HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Denver Academy has been a great place for my son. The teachers "get" him and he enjoys going to school. Every year he has been placed with a teacher that fits his learning style. If he weren't at Denver Academy, I have no doubt that he would have failed out by now. I'm so glad we found Denver Academy!

Denver Academy is a school that shows the love of learning. As you walk the campus, you can tell how much the students succeed by the smiles on their faces and the activities they are involved with. Rather they are studying poetry by the pond or understanding the ecosystem on the varying sites on the campus. Denver academy offers as wide variety of ways to learn and help students succeed in their learning.

Denver Academy is an amazing school period. I have one child in High School at Denver Academy (DA) and one in public school at Cherry Creek High School. Both are great schools but the faculty, staff, and administration at DA are in another league when in comes to crafting an individual learning plan for each student. The environment at DA is inclusive, friendly, like a family. Students show respect for each other and their teachers. I know several recent DA graduates and they are doing well in college and in life. DA is expensive but without the kind of individualized learning experience DA has given my child he never would have made it through High School. My child is extremely smart, yet public schools don't have the knowledge or inclination to educate a child with ADD and a processing disorder. Best of all the philosophy at DA is that home work is the responsibility of the student and the teacher NOT THE PARENT. That alone is worth the tuition.

Denver Academy is life changing. In one quarter, my daughter's anxiety, depression, migraines, and stomach aches she has had the last 6yrs literally disappeared. When her ADD was not properly addressed in school, these problems arose, worsened to the point that the idea of school made her physically sick. DA gave her the space to grow and learn without pressure and to truly help her learn in ways she connected to - she thrived. She has gone from hating school to wanting to be there. From hating homework to somewhat enjoying it. Most importantly there is hope for a bright future as her grades improve and she learns to challenge herself. I also personally love being a parent at this welcoming, communicative, and extremely friendly school. They welcome input, advice, and ideas. The staff is bright, creative, laid back, and truly gets kids with learning differences like no other place on earth. I have learned more in free parent support groups and school sponsored educational nights that I have in years of therapy. I feel so lucky to live in Colorado - so that my daughter can have this amazing educational experience that will last a lifetime!

Denver Academy has done wonders for our daughter who has a somewhat rare learning disability. She is very bright, yet struggled in another private school because the teachers did not know how best to help her learn. Also at her old school she had trouble fitting in socially and was bullied. Not at DA! Bullying is not tolerated, and staff works very hard to teach kids to accept each other. My daughter is excelling academically because DA teachers are trained in how to teach her and to provide just the right amount of challenge for her needs. The one-on-one attention at DA is outstanding! I feel DA staff truly care about each and every student, and they all seem to love what they do. They truly see education as a partnership between parent, student and teacher.

Denver Academy's philosophy, quality teaching staff, out-reaching counselors, visionary administrators, concerned parents, dedicated and tireless volunteers, and blossoming students make this a truly transformative environment and experience. Teachers have an in-depth understanding of their students personally and academically, as well as a broad, eclectic, yet focused, curriculum and approach to teaching and learning. With such a variety of methods utilized by both teachers and students, growth is observable emotionally and academically, resulting in happier kids and families. It is a valuable investment to help build a solid foundation for a future. In academic terms it's an A+. In Maslow's terms, it's the top of the pyramid!

Denver Academy is 100% amazing, my son has never passed a class in regular education - even with re mediated course work. He had to take anxiety medication just to make it through the day. He now since beginning school in August is functioning at grade level and doing well- he is doing this completely off medication. His outlook on life, gate, affect and eye contact have all changed dramatically.Having a team of totally devoted educators that love their job and love children have definitely impacted the kids but all those lives around the kids- think how many of these children will go on to impact the World- Hip hip Hooray for DA!!!

The best school for any child who needs an education outside the box. For four years my sons teachers have always been extraordinary; his current homeroom teacher has a masters degree in literature. They bend over backward to provide exactly the encouragement, accommodations, and motivation that each child responds to. Each child is treated with respect for their individual talents. In response to the poor reviews; my son tests poorly on standardized tests, because he is a slow processor, but a closer look clearly reveals him to be at or above grade level. So yes, if you go back to a public education where they assess the child solely with testing, they might easily look behind. We are looking forward to another four years in this unique and exceptional environment.

Denver Academy has made the difference for my 6th grader. He is now confident, happy, and loves going to school. During his first year here, his reading level shot up by two grade levels! The Denver Academy staff is an amazing group- they are highly competent, caring, and committed to each and every student's success.

I wish I had started my daughter at this school years ago. My daughter loves this school. She isn't ignored like she was at her previous public school. They truly care about my daughter's education and want her ,and all of their students, to be successful. They also educate parents and help them in any way possible. I drive an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening to have my daughter go to school here. She is learning, she is building confidence, and she now loves school. We love Denver Academy!

Denver Academy has helped 2 of my 3 children. Mitch has ADHD, and Jessica is dyslexic. Jessica just graduated from DA and is now in college and loving it. I am thankful that I have another child at DA, which allows me to be a part of this special community. Jessica is such a great self advocate , that college is a challenge she understands and is able to succeed at. All of this is because of Denver Academy. Mitchell is a different child...very smart...and DA has been able to challenge him and accept his learning differences and work with those! Everyone is accepted at DA. No bullying allowed. It is truly an exceptional school. 5 stars!

Denver Academy was a great school for my son. They got to know him - what he liked, what he didn't like, how he learned, what were the barriers to his learning and what were the things that motivated him. With this knowledge they tailored his education to be interesting, motivating and captivating. He is now a senior in college!

I am a Denver Academy alum and I was surprised to see some negative reviews. I struggle with executive functioning (organization, planning, long-term memory etc.). Think ADD. I attended Denver Academy from fourth grade through high school. I went to, and was successful in, college. I now have a master's degree and have embarked on a career that I love. If the Denver Academy today is anything like the Denver Academy of my youth then I can not imagine a better place for a student with learning differences.

My son went to 1 top public & 2 private schools before attending DA. He has finally found a home. He is dyslexic & exceptional and has excelled at DA. Kids aren't stupid; they only feel good about themselves if they feel academically challenged and have real friendships. My son has been at DA for 1 year & is happy. Kids that have behavior issues might want to look elsewhere. This school is geared towards kids that have dyslexia or other learning issues. As far as teachers having advanced degrees, our teacher has a Master's in Ed. One thing that I didn't expect is that the teachers are kind of alternative in a good way, the kids love them. We left a top public school because of the teacher's rigid styles. The teachers are smart and intuitive and clearly well trained. My son loves his teacher, & had made friends. A parent needs to be realistic about where his child is academically - it's hard. The student will get there at DA, it might not be at the pace that the previous parent was looking for. It is a difficult thing to do, but once you embrace your child he will be mentally and academically strong, at his pace. Going to DA will change your child's life - go to DA.

I can't say enough good things about Denver Academy. My son began school at DA in the middle of the 9th grade. He is severely dyslexic and a slow processor who was failing in a Douglas County high school with a GPA below 1.0. After moving him to DA he has excelled. He is in the 10th grade now on honor roll and a GPA in the high 3's. His self esteem is beginning to elevate after years of poor grades and teachers who did not understand him or have the patience to teach him. I love DA and plan to send my 2nd child there next year to begin the 9th grade. DA has been a safe haven for my son and my family. It is very difficult to find a school when your child does not fit the mold of most children. I would recommend DA to anyone who does not feel public education is working for their child.

Our granddaughter had been in special education in public school before going to DA and was on a downward spiral. She cried every morning and found excuse after excuse not to go to school. She had been diagnosed with ADHD and was really struggling. She started DA in the middle of 7th grade and is now a senior. From day one at DA she loved going to school and rarely missed. Keeping her there has financially been very difficult! However, it has been worth every cent we've all spent because she has become a self assured lovely young women with a positive future. How can anyone put a price on that?

Buyer beware! Your student may feel better emotionally after a bad time at another school, but do not expect your child to receive an education. DA's review does not belong in "Great Schools" - it is far from "great." They are far from experts in the area of special ed. The teachers are hired based on other criteria and are in way over their head. Even with guidance, from you the parent, about what works for your child, they will not get it and their is no accountability. Do not trust their in house test scores. My child, when tested appropriately in order to leave and go public, was a full 2 years below what they had found in their testing. Run, run, run!! save your kids future. If you plan to have them re-enter public setting be prepared because your student is academically very far behind.

Denver Academy does not have the core services that one would expect from an institution that charges between $22,000 and $26,000 per year. Fundamentals are missing including speech and occupational therapy as well as other proven techniques to help students with learning differences. The principals and head master are somewhat arrogant and not interested in hearing input that includes a critical assessment of what is missing. Further the staff is not educated appropriately to handle these students. I believe there are few if any master degrees amongst the teachers. Finally, behavior is a big issue as DA has a relaxed behaviorial admission requirements. Behavior in the primary school was a big problem for our child and the school/principals failed to address this in an effective manner.

Denver Academy has made a positive impact in my child's life: she's learning self-esteem, social appropriateness and mental stimulation. She really enjoys school, now. This makes her happy (and her family!). Denver Academy has built a great staff, a great environment and great resources - thank you DA for all you do.

This beautiful, caring school has made a world of difference in my granddaughters life. The instructors make school fun and learning a challenge. They also teach kindness and understanding. The small classes give the teachers a chance to know each child. It is a wonderful educational experience for all who are lucky enough to go there.

DA has been a gift to our son who has ADD and has a very unique learning profile. He had a wonderful middle school experience. He stepped away for the first semester of 9th grade, but wanted to go back to DA, where he felt smart and capable, after two months. I have found the teachers to be very good and dedicated to the success of each student. It's such a gift to have a teacher actually know your child and his abilities and how to motivate him to do his best.

We have tried others, but came back to Denver Academy. This is a great school for students who have learning differences or need more time to process information. The school provides many opportunities to excel. My son is not coddled at DA, he is expected to work to his potential and articulate his difficulties so the teachers can help him help himself. 5 star in my opinion.

Denver Academy may work for some students who learn differently but it does not work for all. My child has ADD, struggles in public school and is fairly smart. My child struggles because of learning differences compounded by ADD. DA was unable to teach my child. They were unable to provide an environment where my child felt safe and accepted. Most of the teachers did not understand nor have the patience and maybe the interest to work with my child. Noneof the teachers we had had a background or education in working with students who have ADD and learn differently. Also most did not have a degree in the subject they taught. Which was really surprising. We were disappoiinted with our experience at Denver Academy. The curriculum seemed too easy and our child did not excel.

Denver Academy is an amazing private school for students with learning differences or students who just learn better with more one-on-one attention. Class sizes are generally around 13 students with 1 teacher and generally 1 teaching assistant. Teachers address all learning styles so that all types of learners are able to succeed in this environment.
