Kuumba Academy Charter School

Although my daughter is graduating this year, Kuumba Academy Charter School has proven to have deserved the Academic Excellence Award in the State of Delaware. There students perform above and beyond the normal standards of other children in public schools. I would recommend this school for all children in grades K-5.

As a parent who had one child graduate from there, and now one child in the 4th grade who has been there 3 years, this school more than likely the best primary school in Wilmington. The State Ed Dept. has declared Kuumba as 'superior' according to the DSTP scores in 2007/8. It is the only art-centered school in Delaware where each child takes 5 different 'special' classes each week. It is one of few schools in Delaware that is apart of the Vision 2015 (a collaborative effort by education, government, business and civic leaders throughout Delaware). Kuumba is one of the few schools in the country to implement in 2008 the innovative Singapore Math system which has proven to elevate students in math scores. My child is currently enrolled at Kuumba. He will be attending the second grade in the fall. I love this school and highly recommend it to anyone who has an elementary aged student! They have wonderful extra curricular activities for the students. Also, they are an excellent academic school!

Kuumba is a great school so far my children have been there for 2 years and I am very pleased with what they have learned so far and the teachers are very patient. Keep up the good work Kuumba.

My daughter attended fifth grade at Kuumba Academy. She had a fabulous experience academically, socially, and in supporting her developing racial identity. Kuumba Academy's mission supports children of color in developing strong positive self-images which they otherwise may not always achieve due to continuing negative societal influences. Using the Kwaanza principles as a foundation, and with integration of the arts into the academic curriculum, the school environment is very nurturing of kids with varying abilities. Class sizes are small (13 in her fifth grade class!), allowing lots of individual attention. As the European-american mother of a biracial daughter, I welcomed this opportunity for her to be immersed in a part of her heritage that I cannot provide her out of my own experience. It was also a learning opportunity for me, to experience being the one in a clear minority and to be whole-heartedly welcomed into the active parent community.

Enrolling my child into Kuumba Academy Charter School is the best thing that I could have done. The school offers a variety of programs including music,art, dance, foreign language and an excellent after school computer class that my child has helped my child immensely. The staff at Kuumba are professional, caring, well equip, and all about the children. Just visit and you will feel the same calm, nurturing, positive vibe I do every day I'm there.
