INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Love this school as a parent. Love the teachers and the staff. Great academics, sports and after school clubs. The students attending this school are well behaved and disciplined. The PMS School loop email system is great and as a parent I am able to get my kid's home work schedules and grades on a daily/weekly basis. Highly recommend this school to other parents. The counselors are great and very approachable. Love the school.

Very good school. We love Mr. Masur, the new Vice Principal. He is very approachable and fair. Always actively engage with students. Most teachers in Peterson are great! Very willing to help yet let the kids also be independent. Right amount of homework. If you want to your kids to learn, let them go to Peterson. Also, many parents participates in activities like Bake Sale, Staff luncheon, Book Sale, etc. We love Peterson MS. Go Pirates!!!!

Our son has greatly enjoyed his 6th grade teachers and succeeded beyond our expectations. They have motivated him to become an independent learner and inspired him to work to his full potential. We are very happy he has access to the incredible nature center, and some opportunity to visit the adjacent Full Circle Farm, which we hope will continue to be able to collaborate with the school. For now, we couldn't be happier, and look forward to next year.

As a student who is currently enrolled in this place some call "school" I have to say, although challenging this school has a large assortment of activities for you to participate in. I call this a "school" because I feel it's more of a fun, social experience rather than a place for learning, but don't get me wrong, this school can be tough if you don't stay on top of your work. I`m not a student yet, I`m going to be next year though. At my grade school, people think "The Nerds" at school only go to Peterson. Or, "Only lucky people go to Peterson" Well...a little offensive, and some people think that this school is full of smart people. I think there`s more smart people in Peterson than Cabrillo. A lot of people say that Peterson is a excellent school. I looked around the whole school once and I thought this was much better and cleaner than Cabrillo. Peterson looks like a great school. I think everyone should have the same opinion.

You know, there are a lot of reviews on this site about "the teachers are bad" and "I have no friends," but that's really a personal issue, none more. Everyone has their own interpretation of others, not all students can be open-minded an accepted by others. Everyone is given a chance, time after time at Peterson, and it's just up to the student to choose to take it. Those who don't won't have the best experience, and those who do will come out and love the school. I had a wonderful time at Peterson, and thought all the staff members were wonderful. You may believe they are rude and unassuming, but you didn't get to know them for three years. You can't generalize off of a ten minute encounter. And every teacher is great, it's one hell of a job. You have to love what you do very much to be able to put up with some of the students. You won't like a teacher if they don't like you, and if you're a rude, lowly, reproachful student, you're not going to have a good time. But that's on you, not on the teachers. --Peterson Graduate of 2013

My daughter and I love this school, I can't believe that my daughter jumps out of bed at 6:20AM just to make it early to school, she made a lot of nice friends, is challenged by the educational program, and above all she is SAFE, there is no bullying. The Peterson + program for 6th grade was very challenging, they have honor classes for 7thand 8th grade, and an extremely competitive after school math club. The school offers so many electives to choose from and about 15 after school clubs. The principal is involved in every little detail, she's always around campus and knows the students by their names, she's always available to listen patiently to both parents and students, and helps students feel loved and safe at Peterson, she's doing an excellent job. The teachers are wonderful, the administration staff are so professional and organized, and the counselors are so knowledgeable. The PTSA is amazing, and shows how much parents are involved at Peterson. I'm so looking forward to my younger daughter joining this great school.

This is the best school I've ever been to. The teachers are wonderful and so are the students. Supervision is excellent, they even have surveillance cameras. The library is huge and has a variety of books. The principal and vice principal are very active, and very involved. There is absolutely no bullying. The curriculum is very challenging. I Love my school.

I love this school! It has so much to offer our students and parents ~ with teachers and staff modeling a strong work ethic. The students are happy to go to school each day, and that is rare for middle schoolers! They did a very good job during the lockdown situation last Fall, and I'm proud to be part of such a great school community.

We don't know where this school's attitude from. The office staffs are always so rude, never have smiles on their faces, never seem to be patient enough to answer parent's questions. We talked to at least 3 different staffs in this school and none of them seem friendly at all. The arrogant mandatory orientation without admission admission and lottery system are complete disasters for both parents and childres! My son goes to another middle school with even high API in the neighborhood middle school. They don't have lottery and mandatory partent meeting. Office staffs are super helpful and friendly. Just remember: the school API has a lot to do with the students themselves and parent's involvement. If teachers and staffs in the school have this type of attitude, please rethink of another choice such as cupertino and sunnyvale middle! Your kids will involve with the same or better quality of group of kids and not exposed to rude staffs like Peterson. Peterson middle school has some serious operation and attitude problems!!!

peterson middle school is one of the average schools in sunnyvale because they give awards to everybody in 8th grade.I thought only me will get the award but everyone gets the award.it's really awesome for other students but not for me.As i was working hard day & night for doing homework & learning what the teachers give me for reading,so only me will get the award not everybody. As with me in lunch nobody talks to me because everybody are doing their own work,i just like talking with others,as i learn about different cultures.i already graduated this year from this school, but i don't have any friends.so,i will make new friends in wilcox high school.i recommend everyone to think twice before you/anybody enroll for this school.Beaware of jolliff james is just not a good/nice teacher.i hate him & he is always giving trouble to everybody in each or the other way.

i hate this school it was absolutely horrible the teachers are all very problematic except for heidig mckenzie and joliff thats it all the other teachers need to go back to college and as for the principal and vp well they should be fired they dont do theyre job and they wonder why we students rebel and dont follow the rules cause they nag about everything i am so glad i left this school when i did. the only thing that i miss is my friends thats it and the 3 teachers i listed above. i would never send my child here. cabrillo middle school is a much better school for the santa clara parents who have children going into middle school.

Peterson is a great school. The teachers are understanding and are always willing to help. Recently Jack O'Connell, the STATE SUPERINTENDENT, came to see our Nature Center. Peterson is also a great way to prepare for high school. I made sooo many friends there!!! =]

Peterson is a wonderful school. The teachers care about their students and the students are all in all, a nice group. I felt my sons were prepared for high school after attending Peterson, particularly in English and History. The school also offers lots of clubs and sports activities, and Honors classes as well. The only drawback is the large class sizes, but I think that can bbe said for most public schools these days.

While some of the teachers are great, there are the few who fail to do their job. The 8th Grade Language Arts is lacking and very lenient. While honors classes separate the most of the people who intend to learn from the ones who don't, the people who manage schedules have made poor decisions on who gets sent to honors.

I love this school. The campus is a tab run down however the teachers make up for it! They really encourage inquiry based learning and encorage students to find their own voice. My son is in the 6th grade and has adjusted to life in middle school quite well. I am proud to be a Peterson mom!

My daughter went here for 3 years & my son is now in 7th grade. Overall, we all like the school. There has been a shake-up in teachers but I think maybe it was well-founded & they needed to move on so the Admin. could try new & different things. My son is in the honors program & doing great things. He also needed help with speech therapy & he got the help he needed & probably won't be in it this year. Most of the teachers are really great. We love the fact that they offer woods / metals / art / cooking, etc. Not all kids are geniuses & they need other outlets. We really are happy with our 4 years there & looking forward to the next 2 years there. Highly recommended!

As public schools in the area go, this one is fairly good. However, a major problem with this school (and I suppose with other public schools in this area) is student apathy. According to our daughter the majority of students at this school are not interested in learning and many are disruptive in the classroom. Our daughter has been there 3 years and will be moving on to high school next year. The teachers seem to be quite capable, but the behavior of the students is quite troubling. I can only guess it's because of a lack of parent involvement.

I think Peterson is standard when it comes to academics, not above or below my expectations. They have had a bit of an administrative shake up this year with a few teachers leaving in the middle of the year that caused some disruption to the students. The Sports programs seemed to be pretty good with the director being very dedicated and involved.

Peterson is a great School. My daughter is currently in 7th grade and I am very happy with her performance. She has been in honor roll since she started in 6th grade. It is true it much depends on the student and the parents to push it to the max, but I know that if a student doesn't have the support from the teacher, no matter what a parent does the student won't care. I think the school and the teachers are great! I have gone to several middle schools in other districts, and I have found they don't offer kids honor programs for those who are ahead on their regular classes. I think this is important because it teaches kids not to be comformists, to keep reaching for more and they end up feeling better about themselves. They have fun electives like foods and woods and good science programs!I-am-a-proud-parent-of-a-Peterson-student.

Peterson Middle School was a mediocre school with the exception of some excellent teachers. The Honors program in itself, excluding the 8th grade teachers, was a good opportunity for gifted students. Although only 7th and 8th grade students could be in the program in English and Social Studies. There was a band, no art programs besides the elective, and no extracurriculars except for sports. The administration was not the best it could be.

I thought the sixth grade program was outstanding. The sixth-grade science teachers, math teachers, and language arts teachers were excellent. They were very concerned with the kids (they offered afterschool help) and were quick to respond to parents inquiries. Also, the field trips for the sixth-grade students were fun and educational. The seventh and eighth grade programs have been okay (not as outstanding as the sixth-grade program). The pluses that I see are the afterschool homework club that is offered this year and the websites that some teachers have to inform the parents and students about their classes and the students' grades. Overall, my son who is now in 8th grade, has had a good learning experience at this school.

Academically: The math honors program is excellent. My kid went in strong and came out stronger. The English curriculum is moderate to weak in seventh & eighth grade. Social studies depends very much on the teacher: there are a few good ones. If you're main concern is academics, sign up for the sixth grade Peterson Plus Program. It is excellent. Also, stick to honors classes. The non-honors curriculum doesn't impress me at all. Overall, I was satisfied with Peterson, though I am planning to talk to the principal about the weakness in their Language Arts program. Regarding leadership, the school changed principals two years ago, then again this year. The new guy may be a real asset. Teacher quality is variable, but a few have been outstanding.

I have just been reading some of the reviews that parents have written and I have come to one conclusion: You don't really know a school, untill you have been in it. I am going to be going into the 8th grade, and I like Peterson. I went there the past two years. It is true that there are some teachers that not everyone likes (I have perosonally not liked some of my teachers), but you get that with every school. Even if I attended one of the best schools in the country, I'm sure that I will not like some of the teachers. It all comes down to one simple fact: No school is perfect. I have something to say to all of you parents who wrote bad reviews: Even though I have to defend my school like this, I will not see it be vandilized by words and critizisims.

My sister attended Peterson and she even made honor roll as a special Ed student. This was not good because they didn't show her that she had to do her work they just gave her pats on the back for turning in anything. I agree this in not a good school. She was not prepared in anyway for high school and is now a high school dropout. Definitely think twice before sending your child to this school.

My child is in 8th grade and I cant believe the segregation of children who are not doing well and the ones that are.The good are praised and the struggleing ignored and banished. The school holds 'special' days of fun for passing students and the rest stay behind still with no help but pushed off to other schools or pushed aside. Shame on peterson! Where's the compasion or real teachers at? Want to have your attend here? Run! run fast and hard! you will also be notified a month later by teachers of how your student is doing and it's too late to do anything. This schools main focus is attendance for money and if there attendance is not excused, they will get suspended.

Our 'special needs' 6th grader has not received services and support needed to be successful at Petersen. The classes are 35+ in some cases and the staff not motivated to assist outside of the 'norm.' The counseling staff has not been of much help. Seems like they have not kept up on their education and knowledge. The principal is very detatched and would not even meet with us!Weird! Very disappointing for us. Might be ok for regular ed. kids that blend in.

This school has been big disappoinment. It is probably fine for others kids but our eigth grader needs a lot of help, which have not been available, The caliber of some of the teachers has been chockingly poor. It has therefore given none of the adventages of a hug school.
