Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

We transferred to Palmetto from a private school in our old neighborhood because of the reputation. Yes, parents seem to be involved but that is about it. We originally thought the school was disorganized and that communication was poor. We thought to give it a chance but yesterdays open house was a disaster. Teachers had zero preparation, did not know the curriculum, communicated nothing about our children, are not trained in classroom technology and did not know the room mom's name (who seems to be the only good thing) and made sarcastic remarks about programs encouraging parent involvement during lunch and boy do we miss recess. Yes, we are disappointed. We hope to see improvements as the school year evolves but are not ruling out a change of school for next year. On a positive note, our child enjoys this school.

THIS IS AN AWESOME SCHOOL. My children are involved with the many drama and arts programs including band and chorus. The school also offers orchestra and cheerleading. We are very happy with the PTA and its involvement in supplementing the programs and teachers. The teachers are also very dedicated and the principal has been a good leader. The school is focused on reading and the joy of the kids who go over the Rainbow, or who have perfect attendance or birthdays is tremendous. It is a community school and we have never wanted to go to the other school close by that has a "higher" rating. This school is smaller and we believe better than other schools, especially since the kids in the school are also in the community. My children have made lots of friends and are involved in many activities after-school as well. There is a sense of working together and we really appreciate the school and its administration.

I just withdrew my son from this school. along with 2 more kids in his class. Palmetto is great if you get the "right" teacher. We unfortunately did not. we left to another school after being in Palmetto for 2 yrs it was sad to leave but we had to. it was getting to stressful. The teachers we had for 1 and 2nd grade were not good teachers and the next teacher didn't care to teach so we left and 2 kids followed suit. no one listened to us teacher, principal no one. Good luck to all of you.

My daughter attends the ESE Program at Palmetto Elementary as she suffers from hyperactivity. As such, I expected the teachers and staff to care for the well being and safety of the students in the program. However, my daughter has been bullied by classmates (both verbally and physically). I have complained numerous times but instead of dealing with the situation, the school has turned a blind eye and the bullying continues. The issue has gotten to the point where my daughter had to verbally defend herself from her attackers and she was written up for her actions (But her attackers were not). The staff needs to do a much better job in making sure the students (especially in the ESE Program), are under control. As a parent, I am fearful for the well being of my daughter. I cannot comment on the regular school and attention provided by teachers and staff members, but as it relates to the ESE Program the school gets a failing grade from this parent.

If your child is within the ASD & moving from Special Ed.& into a Gen Ed class this is not the school, they lack specialized teachers who know how to deal with any type of autism spectrum disorders they are ok on the other disabilities only because they are visible & kids can see the difference not the same within the autism spectrum disorder, since they are just as any other kid, except for minor issues. Parents play a big role here, always donating time & supplies as well as collecting funds for the school. Office personnel aren't friendly. Security is excellent. Academics are ok. The Spanish class is too crowded.

I have two children in the VPK program at Palmetto Elementary, and am very impressed with everyone I have met there. Their teacher is awesome, and the children love to go to school. The other kids are great, and the parents are wonderful. All of the staff members at the school have been great to work with. We have absolutely no complaints, and look forward to staying there.

I had 2 children at leewood. the process of learning was stressed by the princple and staff. in the early years my children were taught how to learn. the early training has made it much easier for the kids to continue that process, of learning, throughout their path of higher education. music and art were part of all 6 years of the kids learning at school. their was also foreign languages and of course recess which was more organized excersice with a bit of free play throw in. parent involvement was extremely high and their were many fundraising programs to aid the kids learning

Every year I think my daughter has the best teacher she can possibly get, and then a new year starts and she gets an even better one. The tremendous parent involvement really allows for the school growth.

Just one parent's viewpoint - underwhelming. Palmetto has coasted on a good reputation for several years but may not live up to its own public relations. Students expected to learn and have fun, definitely a good neighborhood school if you live down the street, but it 'aspires to mediocrity' to borrow a term the media has recently used when critiquing public schools. Expectations are not very high, weak enforcement of rules. Children are not required to wear a school uniform (although the school has a mandatory uniform policy which allows for many different options) - what does this teach students? Certainly it's an above average school for Miami and Florida. I attribute this to affluence of the neighborhood and families rather than school excellence. It's not hard to be an A-rated school with affluent involved parents and few underprivileged or minority students. Plus most have attended preschool and have head start.

The neighborhood is great, which usually means that the school population and their parents are also great. The have better resources, more involved parents throughout the grade levels, and the test score are usually in the top of the county. Gives a great start in the academic career of a child. The teachers are always very helpful, and call me, not just with bad news, but with good as well.

What a truly gratifying experience it has been for our family to be involved in this school. We are grateful for the qualified teachers on staff, as well as the quality of the art, music and media centers on campus. And the importance of safety for our children is truly evident. Security staff is always visible and the crossing guards take their jobs very seriously. Our strong parental involvement is what sets our school apart from others in the area. Our children enjoy the curriculum and have had many great experiences throughout their elementary years. Cyndi Eisenberg Parent of 2 students

The school offers students a wide variety of acitvities. However, there seems to be a lack of consistency between the classes. The teachers seem to focus on different things and there apepars to be no common minimum syllabus for all class sections.
