Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I have heard about the rumblings at Dixie. I am happy for the parents and children who are pleased with the school. I also acknowledge that one's experience can be vastly different from another's. To deny that even just one child could be miserable is doing a disservice to all children. The scores have been solid for this school. The diversity and wealth contribute greatly to that. I am aware that some dynamic teachers/administrators have started their own school. They feel in sharp contrast to some of the stodgy old-fashioned ways of this Principal. Again, it works wonderfully for some and it is detrimental to others. A dynamic Principal works with both and doesn't sweep problems under the rug. The district has received complainst about some teachers at Dixie through the years. Strict is different from mean. The school has some mean teachers that should change their ways or get out of teaching young, impressionable children. Again, happy for those who's experience is different. My guess would be you have the good teachers. The ones who get stuck with one of the infamous bad teachers - please don't judge their cry for change.

To any and all who are interested in attending Dixie, please come to our school and listen to the laughter, watch children on the yard and in the classrooms, and observe how engaged they are in learning. It's a wonderful school with a few very vitriolic parents who, in spite of hating the school, remain, forever trying to pressure teachers and and other parents to join their ranks. It's a sad state of affairs for those of us who love our school. Trust me when I say that it is a VERY small but very LOUD minority. The vast majority of us love our school, our administrators, and our teachers.

I find it interesting that people would negate the positive reviews of parents and teachers because it is of a different experience than their own. Based on my humble opinion and observations as a parent and teacher of a handful of years at Dixie, it's a great school. I have also noticed a tiny percentage of parents who cry foul because their request is denied or something doesn't go their way. Not every school is a great fit for every child and family. Luckily, there many different school choices for your children to attend in Los Angeles. I am assuming the parent/reviewer of every teacher at Dixie, had children in all those teachers' classes. Otherwise, it is analogous to having people you don't know review you as a parent based on gossip.

Those of you writing good reviews of this school either haven't been there long enough to know the truth, or the principal is doing a good job of hiding the truth and you will eventually find out. Talk to the parents who've been through it. We are in middle school now and it's a breath of fresh air. And to the teacher saying the school is great? Are you sure it's not the principal making it up? We were friends with one of the teachers at Dixie whose child was also attending and she told some horror stories but felt she couldn't tell the principal. As of last year 4th grade is the worst--there are no good 4th grade teachers, 5th has 2 wonderful and one awful, 3rd--one excellent and the rest average to bad, 2nd--one excellent, two average and the rest bad, 1st is all good, and kinder is 50/50). This is not a great school. It is mediocre at best. If it had good leadership as it used to before this principal then I might think differently but great...it's not. Just ask the kids.

Hit or miss school. Some aspects are great, some are not. So much depends on which teacher you get. A few are superb rock star teachers. Some need to look in the mirror and figure out what their goals are as a teacher. Some seem bitter and need to retire from working with young children, others appear a little lazy. There is A LOT of fundraising. Many programs are totally supported by the parents, like computers and P.E. The tech lessons are weak, but there are at least new computers. Other tech programs are much more advanced at other schools. But my experience comes from private schools. This is our first public experience.

This school is high scores and advanced students oriented. If you child is gifted, you will be happy and well respected. If your child is average or below, go find some other place. Most of the teachers expect all the kids to perform at the same advanced level and have very little to zero patience for the kids who don't. Obviously this attitude comes from the leadership. Principal and assistant principal couldn't be more rude, heartless, careless and disrespectful. Not students/parents oriented. A perfect couple. However, if high scores what you looking for - this is your place.

Just wanted to throw out another point of view... I am currently a parent of a 4th grader at Dixie, and we are very pleased with our child's teacher. She seems dedicated, passionate and, according to my child, she offers praise, encouragement and, when necessary, criticism. I can only imagine how challenging it is to keep 30+ nine/ten year olds on course, and my child is the first to admit that they are a rambunctious bunch. In my opinion, if the kids are acting up, the teacher has the right to call them out. I figure, if I wouldn't tolerate certain behavior at home, I don't expect (or want) the teacher to indulge it. Empathy is great, but there's also a ship to steer, and so far, I feel my child's 4th grade teacher at Dixie has been an excellent captain. As for the principal, over our 5 years at Dixie, I've seen her show consistent support to students and parents alike. I honestly couldn't be happier with the leadership at this school.

As a parent who moved away from this school because of teachers who yelled and a principal who was abusive, I am appalled that a teacher would bash a parent just for saying their opinion. As a teacher it's great for you that you feel supported for anything that is "thrown" at you but there are little kids being yelled at and frightened by teachers. The principal is in no way student centered. You sound like you are threatening the parent for speaking her mind. This principal is the worst and many of the teachers are gossipy and rude. I am so thankful my kids now go to a beautiful school in Westlake were my kids are thriving and love school. It wasn't the case when they went here.

As a teacher, I am appalled at parents who bash teachers when they don't get their way. Dixie is not my first school, and I am proud to say that it is where I intend to stay. Our principal is warm, child centered, and yes, she supports her teachers in whom she has well founded confidence. With her support and confidence, teachers feel supported and are more equipped to deal with all that LAUSD throws at them. BTW: Everyone knows who the nightmare parents are, too. You are not doing your child any favors by bullying, gossiping, and spreading hostile rumors about teachers. You will likely raise a child who will bully, gossip, and value hostility as socially acceptable behavior.

My son has attended since kindergarten. He's going into 3rd grade and we couldn't be happier with dixie. The teachers and administration care so much about the kids. Along with regular core curriculum they have science, computers, art and drama. Every child has an enriching experience. The API scores improve every year. This school is a winner!

Dixie Canyon is an exemplary school. The teachers are dedicated, the parents are active and the kids are excited to be there. There is always something to look forward to, spirit days, student of the month assemblies, and movie nights. The art program at Dixie is great. Drama Sue and Ms Barbro challenge the kids artistically and keep them engaged. The tech and science centers are equally great. My child loves the tech center with Mr Merkelson. She is always excited to report what new program she's learned to use. We love Dixie and are so happy to be a part of this amazing community.

Wonderful school. Very involved faculty. Both the parents and teachers do everything they can to provide the kids with everything they need: Drama, Computer Lab, Science Lab, Art, etc. Test scores have gone up every year we've been there. Our older son has been very happy there, and our youngest is going to start kindergarten next year.

So proud of the administration and faculty for taking the initiative to do the "right" things for this school and it's students. And awfully proud of the kids. The principal had a vision when first coming to Dixie and has put forth a valiant effort to bring the school to where it is today. Our child had a fantastic experience at Dixie which afforded her the opportunity to be a stellar student in middle school. Thanks Dixie and Ms. Moche for the excellent job you're doing! Gandhi said to "be the change you wish to see in the world" and you're bringing light to the world one child at a time.

Dixie is a great neighborhood school - and has improved in many ways since our son started in kindergarten - the 9 score is well earned. Our son is in his last year and is thriving and becoming more independent and has high scores entering middle school. Not to use this forum to be too back and forth amongst parents, but having a full time job is not an "excuse" to not be on campus, but a harsh reality for many parents today. I am sure they would all rather be dropping off their children, walking them to the classroom, and interracting as much as possible with teachers and administrators. Luckily, Dixie is a solid, safe and nurturing environment so if you are amongst those who has to clock in before the bell rings, my experience is your child can still thrive at Dixie. Just because a parent has to work, doesn't mean they are not involved in homework, mentoring, loving and nurturing thier children at home after 6pm.

My two girls just finished a total of 12 years at Dixie and we're very proud they are Dixie graduates. In the past, they have donated a heartfelt donations to the victims of the Haiti and Japan earthquakes. They have conducted food drives and toy drives annually and have a lemonade stand daily to promote the fund for pancreatic cancer research. Last year, we sponsored a table for mission's Thanksgiving dinner and volunteered and worked the mission's toy giveaway as well. About 4 years ago, Kids planted about 30 trees in the yard and brought cans and bottles to Tuesday recycling program every week. This school is not only getting high API but educating children about how important it is to be part of the change that they want to see in the future and taking pride in doing work as a big team. The PTA is very active and have a great supporting community. We're sad to leave but highly recommend this school and wish the best for them. It was a great experience being a Dixie parent. Thank you Dixie for having us for 12 years!!

I agree that the Principal is more of a Risk Management Legal Beagle than an educator. However, Dixie Canyon is more than one person. It is a fantastic school with great teachers. I strongly disagree with the Parent that makes excuses why she or he is not involved in the School. Teachers teach. Parents should Parent. And Parenting is about encouragement, involvement, knowing what your child is learning, knowing that they are not being bullied. I couldn't imagine delegating that to others. It is so much fun being around the kids, because they are straight talkers. And it makes a difference for your Child to know their Parent cares enough to visit the classroom, volunteer, or Room Parent. It demonstrates to them that they value education.

This is our 5th year at Dixie Canyon, now a charter, and our son is thriving and adores his school. Our son won't let us even contemplate the thought of changing. With the exception of an occasional new teacher, the teachers at Dixie are experienced and know their stuff. The enrichment programs are exceptional - visual arts, drama, computer and science labe. This year, the PTA is investing in a PE coach at lunch and recess. The principal has improved Dixie's overall scores and runs the school well. In reading the recent reviews, I was hurt by the parent who accused parents of not being on campus. First of all, the indication of a child's success is their increased independence and success at school without being tied to their parents hemstrings. And many parents today work full time and are not able to be on campus as much as they would like. The upper grade teachers do not appreciate parents in the classroom all the time. One thing I love about DIxie, is that when I have to drop my son off and run to work every day, I am confident he is safe and in the best place possible, with caring teachers and staff and the parents who can be on campus, are generally very kind too.

It sounds like the previous review had more complaints about LAUSD and society than the school itself. We have been at Dixie for four years and have had a terrific experience. I am involved, have a relationship with our hard-working principal (whom I DON'T find to be narcissistic at all) and love our community. Our daughter's teacher is firm, tough, warm, creative, fun and extremely interactive. She set up a class website, which we all can participate in, the first week of school. Yes, as parents we are our children's most important advocates but I feel confident that if I couldn't be there my child would be well cared for. We have a very strong, active PTA that works hard to compensate for all the LAUSD cutbacks. Because of this we have Science, Computer, Art, Drama and PE programs. I don't observe much in the way of politics. If anything we have made some terrific friends here because we are all working together for the betterment of our kids. As far as the permits go, why shouldn't schools allow people in if there's room? We find that permit families are hard-working. Why? Because they're grateful to be at such a great school. We love Dixie Canyon!

If you want your children to be apart of a wonderful learning environment chock full of diverse experiences, this is the place for you and your family. Dixie Canyon is a gem of a school, complete with a dynamic PTA that works extremely hard to make it so. I was one of those parents from the previous review who worked an enormous amount of volunteer hours to help the auction become a success. It is the dedication of that group of parents, teachers and staff that make this school ROCK ! My child is adequately prepared for the journey ahead because of the education received here. If you can muster the courage to make your child's education a priority, then by all means come in. If you want to gripe about what's not right without lifting a finger to make it better, move on. We are a California Distinguished School for a reason and that is providing a great learning environment for kids.

Ten years ago my son started kindergarten at Dixie Canyon. I went to the PTA's first silent auction meeting and found only 3 other overworked moms with a few hundred dollars in the bank. Undaunted, we went on to hold our event in a local rented room, and raised a few thousand more. It was a small start, but the PTA has never looked back. Last week, dozens of hardworking moms (and dads!) put together a special evening at CBS Studios that was nearly sold out, and certain to have made tens of thousands of dollars. All this from parent's fierce desire to supplement their children's schooling with a drama, art, science and computer program. Say what you want about the shortcomings of the LAUSD system you can't beat a school where the parents are as dedicated as this!

The principal of Dixie Canyon told me that the substitute teacher (who was temporarily teaching my son's kindergarten class), left the school because of my son's behavioral problems. My son did have ADHD, but I thought that this was a completely inappropriate and unprofessional comment for the principal to tell me. Regardless, my son finished kindergarten there (with much difficulty). I don't feel like the teachers were as professional or as helpful as they could have been. My son goes to Kester Ave Elementary now, and we are much happier there.

Dixie is our home school and I had heard good things about it so we enrolled for Kindergarten figuring if it wasn't good we could look elsewhere the next year. Kindergarten was fantastic! My daughter came out of kindergarten reading, doing math and with a thirst for more learning. I love the school and my daughter does too. She learned so much in Kindergarten! She is in 1st grade now and we are still so happy at Dixie. My youngest daughter starts next year in Kindergarten and she is so excited. The school has fantastic teachers and staff. The PTA has worked hard to make sure we keep our fantastic Art teacher and Drama teacher. We are so lucky to have them and their enthusiasm at our school. We take advantage of the after school art and drama classes as well, even though I feel she gets enough during the regular school week she loves to take after school classes with these two incredible teachers. Parents are very involved at the school as well. I feel like my child is safe when she is at school and I know that she is happy to be there. I am happy we choose to go to our local school and I am looking forward to seeing how much she learns this year!

I have 2 students in this school and my experience has been more so closer to January 13ths post. Both teachers have bad attitudes and the only communication I have had with eitehr teacher has been rude as well as unproductive. 1 child will move on to middle school next year and I will be removing my other student from this school. I wish these teachers the best and hope they have an enlightened experience, there are too many young people coming out of college that would love to have their jobs that will put their all into teaching our children.

This school had good API scores. Not great, but good. According to that, i would expect a better curriculum and better teachers. My son started kindergarten in the beginning of this year, and so far everything he has learned he learned either at home or at his grandmother's preschool. What they are doing there from 8 am to 2:40 pm i have no idea. Not learning anything, that's for sure. His teacher is horrible. She is a sad , deeply unhappy person, not talking to parents, not communicating, and at times just being plain rude. She obviously has some personal problems she is going through, but why it should be my son's problem as well, i have no idea. I tried to transfer my son, but the principal would not budge. If she (the principal) is allowing people like that to be on stuff and teach children, this school is not good. In any way. I pray for a nicer, more undertending human being as a teacher for my son next year. If not, i am pulling him out. I hope the rest of you had better luck

Dixie Canyon is the jewel of the valley for LAUSD! It's a relatively small school, with VERY INVOLVED parents, teachers and administrators. The PTA is spectacular and has moved mountains to make sure that the kids have music, art, a computer lab, a science lab and regular school beautification projects. The kids get a great education because the parents and teachers work together! They've managed to build a "community" around our kids in a city as gargantuan as L.A.

Love the PTA and events that the school has for the children. Drama Sue and the Art & Computer teachers make the school a great place for my girl to start her first year. It is sad that the parents have to help LAUSD with buying supplies, I would like to know where the money is going if not to the students supplies at least. It would be nice if the teachers had some real help in the classrooms. The office staff could use some excitement in their attitudes. If it were not for the extras Dixie offers I would not have been too happy.

Dixie Canyon allows far too many students to attend who do not live within the Dixie Canyon Elementary district. The last two years our child attended Dixie her classroom was OVERCROWDED with one teacher and no teacher s aide. The Dixie staff needs to conduct an audit at the beginning of the year to confirm CURRENT parent addresses and also limit the amount of vouchers given out. Why did I pay $300k over what we should have for our home because it is in the Dixie district if students who live 10 miles away can attend?

I put my daughter there for the school is a walking distance from my living. after only few months I discovered how blessed i am to be so close to this school. My daughter started reading after only few months in Kinder Garten, She knew a lot of big words, knows how to spell, she knew a lot of maths... I say thank you to Dixie Canyon and Special Thanks to Mr. Chris Masserdjian who played the biggest role in making my daughter a good reader. The school is so strict about the dress codes and the children behaviors.. It feels like your child is in a private school. I do not remember one day my daughter came back with bad words or any bad behavior. I know that they fired a kinder garten student for being bad and I loved that in them

There is a nice new principal now that has a lot of energy but not a lot of principal experience and she has hired a 'helper' administrator to do a lot of the hard work that she is learning to do like LEP testing and payroll. Dixie will return to greatness soon after this break-in period. School is recommended.

Interesting to me why only positive reviews are getting posted. Hmmmm. And how about spell-checking? Okay...Dixie has some outstanding teachers, but the campus is filthy, staff is uninviting if not downright rude. The playground is nuts...my daughter is out there with over 200 kids and little to no equipment. Enrichment is good; but as a parent you should know you have to work HARD to keep the school working for your kids. If you don't have a lot of time to devote to being there physically, I would not recommend this school.

The school is in a major renaissance right now. The PTA meetings are standing room only. The new parents have come in and really relieved the veteran parents. We are being lead in a great direction and the kids are happy. API scores are up 24 more points this year. Just Brilliant!

Last year was our first year at Dixie. We didn't have the best experience to start but the principal was instrumental in getting our teacher replaced and the year turned out wonderful. The teacher who we initially had is not a good fit for Dixie and it is a shame that good teachers had to be layed off and this teacher is still there.

My daughter will start second grade this fall. She absolutely loves school and I attribute that to her two wonderful, caring teachers. The LAUSD curriculum is not perfect but nor is it perfect at expensive private schools. I feel confident that she will learn what she needs to in elementary school at Dixie. The PTA does a great job of adding hands-on experiences (gardening for eg). We had a good experience with the principal who had an open door policy and always returned phone calls promptly. In public you do need to make more of an effort as a parent to stay on top of what is going on in the classroom but this doesn't mean volunteering for every fundraiser. Just take the time to get to know your child's teacher and a few other children and their parents and your child's experience will improve dramatically. I recommend Dixie without hesitation.

Dixie Canyon's API went down for the 2008-2009 school year. A few points is nothing but a school should not be regarded by it's a API score. API scores only mean that the teachers are teaching for the test. If your child is lucky enough to have the few good teachers at Dixie there is no reason a child would not do well. One year with a less than desirable teacher and your child suffers. I am a very involved parent and I think people need to listen to the negative post as well as the positive. They are both true. There is something wrong at Dixie but if parents continue to just post and not do something about their concerns, nothing will change.

How can this school have hit an all time low as mentioned below - when the test scores keep getting better! The negative reviews below are not describing the Dixie Canyon that I know. My child has been at Dixie for 4 years and we are very impressed with the teachers and quality of education. Mrs. Dichter was a very hands on principal who actually was rarely in her office - but running around making sure that her school was operating to the high standards she demanded. The parents below must not have been on campus much! One step on campus or one glance at the test scores will show the true Dixie which is one that most parents are proud to be part of.

This school has changed over the past few years, and for the worse. They got the principal Mrs. Dickter that just sat in her office and did not a lot else but count the minutes until she retired. Now she retired, but the damage of years of leadership apathy can not easily be undone, even by the selection of a young and energetic new principal. I pray for the best, but prepare for the worst.

The curriculum at this school is very weak. My daughter's class this past year (third grade) had virtually no writing instruction, yet students were graded in writing. The reading program was weak (the teacher reading aloud from a basal reader, round robin reading, and lots of worksheets, little actual reading done by kids) and the math programs fails completely to teach the underlying concepts. Don't even dream of real science and social students content! Of course, the curriculum is mandated by LAUSD but better schools find ways to compensate and to enrich the curriculum. Dixie does not. As a parent of two Dixie students, a teacher at another school, and a tutor to another Dixie student I can tell you that the education provided here is inadequate. Send your child elsewhere.

When my first child attended Dixie several years ago, we were fairly happy with it. She had a few good teachers, the basics were fairly well covered. We were able to fill in the gaps in her education with outside classes and activities. However, my third child is now attending Dixie and we have become progressively more frustrated as they years, and the frequently changing principals have progressed. For the sake of all of the children who must attend this school, including my own, I can only hope that things will be better with the new principal than they were under Mrs. Dichter when they hit and all-time low!

Dixie Canyon is a fine school if your child is completely 'average'. In many years of working with children, I have learned that most children will learn even in schools that are not particularly wonderful. It is the kids who are not 'typical' who do not do well in unexceptional environments. Middle-of-the road kids will make do. However, if your child is exceptionally bright or struggles, Dixie Canyon is not going to take your child's needs seriously. The PTA ensure that things like art and PE are still offered, but the terrible LAUSD curriculum is still used, of course, and unlike at better schools, little is done by the staff to compensate for this poor mandated curriculum to truly teach the kids well. This is school that does the bare minimum, with the exception of the parent groups who try to provide the extras as much as they can.

If your child has had a positive experience at Dixie Canyon, count your blessings, but do not be hostile towards families who are less fortunate. My son has mild special needs and the way he and our family have been treated while trying to get his needs met has been excruciating for our family. It is incredibly painful to watch your child struggle and suffer through each school day, feeling as though he is not valued by his teacher or other adults at school. My son came home regularly crying and would sit on my lap telling me 'They don't want me there! I want to go to a different school!' We are trying to find a way to get him out of Dixie and pay for private school

My family has also suffered at Dixie. My two children have struggled academically at Dixie and they, and I, have felt that they were allowed to struggle without support or concern from Dixie staff. When I have asked for help I have been ignored. Perhaps, as previous posters suggested, my children were not educated properly because I was not involved enough in the PTA. I believe that in America, my children should not suffer because I chose to take on the challenge of raising three children as a single parent. ALL children should be cared for and educated, even if their mother has to put most of her time and money into extra therapies and care for three special needs kids instead of into the PTA fundraisers. To suggest otherwise feels classist and unreasonable. I do what I can, but I feel less inclined to volunteer when my kids are mistreated.

We have not had positive experiences with Dixie Canyon. Although the parent groups help provide some enrichments and 'extras' not provided in most LAUSD schools, they cannot address the underlying problems at Dixie, such as classes where students are routinely taught by substitutes (my daughter's class). My child needed to be homeschooled on evenings and weekends while attending Dixie because she didn't learn. Although some parents believe that only positive experiences should be shared on this site, I wish that the many parents who have recently shared their bad experiences had posted BEFORE I chose to enroll my child in this terrible school! Once we began at Dixie and I was volunteering, I encountered a strong undercurrent of frustrated families who were ignored by administration or worse, treated with terrible hostility for trying to get their child's needs met. It's incredibly sad, but some families are respected while others are ignored.

I have been at Dixie for 9 years now with 2 children and have loved every minute of it. I have alwasy been heavily involved with the school through the classrooms and the PTA. My children have had the best teachers - better than any private school. The Prinicipal and VP have always had an open door policy and were willing to work with me on any issues I had. It is a wonderful gem, not overcrowded like some of the other nearby schools. Seems to me the negative reviews listed below are from people who think they are involved but are not. There are a great deal of parents at all schools who want all these things done and changed but are unwilling to help in any way. At Dixie there is a great parent movement but like all schools, they need more help to achieve their goals.

Our daughter will be starting 3rd grade in September and we couldn't be happier with Dixie. The teachers and administrators have shown compassion and interest in giving the best possible learning experiences to the children in their charge. Like all schools, Dixie needs help in providing programs and support and the parents at Dixie have stepped up to the challenge! The old saying, 'you get out what you put in,' applies in this case; new programs are being developed as a direct result of parent/teacher participation. The spirit of involvement has become contagious and many different forces are coming together to contribute to the educational and artistic goals of our wonderful school. (Usually, any problems that have arisen, have been due to bad LAUSD district policies.) My family feels lucky and proud to be involved at such a great school with genuine, caring, hardworking and involved people. Go Dixie!

Many parents at Dixie Canyon are surprised and dismayed at the series of subjective, highly negative reviews previously posted. Using the Great schools forum in this way is detrimental to all. I would urge the parents who wrote these reviews to approach the principal or PTA membership at Dixie to discuss their expieriences rather than post them in this manner. Our experience at Dixie has been nothing but positive and our son loves this school and is going into first grade. We are very excited and proud to be at Dixie and are confident he is receiving the best public education possible. There are challenges at all public schools but at Dixie there is a great community and inclusive spirit and we share the belief that all our students must receive the very best education possible. Perhaps these parents weren't as involved as they should have been.

My son is starting his 4th year at Dixe and we could not be happier with the school. The principal (Mrs Dichter) was very involved with all aspects of the school - knowing every child by name and attending all the performances and after school events. We have only experienced dedicated and caring teachers and administrators who go out of their way to ensure the kids receive the best education possible. The parents are energized and are working together to make our school even better. We are proud to be Dixie parents!

We, too, had a miserable experience with this school. I see from the reviews that our experience was not unique. When I would drop off and pick up my child, the parking lots and sidewalks were full of parents telling horror stories and complaining about their issues at Dixie. We did, however, have a great experience with the STAR program. CJ, the manager of the program, is terrific! It is too bad that this great afterschool program isn't associated with a better school!

It seems that this school has deteriorated a lot. Parents from several years back seem to have had positive experiences while many recent parents have been unhappy. Given my experiences with Mrs. Dichter, the principal at Dixie for the past couple of years, and Mrs. Dillon, the assistant principal, this is not surprising. Both of the 'professionals' demonstrated a completely lack of interest in the welfare of children and were in fact, hostile and malicious. Hopefully the new principal will turn things around.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with most of the recent posts. We have not had a good experience with this school. It seems like a lot of people are happy while their child is in kindergarten but things deteriorate as the children get beyond their first year or two. My children have come to hate school since they have attended Dixie, and have needed to be basically homeschooled because the education is so poor there. We will either send them to a private or charter school, or we will move into a neighborhood where they can attend a decent school. I tell all of my friends and neighbors to be very careful if they are considering sending their children to Dixie.

Dixie is the worst school I have ever encountered after a decade of working with schools across four states both in a professional capacity and as a parent. I never encountered a school with such a hostile, irrational, unsupportive administration, or a school where students needs were disregarded as much as they are at Dixie Canyon. I was horrified that children are subjected to a place like this. I can only hope that the strong parent groups and the new principal can turn the place around. I'm not holding my breath, however, and am pulling my children out.

My son transferred to Dixie in second grade. He had been doing very well in his previous school and his academic performance dropped off dramatically during his time at Dixie. There was a lot of chaos and my son's class had frequent substitutes. As a result, the instruction was very inconsistent and we had to compensate with outside tutoring. With outside support to fill in the gaps, he is now up to speed and entering third grade, no thanks to Dixie. I wish that the administration had shown more concern for my son and other children who suffered from the chaos in his classroom, but the concerns raised by myself and other parents were completely ignored and were often met with shocking levels of irrational hostility. I was left with the impression that the principal and assistant principal did not care about my child, or any child at this school.

I have to admit that it is true that Dixie is 'miserable-school-central'. The teachers and administrators don't really care, but just want to talk about retiring and their retirement-bonus bucks they will receive if they teach X number of years more. It's downright shameful. We're going to a charter school.

My daughter attended Dixie last year and was miserable. We recently relocated, and she went from adoring her old school to dreading going each day at Dixie. Hopefully she will be able to recapture her love of learning after this experience.

We started at private school but made the decision to move our kids to Dixie. The best decision we ever made! The school is run by an incredible group of involved parents. Though we've been through 2 principals, I have not felt a negative impact. The teachers are amazing and my kids have terrific friends very close to home for walk-to playdates and more. The parents are a cool mix of professionals and entertainment folks - and the student body represents a healthy ethnic and socioeconomic mix. My eldest son went to Millikan Science Academy then on to North Hollywood Highly Gifted Magnet. My daughter will be in 5th grade beginning fall 2009. I highly recommend Dixie -- it feels great to have an excellent school in our very own neighborhood.

I cannot say enough outstanding things about this school and this community of families. Every staff member I have encountered, from Principal Dichter on down, warrants tremendous respect and gratitude for such care in educating our children and helping them develop great character. Responding to previous post... you describe what all parents should do for their children, regardless of what school they attend. Needless to say, one size does not fill all in this climate of budget cuts and large populations.

I've had to be very proactive to ensure that my child's individual educational needs get met. My child's teacher is lovely but seems overwhelmed. My daughter adores her teacher but there isn't enough time, attention or money for creative programming. Kids who are very bright can get bored. The principal can be gruff and inflexible. The after school playground is poorly supervised and a safety issue. LAUSD cafeteria food is just awful.

I am very pleased by Dixie Canyon Elementary. Their parent fundraising has paid for such excellent extracurricular teachers as Drama Sue and Kathy Barbro. There is also a computer expert and PE teacher paid for by parent fundraising. Our daughter had Ms Hughes as her Kindergarten teacher and I highly recommend her. We did not have a good experience last year as her teacher was absent over 40 days througout the school year often leaving no lesson plan. The principal although aware of the situation (as it had been a problem in years prior)would do little to help. We had a great experience sending my daughter to Dixie K-3 (at which point she's entering a magnet). The teachers are excellent and really caring, and the drama program administered by Sue Robinson (aka 'Drama Sue') is outstanding, covering a wide range of performing arts (from singing/musical, to poetry reading, historical recreations and even just plain acting). The parents are very involved. As of the '04/'05 semester, parental funds covered the costs of a wonderful art docent for the fine arts (drawing, sculpting, etc...)and just paid for the construction of a new and beautiful library. The school has a cozy, intimate feel, though as with all LAUSD schools, it isn't very fancy, and is lacking in the science and computer departments (as relates to equipment).

Dixie has the feel of an old-fashioned 'neighborhood' school. The children come from a variety of backgrounds and there are few serious problems. The teachers are largely experienced, hard-working, dedicated and happy to be at Dixie. There is an organized and highly effective parent group that fundraises non-stop to provide those 'extras' like art, computers, music, drama, PE and books in the library. It doesn't compare with private, but more than many other public schools. Downside, as part of LAUSD, the curriculum is very rigid and there is a great emphasis on testing, leaving little room for much beyond the 3R's. The parent group can get political and controlling; the administration is not particularly visionary. The facility is acceptable, but shows its age.

Wish more neighborhood parents would check out Dixie, before tossing thousands of dollars away on private schooling. It's so unnecessary! They could donate that 'tuition money' (or a fraction of it!) to Dixie and their child would get a great education right in their own neighborhood!

My son had a great experience at Dixie. The staff was fantastic - I couldn't have asked for a better situation.

Overall leadership at Dixie is weak. Parents on cell phones speading around corners and through the alley next to the school is a major safety problem. Ethnic families are not involved in helping shape Dixie's future (their fault, not the schools). Academics are good without creating stress cases of the children.

Great school for the Arts, though dirty politics. this school can help your child earn their 'orange folder' in any art area or academic at an early age.- Former studnte who loved their years there

Dixie is a terriffic school! We loved our years there and our son (now in middle school) still misses it and asks to visit. Drama Sue is the best! The improvisations she does with the kids expands their creativity and lets them feel good about expressing themselves. They also have (had) a full-time nurse who was most helpful with our son's allergies. The office staff is wonderful and kind to the kids. The principal makes himself regularly available to the parents. They have marvelous school-wide events that are positively joyful. The very best thing of all there is the teachers. My son's teachers made learning fun. My son came home every day with a smile.

This school has raised there standards in helping those who needed special aid. The special aid teachers are excellent and have great compansion for the children. I highly recommend this school for those children who are struggling with their studies.

There is good staff that wants to maintain excellence. It is a rare high performer in LAUSD. The school building is older and in need of some improvements.

Although we don't attend the school yet as my daughter is only in pre-school, I am so pleased to know that there is auch a strong and devoted group of parents (P4D & PTA) working so hard to enrich the school. I am excited that we have such a wonderful neighborhood school and we will have no need to go private.

I am pleasantly surprised by Dixie's quality on many levels. The teachers are enthusiastic and qualified, the school spirit is wonderful and they are doing their best to provide and arts program as well as good field trips. My daughter and I are very happy with Dixie.

I don't know why I even considered a private school! The education my two children are getting is outstanding. The parent involvement is out of this world. We are so proud to be part of the Dixie Canyon community/we are adding on to our home rather than move to another school or district. A 5 star education. Learning with nurturing.

So far so great! My daughter starts kindergarten in one week and we are very excited about the teacher and parent dedication at this school. We struggled with sending her to a Private School but decided to give our local community school a chance. Already have received a phone call and letter from her new teacher and cant wait for the first day of school where we have been invited to the Kinder Tea and Cake meet and greet.

Wouldn't have my daughter go anywhere else. The teachers and the PTA are so dedicated and involved with the students.
