This is a truly remarkable school with a Blue Ribbon Award. The teachers are very well qualified and caring. They communicate with parents on a regular basis. There is an excelent before and after school program. They also offer enrichment programs after school. This school provides a truly exceptional learning environment.
I have several children at the school and not impressed with the academics. Memorize and spit out useless facts seems to be the method of teaching. A few teachers are the exception. One parent project after another is assigned - hence little time for the child to learn basic skills of how and where to retrieve information. This lack of 'teaching' is reflected overall in the high school, where college acceptance rates are dismal.
Acedemic programs are very good but very high expectations are required for both students & parents in order to maintain average performance at school. School facilities are very good since it is quite new. School also offered variety of academic activities.
Focus is on basics -- reading, writing, math. Seems that most kids are above average in their grade level abilities. School is very proud of their academic accomplishments which sometimes makes me feel that academic accomplishment is of primary importance and attention to individual talents are less important. Extracurricular activities are offered through PTA. Parent involvement is very high. Plenty of volunteers to assist in classroom and lots of input from parents.
My children attend Helmers Elementary and it is a wonderful school. I feel my children are safe and are receiving a great education. The GATE program is almost non-existant and that is very disappointing to me. Overall, it is a great school.
Helmer's has outstanding academic programs. They provide a special arts program and Chords music program for the children. Extremely active PTA.
Helmers is a high quality school in a upper middle class suburban area. The school is very structured and this is good for some and not others. Fairly homogenous school with a formula and centers style of teaching. Lacks extracurricular activities as most schools do in Santa Clarita.
We just moved to the area and this school has been great to work with. They have been extremely helpful, from the Office Manager, Teacher, and Daycare. This is not our home school of choice we were told we had to go here, because our school was already full. I am so impressed with everything here at Helmers I am now requesting that this be our permanent school.
Parents are very involved with the school, and the teachers live in the neighborhood. The school, however, is crowded; it was built for 600 and currently has double that amount.
