I went to hilsman for 6th and 7th grade. The teachers have no clue what's going on most of the time. There's too many open book tests. Even really smart people get like a 75% on benchmarks! The teachers do not teach us what we need to know! There is allot of bullying going ob and the teachers don't notice! The councilor is very nice and understanong. The principal and assistant principal cannot be taken seriously. The choir, band, and orchestra are exelent. But allot of the 7th grade teachers either give you a 100 for the day for writing your name and others make sure that you get too much work. But some teachers like Mr.Oleva, Mrs.Mirada, Mrs.Zeimann, teach us just right and you can tell it's not just for the pay check.
I have 2 kids in Hilsman and was hesitant to have them go to Hilsman because of what I read here. My kids are thriving there, and have made good friends. Their teachers are interested in them as young adults, treat them with respect and challenge them academically. There are lots of extra curriculars, a fantastic band program and a zero tolerance bullying policy, which is actually enforced, too. Perspective Hilsman parents should take the stuff they read online with a grain of salt--Hilsman has been a great environment for my boys.
I have two children at Hilsman Middle School. I moved them from private school at the beginning of the sixth grade. Both children are in AP classes and are getting a top notch education. The Math and Science classes are more advanced and the teachers more competent than at St. Joseph's Catholic School (which was a wonderful school for elementary level). Hilsman's Math and Academic teams are some of the highest rated in the state. I would recommend to any parent thinking about transitioning from private school into a public one to give Hilsman a look.
Teachers and administration are incredibly supportive. Hilsman has a lot of extracurricular choices... band, clubs, athletics. My son is in the advanced placement classes, and his academics seem challenging, and his national test scores are always high. We are glad that our son is at Hilsman.
The teachers were wonderful. I give high grades to the music department especially Ms Camp who made her enjoy music and is continuing in her new school.
