I have been teaching at Varela since the school opened in 2000. I don't mean to say it's a perfect school but Varela is definetly one of the best High Schools in Miami. It is a safe, nurturing, and academically challenging learning environment for students. Ms Fins, her administrative team, staff and teachers work very closely and efficiently in order to meet the needs of the students and parents. The activities director is demanding but amazing: all the Varela events, Homecoming dance, Grad Bash, Senior luncheon, Prom have always been top notch and classy. There are wonderful musical events (Coffee night, Battle of the bands, &concerts) and Theater/Broadway productions well worth the $5 entrance. Overall, there is great school spirit. The school buildings and school grounds are very clean. Besides the different magnets, Varela offers dual-enrollment and has one of the best AP programs in the County. Of course, some teachers are better than others and some classes are more interesting than others but overall, this is a great choice for your child's High School education.---an objective teacher with an insider's view

I go to this school and let me tell you.. ITS HORRIBLE! Everything is so grimey and gross. I honestly hate it. When people think of public schools and imagine bad things about them, Varela is a perfect example of that. This school has NO school spirit what so ever and most of the teachers are careless and could care less if you failed. Also they teach very badly! My math teacher barely shows up to class and when she does she shows us youtube videos of someone explaining what to do because she can't even teach. Avoid putting your child here at all costs.

I was apprehensive at first about sending my daughter here. She is our oldest and we didn't know much about the highschools in the area. I will say that we DEFINITELY made the right decision. She is in the I-Prep program and absolutely loves it. The administraion is top notch! I remember sitting at a softball game and the assistant principal knew the majority if not all of the girls on the team. Just shows they really do care.

As a parent of three former I can attest to the quality of instruction at this school. The Veterinary Acadmy is the best in town. My youngest daughter completed her FVMA CVA certification in the program and worked at a veterinary office during her undergraduate studies. She will be attending medical school in the fall. She attributes her success to Ms. Escobar and her love of animals. This lady bent over backwards to help my daughter and all of her students. Mr. Escobar, Mrs. Garneff and principal Ms. Fins were amazing too.

Felix Varela is full of patient, dedicated teachers, who are passionate about their subjects and students. They offer more AP classes than many private schools, have a long and extremely diverse list of electives, and great extracurriculars. I graduated from the school in 2010, and since then, 2 of my younger sisters have attended the school. Because of the hard work of my teachers at Varela, I made it to an Ivy League school. As long as you can take advantage of available resources, this school can take you far.

Unfortunately there lots of unhappy people everywhere, I think the parent that talk bad about their child school or teacher, not doing any favor to their kid and if they feel so bad about their kid being in this school why don t they home school their kids. My child is a student in Varela and love the school. The teachers are fear and yes there lots of home work but that come with the grade. I being in the school a couple of times, the staff and teachers I meet where very professional and helpful.

Unfortunately, I've had to deal with the staff at this school too many times. Ms. Escobar was the worst of all. Not only doesn't she disrespect students who politely apporach her but has the same attitude toward parents. She measures every student with one stick. She doesn't allow you to speak and only sees her point of view. It's a shame we still have teachers of this caliber in our education system. If she can't handle the workload, then she should allow someone else to do her job. I don't need to listen to her rambling about how irresponsible students are.

I am a former student of this school, I graduated in 2006. I came from a private school into Varela and honestly this is a pretty good school it may not be the best but it is pretty high up there compared to all the other high schools in the area. they have AP and honors classes and have many different clubs, so they definitely try and make opportunities happen for those students who try.

Anyone who writes a poor review on this school is out of their mind. The Principal Mrs. Fins has been extremely helpful and my children are facinated with their magnet programs. The school is clean and the staff member are warm and welcoming. My children are getting a rigorous curriculum and are being challenged. The Vet Science and IPREP magnet teachers are fantastic. If your child is gifted this is the place for them to be.

I feel bad for my children. They are on a waiting for Florida Christian, turn ASTRAY from this school. I brought them in for freshman year since they are in a waiting list in FCS. I have one son, and two daughters they all three have been bullied in that school. I do not understand why. I have very good looking children and now they have become different people that I do not even recognize. They have become depressed and my daughter's have been bullied. Surprisingly my son has been able to avoid problems. It seems that if you have good looking children they will be unsocially accepted and be bullied even online. I have contacted the school and they act as if bullying is not an issue on my children. I have called on several occasions and they do not have time to make a meeting with me and talk about this issue. My children have come out possitive on drug tests from people smoking weed in the bathroom. They have not learned anything I am sad to say this has stressed me and all of my children out. My child got kicked out of class for talking about Jesus. I think this is enough said why you should never put your children here.

The school overall is a pretty good school. I can not say much for regular or remedial courses, but most of the AP courses are absolutely wonderful, the teachers really know what they are teaching and as a student that makes all the difference. The theatre department is over looked by many who attend the school and many middle school students deciding where to go concerning theatre departments. There are two extraordinary teachers who deal with the drama department each with qualities and talents to balance each other out. Both are well rounded in technical theatre (lights, sound, set), improvisation, and acting. Professionalism in the theatre is instilled in each student who participates. In regards to a previous comment, students involved in drama club are by all means welcome to participate in productions providing they audition or sign up for crew and attend rehearsals and do their jobs. The Thespian Troupe at Varela does very well at district and state competitions, the troupe has received a good number of Critic's Choices for categories such as pantomime, solo musical, student directed scenes, sound design, etc. To sum it up, Varela is a great school especially for theatre.

This is a great school! The teachers are always willing to help and the school itself is clean and now with the new assistant principal, the students are more disciplined. The veterinary magnet program is the BEST there is. Nowhere else will you find such a great career experience!

This school is probably the best for my children and maybe for yours. Teachers are helpful and the students are great and funny. The school is so high spirited. They come up with great ways to collect money for people in need. Also the academies are great too. Especially J.R.O.T.C and vereteran science.

I really like his school. All the teachers are nice and so are the people that go here. Even though this school is a 'C' school you still notice not to judge your child on the Fcat scores the school recieves. Im an honors gifted student and the gifted department is filled with amazing fun teachers.

Felix Varela is a wonderful school with fantastic teachers and a great administration. Of all the programs offered, my favorite is the Veterinary Tech Magnet Program run by Ms. Y. Escobar, a truly dedicated professional. They actually have a kennel on site where they care for unwanted and abandoned animals. The program offers students a great deal educationally, morally, and ethically. After all, what could be greater the helping the innocent in need on a daily basis!

The quality of education at this school is below average. I had enough of the daily fights and bullying and pulled my son out of this place. I did put my child at Sunset where he went on to earn a full scholarship to the University of Florida.

This school is a terrific school. The sports program is always on top, as well as the acedemics, the teachers do everything they can to make sure we get the best education. I transfered here after my freshmen year bc of my old schools problem when it came to drugs and fights.I am an incoming senior and i have not seen any drugs and rarely any fight bc the staff is always alert. I can honestly say that it was worth the transfer i live 30 min away but it is all worth it.

My twin daughters were in the graduating class of 07. Varela was like a second family for all of us. The staff is excellent and very attentive. The athletic program is great! Although it is a very crowded school my kids had an overall excellent high school experience, that included sports, clubs, community services, ap academics, etc. And never felt like another number. They were prepared for what they encountered when they got to college and left there with the feeling that they fully enjoyed what was probably the best times of their lives! no complaints at all.

The current principal does not interact with the students and parents like the previous principal. It is important for all teachers to be proficient in the English language to communicate effectively with students who do not speak Spanish.

My daughter transferred to Varela because she wanted to take 3rd year Japanese and her home school didn't offer it. Overall, I am pleased with the school, but it bothers me that the freshmen and sophomores have only one elective because of the 'Freshman Experience'class. That has not permitted her to take Drama, which is something she is really good at. She has joined the Drama Club, but they don't really let the people who don't take Drama class participate. That has been disappointing, to say the least. The staff at Varela are really great. I volunteer there and they are amazing! I met a man who told me the Drama program there is really wonderful! It's too bad she can't be in it. During sophomore year, they will also only get one elective. It's too bad the teacher voted against the four class schedule.

As a alumni of Varela, Class of 2006, I was proud to call that building my second home for the 4 years I was there. The administration and staff helped prepare me for what was to lie ahead and taught me more than what the textbooks could offer. The honors program and AP classes that they offer are terrific, and the 50+ clubs as well as the varsity and jr. varsity sports were a lot of fun. I would thoroughly recommend Varela to anyone looking to study and come-of-age in a diverse and stimulating environment. -Katie DeLuca Class of 2006 VP

I think on the whole my child has had excellent teachers the whole four yrs she has been at Varela. It is unfortunate that the school is so big for my child is one that is lost in the shuffle. On the whole, the administration is good esp. Mr. Nunez and Ms Gallor. They always get back to us when we have asked questions. On the whole, it is a good school for the times. My child until this year has chosen not to make it the best experiene but she could have and is realizing it now.

My son has been in this school now for 2 years and I am very dissapointed in the lack of quality of teachers. The turnaround of teachers is high. One class alone he had 3 different teachers for one class alone. This will be his last year there.. I can say the prinicipal has been the only person I can say is a positive example in the school.

Varela High Seems to offer an adequate education, my daughter has had no problems with any of the students and teachers and she is content with her surroundings. Class size is still a problem, and as with any Public School there are some discipline issues. Overall, OK, maybe a B-.

September 07, 2005
The quality of the current academic programs is completely insufficient. Students are lacking in grades and interest in school now, only due to the fact that now school has been lacking in availability itself. Availability of interesting extracurricular activities that is. Students have grown bored of school and its boring nature. Dealing with this for 180 days every school year has turned our young children of today, into the zombies of tomorrow.

Overall, Felix Varela Senior High is in my opinion rated as a 'B' school. They constantly focus on FCAT, and make sure that we do well in that department. Their sports acadamies are excellent, and arts are good as well.

My daughter has attended here for 3 years. Although she has failed numerous classes, I have never received a single phone call from any teacher. Those I have attempted to contact rarely call back. She has yet to pass the FCAT, yet this year (her junior year) was the first time anyone has bothered to implement any kind of plan to help her and contacted me regarding it. Teachers just don't care for the most part. If you aren't the 'norm' forget getting any kind of help.

The computer site of 'Parent Link' has been down for quite a while. It was the best way to check grades. The school web site at Varela HS is pitiful. It is not kept up with activities and does not give current information except sometimes for the monthly calendar that we already got from the office. That is not enough for a web site. It is 2004 and the web site should be much better, informative and current. There must be someone or some students who can help with this but they don't seem to care. As a parent I like to be informed and in HS it is difficult. Therefore I would like to depend on an informative HS website. As a HS, we need to get more help with college information. More 'CAP' counselors are needed especially after school. With so many students, one CAP counselor does not seem sufficient.
