I have witnessed the atmosphere at Johnson Elementary change in recent years. I've noticed a lot of ineffective, arbitrary rules being enforced concerning many areas. The school went from being a relaxed, happy, caring environment to strict, rigid and un parent friendly. Of course there is an exception to everything and there are great teachers and administrators at Johnson, it just isn't like it used to be. It's full of unnecessary pressures and tensions. For example, my son has always been a good student but is struggling this year, his teachers have been harsh and get easily frustrated instead of gentle and motivating, which is what I expect. The school employs harsh behavior monitors or "talking police" while the kids wait in the gym during pick up and in the lunchroom and if kids actually act like kids and dare to speak to a friend they get yelled at. My son got in trouble today for not looking forward in the gym while waiting to be picked up... give me a break... He's 8, not a robot. Also, they have way too many parties and field trips that parents are not invited to, talk about NOT being parent friendly. The field trips are for little kids at crowded places too!
My son has attended this school for 5 years. He has had no problems until this year with a particular teacher in the 5th grade. She is very boisterous and threatens the students with parent conferences as a tool to supplement her apparent inability to teach. Other parents have had suprisingly similar complaints, even when unprompted. Teachers are gems to our society, however ineffective teachers need to be reprimanded. By the way, my son has made nothing but A's and a few B's since beginning his educational experience.
I believe that anyone would find the staff at Johnson Elementary exceptional. My daughters attend at this school. I have one daughter in 2nd grade and another in Kindergarten. This school is very particular in who they allow to work at this school. The staff truly cares about the children. Everyone from the administration all the way down the line is amazing. I am so thankful that my children are able to attend such a wonderful school with such an uplifting atmosphere.
