Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

We transferred into McKitrick this year from an out of state public school. We are shocked everyday at the callous attitude of the teachers, the complete lack of organization and communication, and the almost total lack of extracurricular activities. I'm not sure what people are thinking when they recommend this school. I'm trying to think of something positive to write to offset the negative, but I honestly can't. We'll be pulling our child out after this year.

This school is great on the outside, however some of the staff have zero compassion for the children. If your child needs any extra help in academics, this school is not for them. I am highly disappointed in the way this school operates. Test scores, and image matter more than the children.

I have had three kids come up through this school. The academics are absolutely great. However, more than half the teachers have had extremely poor attitudes. There are a handful of good ones, yet plenty of them seem as though they wish they didn't have to put up with the profession they chose. They are dredging through the day, snapping at kids for anything that they are annoyed by. They have this crazy "check" system for behavior. The kids even get checks for having fun at lunch time, the only time they can actually talk to their friends. One teacher is called the "check queen." Thanka to her, my child no longer enjoys school.

I am surprised by the negative reviews here - are they talking about the same school my kids go to? I found the teachers outstanding - my kids are very happy here, and are always excited to go to school. This is an excellent school for gifted and motivated kids with no behavioral issues. This school is extremely safe, I would say they go overboard on safety. The teachers we have had are very nurturing, caring and always put the interests of the children ahead of everything. I feel extremely fortunate to be in this zip code!

My 5 year old dropped off by the bus driver in the wrong neighborhood and left wandering around on her own for 45 minutes. Nothing was done by the administration except to tell me it was hard to get bus drivers who want to travel so far north and I shouldn't make too big a fuss because it might jeopardize the neighborhood bus stop. I have to agree with the earlier comment- a school has to be safe first.

This is my granddaughter's last year at McKitrick. We both are already missing all the teachers, office workers and Principal. This is an excellent school I will recommended to everybody.

My daughter is finishing First Grade and I just want to say that Mckitrick is an excellent PUBLIC school. High involvement from the parents make a huge difference as it's really hard for the teachers to keep the Class A classification that the school has with 17-20 kids per classroom and NO helper. The facilities are always spotless clean, the staff is courteous and friendly, the afterschool program HOST is well organized and help the kids with their homework. Some parents confuse the fact that because the school is located in a middle-high class neighborhood they have the right to expect Private School education (low teacher-student ratio/ music and sports extra curricular activities/ foreign languages lessons, etc). The teachers dedicate a lot of their spare time to prepare the lessons and activities and I couldn't be more grateful for the education my daughter is receiving.

This school was not a safe place for my children. There are several highly qualified and dedicated teachers. There are also teachers who do not support recess for event the youngest students. The administration lacks proper vetting of it's staff and personal issues are brought into the classroom. Our family personally experienced prejudice because of this and the environment became a particularly threatening, unhappy place for one of my children. The administration choose to support the offending staff member and I choose to pull my children from the school. Before an education can be great, it must be safe.

McKitrick Elementary is a wonderful public school in the hillsborough county district of Florida. As a past Executive Board Member, PTA and 110% achiever, I salute you for doing a great job. My youngest is transitioning to Maritinez this year.

Generally speaking, I like this school - but I do agree with the post that children with special needs receive little attention. What a parent gets most is a resistance for specialized interventions and lots of empty promises that their child's needs will be met. The administration seems bothered by the fact that you even raise the question - and the Principal, although pleasant, does not, at all, take an interest. She simply passes this burden to staffers who are complicit in doing as little as possible.

McKitrick does not provide appropriate support or services to the lower 25% of the students in the school. It is too focused on only the upper 10% of students. In fact, at a recent meeting the Principle stated that the reason McKitrick is no longer an "A" school and is now a "B" school is because the bottorm 25% of the students did not show enough growth. To me that is a glaring sign that the school does not appropriately assist those students that are the ones with the greatest needs.

McKitrick Elementary teachers have VERY high academic and behavior standards. Testing is an issue the STATE has mandated. As a result of their education, all three of my children did very well and were very prepared for a challenging middle school experience. The teachers are professional and over-all wonderful people. Great school!!

With the exception of the Principal this school is very disappointing. I have watched my child, who was pasionate about learning and education, be deflated and intimidated to social compliance. Teachers justified their behaviors and never took ownership in the fact that they could not actively engage a child. I don't know who the 5 star teachers were the others wrote reviews about but I am sure it was not the teachers we had nor the Vice Principal. - Choose a Private School if you want your child to advance.

The school has very high parent participation, a high overall educational standard relative to other local schools, and for the most part it has a very good school spirit. The teachers are fast to label a child , and it seems that many parents are able to influence teachers and areas of the children's education, that should be above any parent's influence. the same children benefit, and it seems to often be at the expense of other children.

AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!! We have been working for two years through school-choice to get into McKitrick and we couldn't be happier! They are more focused on education than anywhere we've been, yet they still have fun! Allison Cline, the principal and Cathy Bishop, the AP are beyond amazing...The administration at our other school cannot even come close to these women! This is where you want your kids!!!

After attending private schools my whole life, I was leary about admitting my child into the public school system, but these schools are so fantastic they can't be beat! My child is attending Kindergarten and I couldn't be happier with the program and especially, the teachers. Every process from child drop-off to the cafeteria to bell work is well thought out and they have the best intentions for the children. My child is a bit advanced in reading as well and their curriculum caters to the varying levels. Way to go, Bobcats! This is such a nice area to live in that feels like a tiny community within Tampa.

Because I found this website so helpful in my school search, I wanted to leave a comment about the school that we found. As I read the commment dated April 28, 2010, I have to wonder which school this person could be talking about. Apparently they do not take their child to school in the morning, because if they did they would see Ms. Cline, the principal, smiling and helping kids out of their cars. Apparently they do not stay around for the adorable TV show done every morning by the 5th graders where one or both Ms. Cline and Ms. Bishop welcome the kids to school that day, tell them about what is happening at school and impart a word of wisdom to the children. Apparently they have never had lunch with their child in the outdoor courtyard, because if they did they would see them regularly being a presence.

The school itself looks great. However the teachers are quick to label a child. The Adminstration office including prinipal and assistant don't seem to be so involved with the children. I have never even seen either one on campus. I did expect more from school however they are just like any other school in the county. The field trips at school are nothing major. I cam name other elementary schools in Tampa Palms that have more exciting trips for children. The extracurricular activities are very low. However the parent involvement in this school is big.

This is still a good school, but I am concerned that it is slipping. I've noticed a decrease in the quality of some instruction and discipline of students. I'd like to see the school's management hold everyone, from teachers to students to cafeteria personnel more accountable. Even so, most at this school genuinely care about providing and getting a good education, I just hope they tighten up the bootstraps so it doesn't get worse.

Fantastic school! PTA has great involement with the parents & teachers. I have had 2 teachers so far and loved them both. Very caring and just top of the line. Don't waste your money on private shool, this is the way to go. These teachers are the best. Not much help for students with ESE or learning disablities. They don't make that an easy process. This is truly a school for the average or gifted child. VP and Principal not eager to make special arrangements, only down fall. Otherwise this is a fantastic school!

Great school, don't be fooled by the below average per student spending as compared to the state. Most of this is because of high parent involvement mixed with the fact most of the kids come from Cheval which I am sure those above average income folks are helping out. This school finished at the top along with Mabry Elementary for the 2008 FCAT in the district.

Excellent parent and teacher involvement and top county test scores. Tangible sense of pride by both teachers and students with a real 'team' spirit. The principal was selected as Florida's 2007 National Distinguished Principal, given to the state's top elementary school principal.

This was my children's first year in a public school. We were very overwhelmed by the overall size of the school at first, but surprised at the individual attention both of our children received. The music program is wonderful, every child has the opportunity to participate. There are many opportunities for parental involvement and several 'carnival' type activities for the family to participate in at the school. The faculty and administration are very 'visable' and easy to talk to if parents have concerns or questions. Overall, we are very happy with the experience at McKitrick, we feel that they took an interest in the education of each child individually.
