I was surprised to find this site with comments last posted in 2009. Our son graduates this year from Guilford High and I cannot say enough positive things about the quAlity of this school's academic programming, teaching, administrative leadership. Just look at the college placements for graduating seniors and you will get some insight into the quality of the school.
GHS is a great school. There are some issues requiring attention, however. The main one being that it needs expansion. This, of course, requires funds of which the district and voters are responsible. Without the involvement of all concerned it may take many more years to accomplish this. I also think there should be a modesty dress code. Some of the clothing I have seen the kids wear to school is horrible and distasteful.
As a former student the school physically is falling apart! Classes choices are very thin without many electives. The music program is very good, but the new administration has taken away many of the responsibilities high school students should be learning so that College isn't a complete culture shock. The teachers are not that bad.
The new administration has made changes to the schedules, but we had hoped for improvements. Unfortunately, it turns out that my son's backpack is now 50% heavier, the books are still filled with pictures (dumb it down), and one of the 'thought problems' in the math book refers to a 'future' event that is planned for 1998! There are too many kids in the lunch line, so some kids still do without lunch - in prior years that was understood, and the kids were allowed to snack in classes, but no more! All-in-all for 2008: many changes, but few improvements! How can this be so difficult to do?
There are barely any elective classes. But the classes go at a fast pace which i love. The new schedule is confusing and hard
GHS has great music programs and a new principal has much improved the appearance and cleanliness of the school. The dress code is also being enforced. The school is in dire need of a complete renovation.
We are very disappointed in the Guilford HS. Very little discipline and consequently the school atmosphere is a 'free for all' Parents are discouraged from being involved. If your child is a self motivator and independent learner, they will do fine, but the rest, and the majority are left to 'fend for themselves'. The AP offerings for a school of this supposed caliber is appalling.
Guilford High School has one of the most successful academic programs in the state of Connecticut. Guilford is a very affluent area, and the majority of the students are very determined and end up at great colleges. I have been to many schools in my lifetime and I have never been to a school with so much trust within the student body and so much success from the students. It is by no means easy to acheieve good grades, and most of the students do atleast 3 hours of homework a night. There is a lot of pressure to do well in the school, but the students that try their best will succeed at GHS. The sports are very strong along with many extraciricular activies.
We love our school. We have dozens of clubs and one of the best music programs in the state.
GHS is a good public school, but needs improvement. The select few are treat differently. The school is really lacking dicipline and structure. That is what is exactly needs, and the present administration does not instil that. It was honestly like a zoo last year. However I felt many of the teachers were great, and really do care about their students. The facility does need some improvements, and there needs to be more parents involved. If put you put in the effort to GHS you will reap the rewards though.
