Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My son is a 9th grader and I can't be anymore happy with the school. I wonder how the last comment said its not a good school and the teachers are terrible when its an "A" rated school. I have met all my sons teachers on parent conference night and have communicated with them via Edsby and I can honestly say the teacher have been great and truly care if your child succeeds. The Saturday School Success program is great it allows my son to attend tutoring at the school twice a month from 9-12 to get caught up with any work he needs. I highly recommend this school to anyone GO RAVENS!

I'm in the 9th grade at Alonso High School I hhave worst experience ever it's not a good school. The student are disruptive and terrible and the teachers are bad I haven't learn anything. The school is not welcoming at all, the guidence counselor doesn't do anything if you have a personal problem with a class. This school is terrible in my words, I don't have joy in going to school anymore I'm always mad and frustrated when I have to wake up and go to this school. I constently want to go to sickles high school cause I feel like more of careful school. Mr. Schider is always stating argument with kids and is the mean and disrespectful person that works at the school. I hope you see my review cause this is the TRUTH!!

I have a child going into 12th grade and another transitioning from Middle School. My sons friends have been able to pick up their schedules for the year from school. Just driven up, asked and been handing them, at various, random times. I visited the school and was told that I couldn't have them, they are not printed, being changed and will be given out tomorrow at open house. I already explained my kids are 8 hours away, I work long distance and cannot be at the open house. Knowing that others already got their schedules just by randomly showing up at the school, this was unacceptable. No-one was waiting, how long would it have taken? I explained that other parents have theirs. I was then told that yes, they had been given out at various times. I was refused the schedules. Disappointing that kids needs are not a concern here. The first day at a new school needn't be this stressful.. My oldest has special needs that require a 504 plan. My youngest is making the transition to High School from Middle School. Having their schedules would have eased a lot of stress for them. I am not impressed at all and am reconsidering my school options going forward.

I think that, out of all the high-schools in Hillsborough County, Alonso is the best! The teachers are actually helpful and you see everyone get along!

To all those parents who voice negative opinions about Alonso High School, I wonder how involved you are with the school or do you even have a student at this school? I volunteer at the school and wonder why more parents don't take the time to be involved. Join the PTSA. Join the Booster Club. There are volunteer opportunities in high school. My teenager choose to attend this high school over several other very good options and has been very successful in academics and sports. The teachers and staff of this school helpful and seem to geniunely care about the students success in high school. I would highly recommend 'A'lonso High School.

The previous comment is a GROSS exaggeration. The key is to be INVOLVED and get to know who your child's teachers are, and if you're not happy - do something about it! The principal Mr Diaz, is a great leader. My son is a junior and has had some AMAZING teachers who have made a HUGE difference in his success in school, including this year. Fights are going to happen, but daily is very misleading. NO school is perfect - including Sickles.

I have a 9th grade son involved with football and honors classes at Alonso HS. We have been impressed so far with the teachers and coaches. I have found that all of his teachers are more than willing to assist with his academic needs and have been timely with returning communication via Edline. The sports programs seem competitive and well coached. The school is very diverse but it seems to work. My son will tell you that he enjoys school and has found friends fairly easily. I'm sure Alonso struggles with issues as all high schools do, but I wish more of the area students would give this school a try before prematurely bailing out on it for private school. They may be wasting their money.

Let's get an up-to-date review, shall we? Sophomore in the year of 11. The past reviews are unrealistic, as if it's either a flawlessly amazing school or a terrible prison for teenagers. It's not amazing but not painful. Not all the kids are sweeter than sugar cookies or more bitter than coffee, some are, but there's a pretty good mix of personalities and types, anyone could find a friend. Most of the teachers are alright, friendly, but some obviously cannot handle a class without shouting. I will not mention a name but one particular teacher got a bad group of kids for a class I was in, and took to yelling at them every single day, denying them going to the bathroom, things like that. Others are a bit too passive, however, saying nothing most of the class. The principal and assistant principals are usually good with big obvious school rule violations, but seem to do little when individuals ask for help. I personally love the school, mainly for the social aspects, but there is always room for improvement.

I have two boys at Alonso and I could not be happier with this school. I have never been impressed with any other public school in Hillsborough County but Alonso is truly an 'A' rated school. From their academic program to their Sports program, it is a fantastic school, My son is on on the Football team and they require a 1 hour study hall before practice to ensure their athletes are on track with their grades. Excellent program! I would recommend Alonso to anyone! Thanks to all the school staff for caring for these students.

The teachers, faculty and leadership (Principal) have treated my daughter with respect. This is my daughters last year (2009) at Alonso High School, she has developed wonderful friendships with many students, faculty members and leaders. As parents, we thank the faculty for preparing our daughter for the next stage in her life. We will visit and continue to volunteer our time to this great program.

To all those parents who have negative views about Alonso High School, I wonder how involved they are with the school? I am a parent who volunteers at the school quite often and I wonder why parents think that once their children are out of elementary do they think their kids don't need their input anymore. I think that what the kids and staff at Alonso bring to their school is an atmosphere where learning is encouraged, not only for college but for life. I have one child who graduated and one who is just starting out and while they both had growing pains the atmosphere at Alonso has and is helping them both to be successful in whatever they choose to be. Oh and by the way, Alonso is also an A school!!

I am currently a Sophomore here at Alonso ('11 babay!) and from my experience here, I've really liked it. The administration can be very strict and quick to jump to jump to conclusions but other than that, the teachers are doing their job to the best of their ability and the student is extremely diverse. Whats great about the student body? Well, lets just say that the teachers aren't the only ones who teach ;). Alonso is a fantastic school, but it does have it's drawbacks. Schedule changes once every nine weeks?? Why? While the admin. can be unorganized often, they still keep everything running.

After talking with other parents about the environment at Alonso. There seems to be an overwhelming problem at this school with bullying. Mainly among female students. I have not talked to one parent that truly believes this is a great school. If the adminisration was doing a wonderful job they would not have allowed this to get so out of hand. This is only one of the problems that I have heard about. I am very disappointed.

In Spring of 2008, Alonso was named in the Top 5 Percent of U.S. High Schools! In a ranking conducted by NewsWeek, Alonso ranks 773 in a list of 1,300 top schools in the nation. Several of the other area high schools did not even make the list - this tells you that Alonso is a great school with an awesome academic program. Check out the article on the NewsWeek website.

This school is terrible. I have not learned a thing in the two years I have attended Alonso. Teachers couldn't care less about the students they are hired to 'educate' and the administration is clueless, rude, and hypocritical. I am ashamed to attend Alonso High School.

I like how this school is run by the administrators but it seems to me that most students dont know how to keep up with all the test. My daughter has 4 test in one day. Maybe its just the required to have that many test or quizzes but it stress the students out. Maybe soon the schools wont be so stressful so that our children can succeed in school.

Alonso High School is a superb school and the best in the county. Not only a great football and soccer team but the teachers push the students to do the very best and it shows. The 2008 graduting seniors will be the largest graduting class in Alonso history since 2001. and the classes of 2009,2010 and 2011 are each bigger and bigger making up a 3000 student body. I would strongly recommand anyone to switch to this school that has a great journalism program, arig. program and vet. program. The only issue is the driver's ed. class.

This school is without a doubt one of the best schools within the Hillsborough county district. Not only does the administration do an excellent job at keeping academics above state standards, but they also house a student body of over 3,000 kids! This is an amazing number and shows that this school for what it has achieved is certainly better than what has been rated and said. With that being said, I would most certainly recommend this school for a higher rating as well as some sort of credit for the great job the administration as well as the students are doing. Onward! And with hope for great years ahead!

I don't understand how anyone could possibly give Alonso a bad rating. For the past four years, Alonso has proven to a school that strives for academic excellence, both in high school and continuing at the college level. The faculty truly cares about each student's well-being and the administration works vigorously to ensure that each student is on the right track. Students are able to choose from a variety of classes that best suit their talents, interests, and academic capabilities. Additionally, Alonso offers many extracurricular activities which allow students to be involved in the school outside of the classroom. Clubs include various honors societies, ROTC, service clubs, a guitar club, anime club, and culture clubs. Alonso sports include touch and flag football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf, soccer, swimming, and wrestling. There is truly something for everyone at Alonso High School! Go Ravens!

As a recent graduate of the 2006 class of Alonso High School, I can only say that this school brings good things. Because I was very involved (and given an equal opportunity to do so)in band, entering the University of South Florida was personally, a smoother transition. As for the overcrowding and testing scores, these are things that are seen in any school. Not picking Alonso would be a mistake because they provide a world of opportunities to their students. Furthermore, Alonso does take pride and consideration in their students. When recent tragedies occured, they provided grief counseling, announcements (which informed us), and also showed rememberance through different student organizations (i.e. students helped the parents, the yearbook staff made a page for them in the Evermore yearbook.)As for athletes, etc, they are given plenty attention when practicing and trying out (from personal experience.)

With the upcoming principal switch some things about are school are yet to be decided. I am currently a senior at alonso. I am enrolled in honors and ap classes. The teaching staff is very good and the school is very nice. The media center has few books however and there is little time allowed to go and check out a book.

I feel the school is too big....It feels more like a college campus than a high school.....The sports program especially baseball is horrible......The coaches dont seem to care about the kids...The kids dont get to warm up and try outs are in 2 to three hours....The school does not seem to be involved in the kids and it might be cause of how large the school is.....

This is my daughter's first year at Alonso, and unlike what I thought, she loves it there. Many clubs and activities to join that will keep kids occupied and stay out of trouble. The staff is very helpful and care about your child. The guidance counslor is superb, and the kids believe it or not, are very nice, unlike what most think. My daughter is in all honors classes, and they provide a very choice of teachers that fit the honors system. She is also in marching band, speech and debate, musical theater and chorus, and she's having a great time in high school so far and we're looking forward to her continued enthusiasum.

It is a good school however it is extremely overcrowded in yet they still seem to be allowing students from other school districts to enroll. Some classes are way over capacity. It is very difficult for the students to move through the halls to get to there next class and forget lunch, the lines are so long. We love the school but they need to work on limiting the number of students that attend.

I love Alonso!! The staff there is so helpful and amazing, they keep me updated on my kid's progress as well as work with me to help my kid reach further goals! The school has a great variety of extra curriculars and all the students are so willing to participate. As Band Booster president, I know that the parents are willing to volunteer and help in anyway possible. Alonso is a great atmosphere and I'd recommend sending your kid there any day! Dr. Bunkin is a great principal who handles her school with the perfect balance of discipline and experience!

In response to the parent review stating that they would not be surprised if Alonso earned a 'D' rating for the school year 2003/04, Alonso received a 'B' rating. That is a higher grade than the year before. The comment about the students running the school...that is not happening. The students would love to run the school (of course, what kid wouldn't?), but Dr. Bunkin is a no nonsense principal and holds them accountable to the rules. She has a great, supportive administration to back her up. The teachers are great-and sure, you will get a couple in any school environment that may not demand as much from their students as the other teachers do. Ask the students-they'll tell you- that in the 4 years the school has been around, Alonso staff/faculty push and expect them to do their very best.

This will be my son's second year at Alonso. Since he has been there he has become a totally different person. He now has ambition and the will to complete school and go onto college. His teachers not only take extra time out for him, but also to call me and let me know where he is at academically. I appauld the staff at Alonso High School for making a difference in a young mans life and showing him that he can achieve any goal he sets for himself.

On the upside of the school, the staff has a lot of hope and ideas and some try very hard to make the school the best that it can be. But on the down side, they are under the illusion they have full control when they don't. I believe they are under-staffed and there are a few teachers who do not demand enough from their students. They let them get by with bare minumums just to get them through the course of the day and out of the classrooms. The students are running the school sad to say. Last year the school's overall grade was a C; I would not be surprised if this year was a D.
