Once considered one of the best HS in CT, Pomperaug has been headed downhill for several years now. When our eldest son graduated in 2002 it was still a top public education venue, but you will find many parents of the current students complaining about: indifferent teachers, ongoing drug problems, poor resources. Much of this is likely due to the ongoing budget struggles with Middlebury (whose residents constantly wish to reduce taxes at the school's expense), but some of it is a product of administration. Southbury schools are excellent through the Middle School levels, but more and more parents in what is predominantly a high-income, white collar town are opting to send their children to private institutions nearby -- myself included.

I had a great experience at Pomperaug Elementary School from 2002 to 2008. It was a positive atmosphere with great teachers, students and classes. This school did a good job preparing their students for middle school. The students learned and excelled in academic and related arts classes. The kids are nice and develop strong friendships with others. The teachers made the classes fun and enjoyable. The only negative thing was that some rules were not to keep the kids safe but to keep them from having fun. Also you are treated like a little kid who is incapable of doing anything themselves. For example even as a 5th grader you were walked to your related art classes and cafeteria by a teacher in a single file line, and reminded every minute to be quiet throughout the halls. Also the kids weren't allowed to run on the playscape. Overall I met alot of friends and had a lot of good experiences that I remember to this day.

Pomperaug Elementary School is one of the finest schools you will ever have the privilege of being associated with. My late son was profoundly disabled and spent many years as part of the Pomperaug family while in the special ed. program. From the front office staff and principal to the nurses, therapists, teacher's aids and of course the most conscientious teachers you will ever encounter Pomperaug Elementary was a true blessing to our sons and our family.

The staff at this school go above and beyond for their students. I am grateful to have my children in this school.
