HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

UPark has been an excellent school for our family for the past 3 years. We live in the neighborhood and looked at other schools, including private, and are so glad we chose UPark. They are known for their Wellness Program, which has been great. They also have a one-of-a-kind before and after school program. Some of the programs are free, and some of them are paid and include science, math, drama, writing, cooking, etc. UPark is also a Janus Blended Learning site, which means we got technology for the classrooms from the Janus Foundation, but they also give support and training so teachers know how to use it to individualize instruction. The community is very warm and welcoming, and everyone gets to know each other. We are very culturally and socio-economically diverse. A lot of the parents are students or professors from DU and come from all over the world, and the school celebrates the different backgrounds and makes it a learning experience.

We are almost through our first year at UPark and I cannot say what a wonderful experience this has been for our son. He is absolutely thriving in this environment both academically and emotionally. All of his teachers are amazing educators and have instilled a love of learning in our son. We could not be happier with our choice of school and feel incredibly lucky to have such an incredible resource in our community.

We love this school!!!! All of the positive reviews are in line with what we are experiencing. However, we cannot give this school a full 5 star rating due to the extremely large class size (25 kids in a K class!!!!) The teachers are VERY good but sometimes I worry if our child will receive enough instruction time to reach full potential. Our child is ahead of the curve in some areas and I don't yet have a handle on whether they will have the time to do more advanced instruction or if our child will stay at par with the rest of the class in those areas---meaning we will be supplementing the more advanced training at home. So far so good, and our child loves school. The teachers seem to have a good program in place to instruct all of those little people and overall the school performs very well. It is just something we are keeping a close eye on as we progress through the year.

Truly great school. Unlike most highly rated schools, UPark has a higher percentage of minority students, as well as students receiving free and reduced lunch. As many have noted, the diversity is what makes this school so special. I am confident that my son is receiving a well rounded education both academically and emotionally. Very happy with our choice to attend!

University Park Elementary incorporates a diverse population -- by ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status -- into a strong, cohesive school. One of our coolest celebrations is Multicultural Night, a giant potluck where we eat enchiladas, couscous, and Texas BBQ. The academic success at the school defies all our differences, and the kids are happy and smart and caring. As parents, we couldn't be more pleased with the education our children are receiving.

We could not be happier with our choice to have our daughter attend UPark. The administration, teaching and overall school community is top notch from every perspective. Parents are highly involved and collaborative with the administration and teachers. The healthy choices and diverse community are not just lip service, they are truly embraced and celebrated. The school lives it's values inside and out. Love it!

Jewel of Denver, 1 of a kind: top among "Healthiest"rated in state. Wellness program, AM running. Highly involved parent community. Longevity of staff, and dedicated teachers with stable population. Arts infused. Diverse in languages, international families. Cutting edge thinking skills curriculum based on brain research and growing technology. Newest public school learning landscape.

University Park is a DPS success story. It has earned praise for its rigorous curriculum, diverse programming and nationally recognized commitment to health, safety and wellness. The faculty includes numerous locally and nationally recognized educators, leaders of their respective disciplines. The school and neighborhood community play a tremendous role in supporting individual classrooms and extending opportunities for all students inside and outside the school, including special events, guest speakers and excursions to cultural centers throughout the Denver Metro Area. Various fundraisers held throughout the year provide thousands of dollars to support essential people and programs. Safety is paramount. Children embrace the school's touchstone, which encourages them to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and a joyful curiosity of the world around them. Teachers are firm but fair and counsel students to become problem solvers when conflicts arise. There exists a tremendous sense of belonging. People greet one another with a smile and welcome individuals to be a part of the UPark team.

I love this school. I learn so much in every subject. Each teacher teaches me so much every day. I love to write and every year I have been here I have learned something spectacular. Each teacher is so marvelous. They teach every subject with passion. Every staff member and teacher have made me fill with glee. The school is so friendly. I moved to this school from a private school with my twin brother. He LOVES gym. I do to. My favorite subject is well every single one!!! The teachers make boring subjects into something great. On my very first day of Upark I made several new friends so did my brother. The principal is SO nice!!!!!! She takes every idea into her heart. If you are thinking about going to this school GO!!! There is a very challenging challenge program and several after school activities. I am in fifth grade and am extremely gloomy that I will be leaving Upark. Yet I hope the other kids will be moving up into the next fabulous years. Upark makes very kid feel special.cthis school is extremely unique, I LOVE IT!!!!

Our family loves the Wellness Program at UPark, We weren't there when it was started, but it is really nice to come to a school where healthy food and exercise is the focus. They have fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks, healthy food at celebrations, teachers don't use candy to reward kids, and birthdays are non-food celebrations. The run program before school in the morning is cool and my kids love it. I think it is once or twice a year for many weeks and the kids can earn tokens that they love. This school is definitely different from other schools and really a special place.

We also have an excellent band program and programs for kids with special needs.

Founded in the late 1880's as a teaching school for the University of Denver, University Park has served its community as a fabulous learning environment for both neighborhood students and now students from across the city. University of Denver students still stay involved with the school, offering an award winning after school tutoring program. One of the reasons I love University Park so much is the support I have received for the physical education program. The parents and staff care about wellness for the whole child: physically through the belief in nutrition education and physical education, mentally throughhigh academic expectations and emotionally through bullyproofing and the use of the 'Brainwise' curriculum.

We have a fantastic principal, Dana Williams, who works endlessly to make our school a great school. We also have devoted teachers and parents who ensure that everyday is a good day for the children; ranging from making sure they get out of the car safely through our Kiss N' Go program to devoting extra time for those kids in class who may need academic guidance in the classroom. One person may make a difference but working together, the parents, teachers and staff give the children the motivation to move mountains.

I am a parent of two kids at the school. I have been very impressed with the kind community of parents and the great teachers. We have a great new principal. I would like to say that Dennis Thompson our previous principal was fabulous. I would completely disagree with the previous comment that he was not engaged. He was extremely active and always answered any concern that a parent had. I wanted this clarified. I chose the school because of him and have been very happy and sad to see him go. But, love the new principal Dana Williams she is fabulous.

I continue to be amazed at this school! We have an amazing new principal. We have a GT teacher to address the needs of higher achievers, as well as the academic performance of all students. We have a really active parent community to work on the new gardens, address the safety of drop-offs, provide tips for healthy habits in eating and exercise, and volunteer many, many hours of help in the classroom. As a parent I am so pleased with the teachers ability to get the students excited about learning and truly love it. We have the best potluck in town because we invite all of our families (from many countries) to share their customs and wonderful food. It has been a wonderful place for our boys over the last 7 years.

My son attended University Park Elementary last year. I found that the academics at the school and programs available were great. However, I was extremely disappointed with the principal. When I went to him as a concerned parent looking for changes in safety and supervision policies involving the younger kids in the school I felt totally ignored and brushed off. As a result I took my child out the school.

I'm a parent at University Park and have 2 children there. We have been at the school for 5 years in total and love the school. The staff and teachers are exceptional. We have been pleased with the academic challenges, the safe and welcoming enviroment and the school administration. We have an excellent principal and staff who really care about our kids. U-Park is a leader in assuring kids receive ample time for movement and PE as well has having healthy food offerings at school. We really appreciate the work of the Wellness Team at U-Park and appreciate all the school does for kids. We are also really excited about the run program for kids this past fall and the gardens we will be planting in the spring.

It's simply a great school in a great neighborhood. My wife and I have had our 2 boys at UPark for 4 years now and still believe it is the best choice for them. The teachers have all provided a good challenge for the kids and we have been happy with their efforts. The teachers are all well trained in differentiated instruction which allows them to meet the needs of everyone in their classroom (including HGT/GT, even though it is not a magnet program). The parent community is strong and works hard to provide some of the extras. The Enrichment Program provides a wide variety of opportunities and just gets better each year. The cultural diversity (due to our proximity to DU) is great and reflects our world today. UPark is adding a 3/4 preshool program next year and the momentum is good for the primary grades. Check it out!

University Park is one of Denver's top neighborhood schools -- meeting all of my children's social, emotional, academic and physical needs! UPark students participate in a full range of specials -- art/music and physical education -- and the community has successfully kept class sizes low. Academically, I am very pleased (my gifted students needs have been met -- and additional challenge and enrichment has always been available to them). Because of our proximity to the University of Denver (and the unique partnership our school has developed with them) our community is diverse -- often representing over 20 different countries from around the world. All of this -- and we can walk to school -- and have impromptu playdates with classmates. If you are searching for a strong community with a great neighborhood school then University Park is for you!!

I was told a great deal about University Park Elementary by a friend. The office staff and the principal were kind and courteous. Upon returning to visit the classrooms however, we were surprised to simply be shown to the 'specials' class that the children were engaged in and did not have the opportunity to speak at all with the first grade teachers. This was quite a disappointment to us and we chose another school for our son. If teachers cannot take a few minutes of their 'specials' time to speak with potential parents, maybe they will not be willing to take extra minutes with children who require assistance.

This is my childrens first year at Univ. Park and I have found that the school work (in comparison to other elementry schools we have experienced) is more challenging and at a higher level of actual assignments,(larger) than that we have known. I like that the expectations and challenges are progressed. It gives them reason to keep moving towards a greater knowledge and excellance in the work witch will roll over into their actual living experiences. On the other end of the spectrum, I have never experienced and have seen and heard such need for immediate, urgent education and resorces in school bullying and safety. I have witnessed on a daily basis, hitting , teasing, name calling, intimidations, sexual references from children 1st to 5th grade. I have heard a friend of my sons talk about running away secreatly and have passed it on yet he continues to speek of actual event.

We have been University Park Elementary School for 6 years (between our two kids, so far) and it has been an amazing academic and social experience for our children. The teachers truly love what they do, as eveidenced by how they run the classroom. My kids are challenged academically and have high self esteem. This school truly supports the successes of all children. I am always touched when I see 5th graders helping the younger kids. I see that kind of display daily. This school is a safe, nurturing, warm place to be. It is a place where kids really get to be kids without compromising strong academics. Kids leave this school extremely prepared for middle school and with a love for learning. We couldn't ask for more.
