The new principal is only interested with getting more funding for the school by encouraging teachers to pass failing students to the next grade. The whole school is selective in terms racial make up of the student body. According to the school's accountability report, whites always score at least 25% than all the other minorities. My child of a different racial background is always labeled as the liar when involved in a dispute with a white student and sent to principal's office. The teachers are uncaring. The only caring staff are the lunch room ladies and the yard monitor ladies. I have decided to pull my child out of this school.
This used to be a great school prior to the budget cuts and the teacher pink slips and class size increases. I expect Alice Shaw's test scores will fall especially in the lower grades. The class sizes jumped from 20 to 33 students and even with volunteering in the classroom I personally felt many children were being left behind. The budget crisis has impacted Orcutt hard IMO. I have transferred out due to the lack of teaching and more focus on crowd control in the classroom.
We have the best teachers/principal ever! I always feel like my child is getting the best education possible. We have extensive parent involvement!
Excellent school. Teachers are great, very dedicated. All the staff really loves the kids and they are a great team, providing safety, and a great learning enviroment. My son really enjoys school.
I attribute a lot of my childrens success in school to the support and dedication of the Alice Shaw staff. Even though I have a bus stop right across the street from my house that would take my kids to another school I have chosen continue to drive to Alice Shaw because of the wonderful caring staff. My daughter is getting ready to graduate high school and attend college and I believe the education and support she received at Alice Shaw has helped her to see her goals and achieve them. I can see that my boys are getting that same education and support.
At Alice Shaw School we all care about our students.
The principal is amazing, as are the teacher's! the ground's and supervised play ground's are a safe wonderful place for the children and they love it!
Our principal, Janet Bertoldi truly cares about the students. All the students! When she talks to the kids or talks about the kids you can just see in her face that they are important to her. The teachers go the extra mile to get the kids the help and support they need. Alice Shaw is a great home away from home for our son.
Alice Shaw has tremendous staff and teachers..who are giving our students more of there concentrated time and off hours as well as private funds to three times as many students as other earlier years because of the drastic budget cuts to education and the arts(32 students per class as opposed to 15-20 last year)
It's a great school where the parents really work together to make it fun for everyone. There is huge parent involvement, and the parents seem to be concerned about ALL the kids, not just their own. My kids are very lucky to attend Alice Shaw.
