Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

- I graduated Central High School in 2008 & what i can say from my experience is that i loved my graduating class & they teachers i had to the extent that I now work for the Aspira Club, an after school program at CHS. Although I understand everyone's concerns & complaints but what we all must realize is that a GREAT education & a GREAT attitude begins at home. If the students do not have the proper discipline & push from their parents how are they going to expect them to do better in life. These students who do drugs, commit crimes are not 100% of the time to blame. The parents & other adult influences are as well. Teachers are there to do their jobs but when they have to teach insubordinate students what can they do when there's nothing else to do ?

I graduated from the Magnet program in 2007 and as a former student I can honestly say that the only good thing about Central High School is the "Magnet" program which includes the staff. On the other hand, if your child is not in the "Magnet" program, don't bother sending your child there. I had a step brother who attended regular Central, and it is very evident that we both received different levels and quality of education. The staff for regular Central is also very different, in actuality it is just a job to them where they could care less about your kids. In particular, the academic school counselor, Mrs. Connie Doughertry and Principle Engelson are the worse people you can contact as parents if a situation arises in regards of your child's well-being within the school. These two individuals in particular will talk to you and completely disregard your concerns as a parent or guardian.

If you look at the reviews they are all in central magnet that is why their reviews are so good. Central is overcrowded, the security guards play with the students instead of doing their jobs and it is very hard to get an education there when there are so many disruptions in the classrooms (fights, people not listening to the teacher). It is very sad that these kids can't get a great education. The teachers are so involved in trying to keep the kids in line that they don't have time to teach what they are supposed to. I spent 4 years there & can honestly say that I learned very little in that time. I would never send a kid to central or to the other 2 public high schools in bpt. They will not learn anything and I have 4 children that will not go to high school in bpt.

School is the pioneer in Magnet School Programs for the city of Bpt. Staff is excellent (admin, teachers, security). School is expanding with construction. One the schools that particpates in Aqua Program. My child is doing fine academically and athletically. Recommend this public school highly.

My son is in the Central Magnet program and the teachers have been fantastic. They are very understanding and supportive, available to the students before, during and after school. The Magnet advisors are also very supportive and will work with parents and students.

I am currently in the 11th grade at Central High School Magnet. I feel that Central has made great improvements as far as safety goes. When I started school there 2 years ago there was no such thing as a school id cards and such strict rules such as not being allowed to use your cell phone in school or getting in trouble for being in the wrong lunch wave. Now with the new principal I believe that central has become a more safe environment. However yes there are fights from time to time but what school does not have issues as this. When you have so many kids in a very small school what do u expect? When I started school at Central Magnet I new about 1 or 2 people now I know all of my graduating class and some. Joining clubs and sports is another good way to make friends. If you hang with positive people at central you should have no problem however if you hang with people who are up to no good of course your experience is not going to be a good one. Central has many classes to choose from and some of the teachers are good. Yes there are few ones that may get on your nervous from time to time but most of the teachers are willing to help you in magnet (not to sure about regular central). The magnet program is way more of challenge then regular central and prepares you for college. I do not believe central is out of control as the comment says below me. Central Magnet is a great place to send your child to with out question.

I think central needs a new principal and new staff how can kids learn when half the teachers are never there..I think this school is out of control. And I think it needs to be run correctly.A angry parent

I am currently a student at Central High School. I have just completed two years there and now I will be heading into the 11th grade. When first arriving at Central, I thought that the school was going to be a chaoic enviornment. But after attending the school for the past two years, I was truely mistaken. Central High School is a wonder school. It offers diversity and allows a child's 'people skills' to develope. This is not a sheltered school, so you child will learn to be independt quick. Though the school has its problems, there are also many positive aspects that override the negative. I am enrolled in the magnet problem and I must admit that, the program is much more difficult than the regular central courses. It offers complex courses and challenges you to push yourself. Central is a great school to send you child to!

Central High School is the best high school in Bridgeport CT. That doesn't say much in comparison to the other high schools in the area, but its magnet program is real preparation for top tier college life. It also features advanced placement classes for students who are college bound. It offers real challenges for students and it can certainly be compared to some of the more affluent towns in the area surround Bridgeport in the level of education it provides. As a graduate of Central's Magnet program,I speak from experience. I went on to college and I am now enrolled in graduate school.

i am a junior in the central high school magnet program and i think that our school is great. Yes there are many things that have been improved, but since my first year at Central, i have seen a big differences. Yes central is overcrowded, but that's because its a good school. I havent had any problems with the schoo, and where ever i go i can proudly say ' i go to Central' Yes, there are fights, but there are fights every where. Take it from me: if you want your child to have a good experience in high school, this is the place to send them. They offer AP classes as by Junior Year, which give you college credits, while other schools dont. We have great exctra curricular activities. The teachers couldnt be more helpful. Take it from a student, not a parent. They arent the ones there all day.

I've had personal experiences with Central High which has left a bad taste in my mouth since then. I went in at the beginning of school met all her teachers and administrater gave them all our phone numbers, told them to call me anytime for any reason I was availabe, my child started to skip classes and I was the one going into that school telling them she wasn't going to her classes. It should have been the other way around. I received no help from security because they were too busy socializing with the students. There was only a handful of teachers that care, that is sad. I had to take her out of school and send her to Illinois to finish high school. Now my son has to attend this school and it breaks my heart.I hope it has gotten better.I doubt it very much.

Central has approx. 2500 students. They have both a regular public school program and a magnet program. I prefer the magnet program where children have more opportunity and access to specialized programs including business & arts. They are also allowed to complete college courses in their senior year. I find the school is overcrowded.

Central is the best high school in the district. The Magnet program surpasses many of the private and more affluent public schools in the surrounding suburbs.

i think thaT CENTRAL is a very good school and i also think that the budgets should'nt be cut because you konw what? the kids deserve all the activities they can get to stay off the streets and be the change in the world they wish to see and as far as the security guards they are friendly and they all do their jobs. and thats all thank you. GO CENTRAL.

I am a student at central (sophmore) and since i have been there it has been soo horrible. The school itself is falling apart. The ceilings drip, the desks are broke, and there isnt anything to keep the students interested in school. To put it nicely this school is the worst and this is coming from one of its now enrolled students. Iam disgusted, truly.

My daughter is in the 9th grade at Central Magnet. She's an honor student(since 1st grade)and chose to go to Central instead of Trumbull High. So far she has not had any problems there. I havent had to deal with administration so I dont know what they are like. I can say that the teachers she has this year have been very good to her and the quality of work she gets is very high. Hopefully I can continue saying this for the next three years. Can there be some more control of the hallways and cafe? Yes. I think that the security gaurds try to be friends with the kids instead of trying to take care of necessary situations around the school. Which in turn takes away from their authority with the kids.

Central is a excellent school. My son is now graduating from college with a 3.5 gpa and Central's loving and insightful environment have a lot to do with his success, according to him. I know that sometimes larger cities get a bad wrap but Central's wonderful educators are working really hard to make each and every student feel special. When my son was younger he wonder if he would ever leave 'factory city' and become something, and I feel as if he has already. With the proper guidance the youth of Bridgeport can do wonderful things but they need teaches that believe that their in their abilities. They need educator that want to see their minds grow and their sprits expand, just like a flower out of concrete. ' It is one thing to born it to poverty, but is another to not be encourage to rise out of it'.

This year in 2005 there has been 1 fight. The kids test scores have been the best in bpt history. They have also beat the catholic high schools such as Nortre Dame and St.Joseph.

central is a very good school however, the principal no incharge has no control over the school. He shows favortisim in his punishment. The school is over populated and the seecurity gaurds are not doing their job. They sit around and idle, were they are supposed to be they are not. In other words while dr,or is incharge the scool is not safe, unless he takes some serious action. Besides this central is a very good school. the education is wonderful, it just needs some more activites. things to keep the children occuppied.

Central is a great school... The staff is really caring and the teachers do their jobs really well... the principal is a great person and he and the assistant principals are always there if you need someone to talk to... security guards at Central are also there if you need someone to talk to and feel that you can't talk to the principals or the guidance... Also, Central has a lot of great teachers who are willing to work with their students after school if they have to... Despite Central's bad rep, all in all, it's a good school
