After spending the first half of the year at another very well known and sought after LAUSD school on the other side of the Valley, we moved and were assigned to Hamlin Charter Academy as our local school. I was concerned that my daughter might have difficulty adjusting to a new environment, but my fears were gone when I met her new kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Betts. Mrs. Betts is warm, gentle, and kind to her students. She is willing to address any concerns parents might have, and even gives out her personal phone number for calling or texting after school hours. Within a week of being in the class, my daughter became a "reader" and was excited to go to school everyday. The school also offers lots of extra programs like computer lab and weekly music classes. We feel very lucky that Hamlin is our school.
My daughter just finished kindergarten at Hamlin, and it was a wonderful experience. Mrs. Klima is the best! This is a small elementary school in a nice little neighborhood with a principal that truly cares about the students. They put a great deal of thought into which students will be a good fit with certain teachers, and always seem to put the students first. Like most schools in LAUSD, the budget is a struggle, but they still managed to have art, computer and music classes. There are many great schools in the West Valley, but this one is a hidden gem.
Part 1: What's a better way to appreciate your teacher during appreciation week then to post what a Great Teacher she is. To Miss Atalla our 4th grade Advanced Teacher. What are the qualities that make you a Great Teacher: 1.A great teacher respects students. In a classroom, each person s ideas and opinions are valued. 2. A great teacher creates a sense of community and belonging in the classroom. The mutual respect in this classroom provides a supportive, collaborative environment. 3. A great teacher is warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring. she is approachable, not only to students, but to everyone on campus. 4. A great teacher sets high expectations for all students. She realizes that the expectations she has for her students greatly affect their achievement; she knows that students generally give to teachers as much or as little as is expected of them. 5. A great teacher has her own love of learning and inspires students with her passion for education and for the course material. She constantly renews herself as a professional on her quest to provide students with the highest quality of education as possible.
You know your lucky if there is one teacher that really make a positive difference in your child's life, and that teach is Miss Atalia. This is Miss Atalia first year at Hamlin Charter Academy, teaching our 4th grade advance class and she is an incredible teacher. Her focus is always on all the children in her class. She is very organized with her lesson planning and is up-to-date with all the new curriculum, but keeps it fun and interesting, which helps our children in so many ways. My child loves how she taught them science with real experiments. She has taught the children to not only respect their teacher and other classmates, but to respect themselves and to always try their best and work hard to achieve their goals. Out of all the years we have been at Hamlin, there has only been a handful of teachers who you will ever see after school, wiling to make time to speak with parents and take extra time with children who might need it; you couldn't ask for a teacher with more passion and dedication helping our children succeed. The 4th grade advance class is her expertise, she really helps prepare our kids for the 5th grade better then any other 4th grade teacher here. THANK YOU!!
We were formerly at a very expensive & well-known private school. We have 2 boys who are both at the top of their class and doing fantastic. They love their teachers & respect the principal. Mr Herrera, Mr Vazquez & Mr Heurta are some of the best educators I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and having impact our lives so deeply. My children admire them so much.My children make that extra effort because they know you all truly care about their success. Mrs Kaplan sets such high standards for both the children & the staff, I feel it far surpasses private school expectations. Keep raising the bar Mrs Kaplan. Our children deserve a great education. Veronica, Wendy & child is hurt, I know that Veronica, their teacher & Mrs Kaplan are caring for my child as if they are my child's parent. I picked this school very carefully and am very pleased with the education, attention and respect my family had received. I highly recommend this school & the teachers I listed. These are wonderful people who are very dear to my family. Thank you all & please continue the exceptional job you are all doing.
I've had my child at Hamlin for the past 3 years and I have nothing but positive things to say. Principal, teachers, office staff even the janitor are nothing but nice, caring people. My child is very comfortable in class and at the school in general and so am I. This school is one in a million!!!
Hamlin Charter Academy is AMAZING........although there is not that much Parent involvement the teachers that Principal Kaplan has brought on board this year makes up for it. I have a child in the 4th grade advanced class with Mrs. Atalia and I can not say enough wonderful things about her. I'm sure it was hard for her to come into an already established school with students & parents who have already been there for a few years, but she is AMAZING. Her teaching styles are top notch, her communication with parents is awesome, her desire to be involved in all school related activities is breath of fresh air. My child has never been so excited to go to school. I highly recommend Hamlin and if you are one of the lucky ones to have your child taught by her you will not be disappointed.
This school is a hidden gem in the West Valley. Small class sizes, a very involved PTA, and lots of extracurricular activities are just a few benefits of enrolling your child in Hamlin. The principal is an innovator who is not afraid to push the boundaries of the LAUSD. She fights for her students, her teachers, and her school and when she says she is going to bring something new to Hamlin, she does it! The school is known for its diversity and strong academics. Every teacher is willing to go the extra mile to help the students achieve success.
Hamlin Charter Academy is a wonderful school in the west San Fernando Valley. We are a diverse school where children are accepting of cultures and languages. We have a fabulous staff of caring teachers who strive to assist all children with their needs. We have wonderful opportunities for children to participate in orchestra and even ballroom dancing. Our PTA and Parent Center are fabulous. Our state of the art computer lab and computer teacher help our children to learn critical technology for the future! We have a fabulous garden club for students too! Hamlin is a wonderful place to be!
Principal, teachers, staff and PTA work really hard to make this little school great! Full time computer teacher, YMCA on campus, new enrichment programs starting soon and great after care at Noble kids. More parent involvement would be the icing on the cake.
I LOVE THIS SCHOOL!!! my daughters love the school, the teachers. They're learning a lot and I'm so glad for that! Principal, Teachers, Staffs, Volunter everybody help. I can say we are so lucky to have our kids in this school!
I put my child in to Hamlin for the diversity factor. I Academically it is not up to a high enough standard, with such a diverse range of levels in a class. It is not enough to just teach the day before for assessment tests, and I am not surprised that there is a steady decline in CST results. My husband and I ready dislike the monthly certificates for attendance. I get that your child's attendance is important financially to the school but I would rather they focus on rewarding kids for good behavior or improvement in academics. I wasn't impressed with the administration staff, they could do better at keeping up with what is going on and look you in the eye when talking.
The best thing about this school is the Principal She is amazing she always listen to the parents always concern about students. I am glad she takes action if parents are having issues with staff or teachers that means a lot, Mrs Kaplan is the best. I am glad she is the Principal in Hamlin 5 stars to her.
This school is the worst everytime I have questions concerning my children the office is the worst attitude. Like if they even hate being there. I received a missed call from the school I call back and let them know I had a missed call. There response was I don't know I cant help you and they even laugh about it seriously this is not the first time I really think this a very rude. I trust them with my kids and this is the response I get. And teachers are rude maybe 3 or 4 of them are nice. they are giving there time to the children I don't recommend it
Hamlin has been a positive experience for my Kindergartner. The class teacher has shared knowledge on a wide range of topics and maintained the discipline standards so necessary for transitioning into higher grades.Kudos to the parent community for doing what they best can although I feel there needs to be more.
I love this school!! My daughter is in Kindergarten there and although she's one of the youngest in her class she has not only excelled but is at first grade level in reading and math. Her teacher is very involved and keeps us up to date on our daughter's progress. I saw that the school has lost one point in rating since the last several years' score and I don't know what that's based on (guessing some kind of test scores) but I can say that we've been very pleased so far. We look forward to sending our younger daughter there as well, when the time comes.
I was wondering if there were any parents who could give some more updated reviews of this school. We are looking to send our kids here next year but are concerned about the 5th grade scores...We know scores aren't everything. Is there a good blend of academics, enriching activities? Are strong students challenged enough? Behavior issues? Any info would be awesome!
I am amazed how quickly the principal has incorporated the suggestions of parents this year. Walking into Hamlin on the first day and seeing how many parents were there carrying supply donations to their child's class just shows how much our parents care about this school. There was no confusion as to where your child needed to go, which classroom & teacher they were assigned to . The principal was out there greeting everyone, the teachers all looked well rested and enthusiastic to see our kids. I am looking forward to even a better year than we had last year. I give props to the Principal for turning this school around, for the teachers coming together with the parents to help this school achieve more than what LAUSD has to offer.
Very disappointing year at Hamlin this year. Last year my daughter had a fantastic year and my husband and I were so pleased with her progress. This year the composition of the class was disastrous and there were several children with behavioural issues. There were two fourth grade classes and they actually put all bar one African American girl in the same class together. For a school that is so diverse in nationalities, I found this deplorable. I talked to the teacher and was told this was not allowed but as this was her first year and she didn't want to make trouble. As a parent I would always recommend volunteering. You really need to make sure that the teacher assigned to your child is a good fit. Parental involvment was an all time low in this class and I felt so deeply for the teacher and all she had to go through this year. When you have such large cass sizes and such an array of levels in one class you have to be an advocate for your child and make sure they are learning what they need to be learning.
This listen hidden gem has been a blessing for us..Our son enetered kindergarten this year and Mrs. Esquer has been an amazing teacher..Love the PTA, the principal is very supportive and dedicated to making this school great!!
