strong parent network. Although each family has a required set of parent service hours that need to be met these hours are very easily attainable. There are many opportunities and different ways to meet those hours and we have actually gone over. I have talked to other parents at other private schools in San Francisco and their required parent service hours are considerably much more than what St. Monica requires which is nice to know.

We couldn't be more happier with how our 3rd grader is doing at St. Monica's. Ms. Keb steps it up a notch with teaching her class responsibility and accountability. We appreciate how academics are taught and like how there is a good balance of both academics and creative learning. There are music are art classes plus a number of after school activities that include guitar lessons, Academic Chess, Chinese classes, and sports involvement. We also appreciate Mrs. Harrington who heads the Extended Care program. Since she joined there have been some outstanding changes that involve more creative learning during the after school hours along with dedicated homework time for the students as well. The fees for Extended Care are extremely reasonable compared to learning about after school care programs at other schools.

You might pass up this gem in the Outer Richmond district if you think it is like a traditional parochial school. This school has an unbelievable warm mentor and innovative leader in our Principal, Mr. Sweeters. What drew us to this school is the intimate campus and the dedication to the core philosophy that weaves academic excellence, character, civic mind and personal accountability. If you have a child that would love to stretch their vocal cords - there is the honor's choir, if you have a child who loves to use his or her mind - we have chess, if you have a child who is creative and interested in exploring music, we have it all here. And, yes SPORTS! The faculty consists of years upon years of experience and the love each teacher has for her students AMAZING. Every school conference or issue your child might encounter is met with the loving desire to see each and every child succeed. What I have noticed in both my children is a passion for learning and unbelievable growth in comportment. If you are looking for a school that goes beyond your expectations and affordable then come to our next open house. You will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend St. Monica School for its quality of teaching, small size, excellent leadership, sports programs and parent community involvement. I have a child in the 8th grade who started here in kindergarten and also a 3rd grade child. I have noticed many improvements over the last nine years under the leadership of our principal Mr. Sweeters. He continually strives to make our school better from obtaining and renewing WAS accreditation to bringing technology into the classroom. The middle school school teachers are definitely challenging but they want to prepare every student for success in high school and beyond. My children have made good friends here and I feel that it is a close-knit community that takes care of each other.

My son is currently an 8th grader at Saint Monica School. We highly recommend this school and following are some of the reasons: 1) Academic standards are set high, but the teachers create opportunities to motivate the children so they can correct their occasional failures. My son is well prepared academically and now has a number of options to attend some of the best high schools in SF. 2) All the teachers (Mrs. Aguire, Mr. Devine, Mr. Mullen, Mr. Bussey) set high standards for good conduct and have a lot of heart. They paid close attention to my son's character development and kept us informed when there are any problems so improvements can be made. 3) Mr. Sweeters, our principal, is very nice to the children and the parents. He creates many opportunities for parents to get involved in the school. Mr. Sweeters works very hard for the welfare of our school. I have seen him standing in the middle of the street, in the rain, directing traffic to keep our children safe. 4) Saint Monica has a tutoring program where 7th & 8th graders can gain experience tutoring younger kids.

We are so glad to have found St. Monica School! Our daughter is in kindergarten and so far she is loving it! Not only are the teachers and staff excellent, the school also has a close and responsive parent network/club. We find that St. Monica School's Kindergarten is not only warm and nurturing, but also academically focused, with a curriculum that is engaging and fun. We love that arts and PE are incorporated into their daily routine and not compromised. In addition to regular school activities, my daughter is also learning Mandarin in their After-School Enrichment program. We love that the school is small and intimate and that the principal is easily accessible should we have any questions or comments. The tuition is also very reasonable compare to other private/parochial schools. Highly recommended!

Our daughter started kindergarten at St. Monica this past fall and it has been a great experience so far. It was a smooth transition from preschool and we are amazed on a daily basis by the things she is learning. It is proved to be a nurturing and structured environment at just the right balance. Instilling a sense of independence and accountability while simultaneously fostering an environment of respect, compassion and kindness. The kinder/8th grade buddy program has been one of our daughter's favorite programs so far. She also enjoys Chess Club that is offered in the after school program. We are very happy to be apart of the St. Monica community!

Great Language programs in the aftercare program, along with other aftercare programs such as chess, piano, guitar and sports. Wonderful caring teachers who are always available to chat about your child's progress (outside of the regular reviews) Great emphasis on sporting activities from basketball, volleyball, soccer, running, baseball etc Wonderful sense of community amongst the parents and the teachers and the principal is very communicative on all levels with regards progress and upgrades to the school academically and the after school programs. Delighted I have sent my two kids here (2nd and 1st grade) and I will be sending my third child in August. They are thriving there and I see progress on all levels with them on a daily basis.

Very happy to have our 2nd grader at St. Monica. Our child has been thriving since starting here -- academically and socially -- gaining confidence while being challenged and developing a real sense of community. The teachers we have had so far have been solid, and our child enjoys the art program and music classes. We also appreciate the convenience of the Extended Care program and that there are onsite after-school activities (sports, language, guitar, piano; we do some of these and will continue to do so). The Principal made a positive impression on us during our visits and we were relieved and delighted that it was not just a show. He's a leader and great communicator.

i went to St. Monicas in the 60's. It is great that its core hasen't changed. i was an Army Brat. My dad was stationed at Persido, we lived on base. I took 2 busses to get to school. I with my heart and soul loved this school, and still remember it fondly..

We have two children at St. Monica both with very different personalities. This school has been wonderful for both the kids. The class sizes along with the teachers are great in giving each child the attention they need. The older students really watch out and take care of the younger ones. Parent involment is great and everyone pulls together to create a wonderful and loving community. St. Monica was our last private school tour but our first choice. We are extremely glad to have our children attend this school.

Looking for an elementary school in San Francisco can be a daunting process. St. Monica School is a wonderfully small school with a caring community of both teachers and parents. Our kindergartener is thriving. Students are engaged, they know one another and are treated with respect. If you're looking for a supportive, small community, be sure to check out St. Monica. It's a wonderful school in SF's Richmond District.

My daughter is in Kindergarten at St. Monica's and we all have been so impressed with the everything the school offers for the students and parents. My daughter LOVES her 8th grade buddy as well as the independence in Kindergarten during Plan Do & Review time to select the area that she wants to work in. Additionally the after school offerings from extended care, piano, guitar lessons and Chinese classes are sure to make every kid happily entertained! The school also offers opportunities for the parents to engage with other parents and support the school via the Parent Club! We selected St. Monica's for the diversity and we look forward to the next 8 years.

St. Monica is a traditional, neighborhood school that has recently begun to evolve into an institution serving the modern requirements of both students and parents. The leadership and faculty of the school are both visionary and rigorous. The parents and parish community help emphasize the balance between academics, faith, athletics, and personal growth, making this experience more about the evolution of the entire child rather than just their test scores (which are top-notch, anyway!). Recent investments in technology, not only material, but in the planning of how to fully integrate these improvements into the kids' everyday learning, signal the school's ongoing commitment to keep the school one of the City's best. I have children in 3rd grade and K, and my wife and I couldn't be happier that they are at St. Monica. GO BULLDOGS.

My son is in kindergarten at St. Monica. From the moment we toured the school last year we knew it was the right place for us. The kinder teacher is wonderful and is really great at connecting with the kids to inspire a love of learning. My son attends the extended care program in the afternoon and loves it! He actually asked me to wait until the very last minute to pick him up so that he can stay as long as possible. He's formed so many wonderful relationships with kids in every grade.

My son is in his second year at St. Monica and I can't say enough good things. We originally were touring Catholic Schools as a backup to SFUSD. When we toured St. Monica, it became our frontrunner for both Catholic and public schools. It's a very strong academic school while at the same time, allowing creativity and providing a nurturing environment. The principal, staff and parent community have great school pride and it shows in the classrooms and social events.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
