Large class sizes, poor security, little or no homework, little input allowed from parents or teachers, low morale... teachers and students... Needed: More funds, progressive leadership, more meaningful involvement from students, teachers and parents...

Per an article in the Hawaii Tribune Herald, dated July 2, 2013, "Pahoa High and Intermediate School leads Big Island schools in the number of cases of serious misconduct committed by students over the last five years. Between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2012, Pahoa students tallied a total of 1,663 Class A and Class B offenses of the state s administrative rules Chapter 19, which governs student misconduct and discipline." - Doesn't sound too good.

My daughter graduated last year with all kinds of honors. The facilities are not new and state of the art, but a good education is there for those who want to go after it. The teachers and admin. tend to take a special interest in those that do and really try to help.

Many teachers there go above and beyond the call of duty and our youth respond. Pahoa HIS sends a high proportion of students to UHH and HCC each year. I really love our youth in Pahoa!

Pahoa High students dont really know the quality that they are given by Maring(Principal) who is dedicated and should be awarded the Dedicated Daggers Award. The teachers 'love' the students as if they were their own.
