Let's call Murray Middle School what it really is: a segregated school. There are two populations here: The Cambridge/Arts group and the mainstream. You can guess which group is 95% white and which one is mostly minorities. The school administration and teachers go to great lengths to isolate and 'protect' the Cambridge/Arts kids, most of whom are out of zone and would not be there otherwise. The kids on the mainstream halls are largely left to fend for themselves from the typical ills of an inner-city low income school. As a parent, you may be perfectly fine with this arrangement, especially if your child is in the 'right group.' Personally, I find this to be an unhealthy setup which breeds class struggles unnecessarily.
Murray is amazing. My son is in the Cambridge program and his teachers, staff and the principal are all fantastic. Any reviews saying that Murray is in a "dangerous" part of town are completely blown out of proportion and may, sadly, have to do with the fact that Murray has a pretty even mix of black and white children. Also, Has anyone noticed all of the Sheriffs in St. Augustine? They are at EVERY school. I feel that my son is completely safe and thriving at Murray. I wouldn't choose another school for him. Perhaps those that don't like it need to send their children to one of those segregated private schools. Yuk!
This school is in the worst area of town, and the most dangerous. Murray is only good if your child is in a gifted program, or Avid. The Dean needs to be replaced with someone who can bring discipline and order to the students. These kids need a firmer hand. The P.E department is horrible. I have nothing good to say about this school.
I am glad that there is a school like R J Murray Middle here in St. Johns County. The Gifted faculty is wonderful and I couldn't imagine my son going anywhere else. He is in the 6th grade this year and making his way through the transition. I am very impressed with the SJCCA program as well. No wonder this school is an 'A' school!
i am in seventh greade at murray middle school i only have one down fall about this school the guidance system it lacks organization and GUIDANCE!! at that but over all this scool is OK it offers great electives. And the teachers go out of their way to help the students i would recomend this school to anybody that is ART savy.
I'm not a parent but a student that went there for three years. I'm going to high school in august. I love Murray!!! I think it is the best middle school in the district.. the teachers pay a lot of attention to their kids. They have quite a bit of after school activities that will keep you or your kids busy. Parents are pretty much involved. They send newsletters home to keep you updated on things that are going on..... I will miss this school a lot.
Our son has just completed his first year at Murray. He is in the Checkpoint/gifted program. He has enjoyed his year with the GIFTED teachers. As a parent we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of such an innovative program. Our son has learned through emersion. Making castles, science fair, catapults, i movies, to name just a few..... The teachers are all first rate and know their jobs. Thank you for the forward looking attitude to provide all children with the education that they deserve.
Our son was in the Gifted program 2002-2005. There were 4 teachers on the hall. Two of the teachers are very experienced and good at what they do. One is new and shows promise except that he is influenced by another. The last does not seem to want to be a teacher at all. He called my son names, lost homework, and consistently displayed a cavalier attitude.
