I am currently a student at Avon High School, and would like to share my opinion about this school. I love Avon and sad enough, i love to go to school every morning. I am not an outstanding student to say the least. I carry a 2.9 GPA and although i do not exceed to the highest of expectations, my teachers make it easier to carry out assignments. I am currently playing two sports this year, and although i am not participating in band anymore, the majority of my friends do and love it. If i could recommend any teachers to get they would definitely be Mr. Lee, Mrs. Greenwell (Nebs), and Mr. Tinker. I also hear that Mr. Abrams is extremely good as well.
I am the same person who wrote a post in May 2005, I wish to add a bit more after reflecting a bit more on Avon High. I attend the best liberal arts college in America according to U.S. News and World Report, with half of my class culled from elite private schools(Choate, Exeter, etc). I look back at Avon and it is certainly an elite public high school. The teachers are often quite average yet the top students are exceptional. It is the brilliance of these top students that makes Avon a very special place if one is intellectually motivated. Avon produces exceptional scholar-athletes, I was the XC and hockey captain myself, and Avon does an exceptional job in placing its top kids ay the top schools in the country (Williams, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, MIT, Stanford...). I argue it is the best public high school in CT.
I disagree that Avon is the best school in the state. In fact, it s quite average. I moved here last year, and I was surprised how short Avon High School fell of its outstanding reputation. The school is small, which contributes to the lack of course variety and extracurricular activities. The music department is pitiful. The sports teams are nothing to brag about either. The school administration does an... acceptable job. They make sure that their students graduate one way or another. Whether they help students graduate for the student's sake or for the school's reputation is open for debate.
The students are competive here. I would argue that we have the best school in state, even outdoing most of the local private schools. For the money (your taxes) it far exceeds that of other schools in the area. The community is pritate and upscale, predomatly white (as is the school.)Sports teams are lacking as is the math department but we were ranked highest in state for science and our LA classes are well made and stable. Teachers are the best facet of the school. The younger ones are upbeat and engaging. I highly recomend Mr. Hook, Mr. Curtis, and Mr. Quigly.
Academically this school provides more then you need and has a wide variety of music, sprots, and extracurricular activities.
What a buccolic setting. All the children are above average, even the Goths who hang out in the grocery store parking lot on weekends. Very competitive classes provide excellent preparation for future megalomaniacs and insurance executives. Plus, the new renovation makes it look like a muffler factory. What could be better? The Bauhaus movement was a mistake: deal with it. Still Abercrombi and Filch is on tiny tees everywhere, making this the place for my organic accessories - I mean kids.
When we moved to Avon we thought about sending our children to private school, but one day while driving we discovered there was a high school, where children could go for free! also the school food is better then our own, my children like it alot. AHS is a great place for everyone, in fact we spend our weekends there! AHS would be perfect if they just completed the needed renovations to make the place the new Mecca for public education. In conclusion AHS is great, except the principal who on a scale from one to ten I would rate a not so great.
My child loves this school. It has provided her with a challenging work load that will prepare her for college. I think that this school has given her the skills needed to survive in the real world.
What a great place... Fantastic and creative faculty who challenge kids of all levels to do their best. School leadership is somewhat young and inexperienced---without a forward vision. Former students say they were well prepared for college.
The high school has a small intimate community where each student knows one another and looks out for each other, creating a safe atmosphere. The English and science deptartments are excellent and we are considered to have one of the best French programs in the state. The math department is not as strong as it's other curriculums though. The school works its students to achieve their best results, and students are very competitive about high grade averages.
