Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My son has been at VCS since kindergarten and although all his years have been great, he had his best year ever in middle school. He learned a lot from his dedicated 6th grade teachers who got to know him and truly care. We have some exceptional teachers in 7th and 8th grade too. I'm looking forward to 2 more great years at VCS.

VCS is a great school for the elementary school years, but completely falls apart for middle school due to the constant teacher turnover. VCS has a lot of very dedicated parents that help keep the school going, and some great teachers, and the school would be a great school if only it were allowed to fully teach using the EL method, but being a VCUSD dependent charter, it isn't allowed to do so, as VCUSD gets in the way of its success.

Vallejo Charter School Wow, great school what a change. We have two children at Vallejo Charter. One went to another primary school last year, and struggled. This year has been a complete change for the better. The parents are motivated and involved, which helps student motivation and discipline. Teachers and principal have been outstanding in our experience. Really, the only drawback is the campus infrastructure. The location is great (surrounded by park) but the facilities are old and showing the wear.

I love this community based school my son looks forward to going everyday! I get a message from the school almost every night just keeping me up to speed on things. I feel welcome everytime I step foot on campus . The principal is always interacting with students . It seems to me that all adults parents or staff is envolved with students and I think that is very important! I know I made a great choice sending my son to this school!

I disagree with that last poster, however the principal has announced she is leaving, so the 2012-2013 school year will have another new principal, which is hard on the school. But working in an Expeditionary Learning Charter School is very hard work, so I hope the next principal understands that and is willing to stay for the long haul. I love the school as does my student. I think it is the best public school option in Vallejo because of the Expeditionary Learning model, the family volunteer component and the art and dance program, which our families fundraise for each year. I also love the sense of community at VCS.

The principal was ABSOLUTELY deficient in leadership and social skills. Most of the teachers appeared to be proficient but they were demoralized and frustrated by an overbearing and tone-deaf principal (I had the misfortune of landing in the classroom of the two worst teachers for my child's grade level). Parent participation was forced, mandatory, and quite cliqueish-I would show up, sign in, and leave after my presence had been noted-I WAS MISERABLE! I pulled my child out of that school as fast as I could run after one year-I would have left at the end of the first month if it had been possible and there were several other parents who followed suit. Due to GreatSchools Rules of Use I can not name the principal & teacher who contributed to the miserable experience that I and a few other parents suffered through but I will say that we were there during the 2010-2011 school year-WHAT AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE!!!

VCS is a school that was pioneered by parents that wanted a better education in a California that has failed to make education a priority. VCS has also overcome the odds of residing in a bankrupt city while still increasing the school's API score by 8.5%. This is a school that teaches that all students, faculty and parents are 'crew members, not passengers' and truly lives up to that statement. I'm proud that my daughter attends VCS as it represents that we do have the power to go against the grain and beat the odds.

Vallejo Charter School is a wonderful place for children, families, and staff to grow and learn together. If I could have designed a school, it would have been this one. The Design Principles guide us to help not only our school, but our community and world.

My kids used to be in a private school. It was just the perfect timing having a charter school here in Vallejo. We went to the orientation 2 1/2 years ago and felt it was a perfect place for our kids! It was at a temporary site, so it was not even because of the facility, but what the school believes in, its goals, its positive outlook. We loved and we are glad to be in this VCS family! Would I recommend it to my family and friends, definitely! Thank you for the opportunity!!! Go VCS!!!! Go Vallejo Charter School!

My son has found a new love for school since he started attending Vallejo Charter School in 2007. We love the curriculum lay-out and the style of teaching. Our school community operates as a team; we have tons of parent volunteer support, which is an obvious added value. I feel that the staff does their best (and then some) for the students. We hope that we can someday expand to a Vallejo Charter High School! :)

This is a small school with a huge heart! It's like the little train that kept saying 'I think I can, I think I can' as it labored up the hill... Guess what? It could! This is a school committed to inspiring it's student's & the community at large to strive for the mountain tops, because they can...Good luck!

Parents in Vallejo have struggled for 20 years (that I know of) to create a positive school situation. Eventually they gave up and sent their kids to private schools, lie about their address so kids go to school out of town, move away, home school etc. Vallejo Charter School is a great school made possible by parental participation. It's creative, exciting, innovative. It's an asset to the community. They use a lottery to select students because everyone wants in. People said 'it couldn't be done' but this dedicated group of parents (learning from all who 'failed' before them) did the impossible! I believe these parents deserve the Nobel Prize for bettering our bankrupt city, for never giving up hope! 'Yes we can!'

My daughter was in kindergarten this last year. Her teacher, Mrs. Stats, was amazing! Love the concepts and ideas they are trying to implement. My only complaint is the delay of construction at the Hiddenbrooke site.
