Integrated speech/language/OT/social skills. They use rock wall climbing weekly in a multi-discipline approach. 30 minute teacher conferences twice a year. Up to 10 page detailed reports on my individual child's testing results, focus points for the year, and strengths. This school focuses on each student with specific teaching styles. I feel like the teachers really know the students. Their low (4:1) student-teacher ration allows this. Learning issues and attention issues are not viewed by teachers as a distraction. They are viewed as part of the child. Dyslexia, executive functioning, and attention issues are the challenges that our two children, that go here, face. We started last year and wish we could have started them here sooner. The perfect fit for both of our kids. They are thriving academically and socially. This will give them the foundation for learning for the rest of their lives. We are so glad that we enrolled them here!

I am writing this review from the perspective of both a staff member and a parent. My son attended Havern School for 7 years, and I have been a staff member for the last 7 years. Havern School specializes in the education of children with learning disabilities of all types. The student to staff ratio is 4:1, making the classes small and ensuring that each child gets the attention he/she needs. The weekly curriculum includes speech and language therapy and occupational therapy integrated into the school day, so that parents do not have to spend time after school running to therapy appointments. Each child receives the appropriate amount of therapy, determined by testing at the beginning of the school year. Each student also receives daily, intensive instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics, based on his/her needs. But Havern curriculum does not stop there - students also receive instruction in science, history, the use of computers, keyboarding, music, art, drama, and library skills. There is no better place for a student with a learning disability (grades K-8) than Havern School, in my opinion both as staff and former parent.

Havern has been a wonderful choice for our daughter. The school is small, customized to fit the child and attentive to their unique needs. All activities are intentional and planned to compliment the growth of the children. It's set in a beautiful hilltop location that provides peace and quite for the kids to feel safe and comfortable. The staff is engaged, the families are involved. If you have concerns about your child fitting in to the mainstream school system, Havern is a fantastic alternative for academic and personal growth!

An exceptional place for unique individuals to find safe companionship on one of life's greatest adventures - an elementary education! There are many schools, but few that can meet so many different needs in a caring and supportive manner such that our children now look forward to every new challenging day.

Top notch teachers and administration and a learning environment set at "success." What could be better? We are grateful that we found this school three years ago. Our child has responded well to all that Havern has to offer.

Havern is the best at what they do. It's truly a family here. My child is greeted every morning and all of her needs are met with care. My child's entire life changed coming to Havern. Thank you!

We feel like we hit the lottery with Havern! The teachers and administrators are world-class. They have the desire and skills to help children that struggle in a "normal" classroom. We couldn't be happier with our sons progress!

What a blessing! My child has finally found a safe, nurturing environment to learn and thrive. The educators at Havern are teaching her to advocate for herself while reaching her fullest potential. The small-group instruction is exactly what she needed to succeed academically. OT and speech therapy are part of each and every day -- as opposed to the whopping 20 minutes of services she got each week in public school. And socially she has finally found a place where she fits in. As a family, we are making strides at Havern that we never thought were possible!

Havern is an amazing community of learners, teachers, administration, and families, engaged in the process of meeting student needs. Class sizes are small, student-teacher ratio is low, and there are speech/language therapists and occupational therapists on staff. Every teacher works in creative and tested ways to increase student confidence, strengths, and tools for learning. Small group instruction is key. Havern's teachers know how to develop skills in technology, music, art, and academics.

We have two sons with dyslexia. After watching them both struggle to keep up in another private school, we began looking into other options. The day we toured Havern we knew we'd found the right place. Six weeks into their school year, both boys have taken ownership of their education and we've seen their self-esteem blossom. They no longer feel like outsiders because of their learning differences. Havern provides personalized education plans that target each child's specific strengths and challenges without making them feel singled out. The support we've received as parents has been overwhelming. The before/after school programs are immensely helpful, and my kids actually enjoy attending homework club. Because of Havern, homeowork struggles are gone, our children are happier, and we've found peace. We know our boys are finally on the right track for educational and personal success. We could not be more pleased with our experience at this school.

As someone else here says, this school has been life-changing for our son. The personalized instruction, combined with high expectations and high level of total acceptance have made his self-esteem blossom. A child with significant speech/language delays; he sings in the choir! My favorite unexpected perk has been the way the 'big kids' accept and help the little ones; they've all been there.

We moved across the country for Havern, and it was the best move I have made as a parent. I do not say that lightly. As a teacher, with a degree in neurobiology and experience teaching science and special needs children, I am SO grateful for what they provide. Havern provides expertise in complicated learning profiles and the environment and methods that create success. That is a RARE find in today's school systems. My son has gone from shutting down academically, to being a leader in his class. Seeing his smile and sense of accomplishment is such a welcome relief. He is no longer defined by his learning difficulties, rather by his dreams for what's to come.

My son went to Havern Middle School for three years. My wife and I consider ourselves very fortunate that he had that opportunity; Public Schools were a disaster. Not only did Havern lay the foundation for a successful transition into High School, but also the foundation of self-knowledge to accept and work on his disabilities while not being confined by them. Currently he is preparing himself for college - and yes - there are hurdles but he knows they are surmountable.

Life Changing!!... for my daughter and for our family. This is our first year at Havern. In a few short months, it became very clear to me that we had found the right school. We witnessed such a change in her self esteem and her growth as a student. She is finally in a learning environment where she can experience success. The instructors and staff are qualified, dedicated and really understand how to teach my child. This has been our first successful school year, academically and emotionally. My daughter now knows, even with her LD, that she can learn and can succeed.

We have two children that attend Havern and it has made a tremendous difference in their lives and our family. They are both succeeding at learning, social skills and life!!! The staff cares about our children's day from sun-up to sun-down, and provides an abundance of resources when problems do arise. Watching our children learn and thrive is one of many gifts Havern has given us.

For a small specialized school they are extremely unprofessional. The environment is extremely loose. Kids with feet on desks...self paced structured learning.

This school is remarkable! We went to three schools and watched our son struggle at each one. We have never met a team of professionals who have worked harder to make our son succeed. This school matters--from the top down. I have never met a more dedicated principal.

Havern is one of those truly special schools that combines professional excellence with a caring and supportive environment. I chose Havern after looking at 10 LD schools in four states (my family relocated from Egypt to place our son in a LD school). Havern educates the whole child--speech, occupational and social skills therapy is included and integrated into the curriculum! No more piece-meal therapy and running around with a tired child after school to one therapy/tutoring appointment after another! Since attending Havern, my son is thriving. His reading has just gone through the roof and I have never seen him happier or more confident. Havern is a life changing institution that has made our future so much brighter.

Here is an excerpt from my parents' response to my son's progress report: 'We are very impressed and pleased by the good report on (our grandson) from his school. He is doing good work and we know that Havern has provided just the right environment for his growth. Please tell him to keep up the good work and that his grandparents are proud of him. I've never read a more thorough report on a student. The counselor or evaluator did not overlook one facet of our grandson s progress. Every penny being spent on his development is being rewarded in real life. Thank you for sending the evaluation to us. It is comforting to know that our grandson is engaged in such a program and such a helpful social and educational environment.

Havern has been terrific for our daughter. The class size is small, so children with learning disabilities are able to get the individualized attention that they need. The school also integrates speech therapy, occupational therapy, art, music and drama (including an annual school play).

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
