I have been a parent for 5 years and I have seen some good times and bad. We are definitely heading in the right directions. There have been many visible changes and the staff and curriculum continues to be strong. The administration is holding the teachers accountable which were touch and go in the past. They are promoting pride in our school and accountability within the student body. The classes are small and the students can get the attention needed. They also have additional help through the Sylvan learning centers. The tuition is affordable. The principle is accessible at all times. They have before/after care for the working families. I stay because the school has improved and I expect that it will only get better. I also stay because it not just a school but a family.
I attended St .Margaret's from 1st-8th grade('76) a long time ago. I've since graduated from several other schools, and look back on my time there with mostly fond memories (kids can be kids, esp. when you are the only white kid in class). Nevertheless, I always loved school, and what it has taught me. I esp. appreciate it now, since my son attends public school in California. What a sorry state public education has become! I was SO blessed to have strong, sacrificing, imigrant parents that put me and my younger sister in this school, despite the tuition for them on Dad' s very low salary (tuition was in the $300's for them- for the whole year!) I look back fondly, and wish the same for its currrent & future students-and since I am currently visiting Chicago, hope they'll let an old alumnus come & visit the old school! -Sophie
St. Margaret of Scotland School had a chance to be a great school. Things have changed this school year. Negative commets that have been said about the teachers are not true. St. Margaret has great teachers that look for the students and they are there to help them in any way. As for the teacher being held accountable for things like lesson plans the has always done lesson plans, and this is not the first time the school has sponsored dress down days to help a cause. The school raise money for cancer, help the cheerleaders and the basketball teams. So of things are not to theschool as some of think. We need to check facts before we speak out of turn. Because we are hurting people.
Hi; I am an existing parent from the old school administration, my children have attended this school for the better part of four years now, I simply love the new principal and all the great changes she has brought to this school, I really feel like my kids will be challenged now, the teachers are being held accountable for things that they should have been doing all along like lesson plans, can you believe that before Ms Garcia, the teacher never did them. The children are sponsoring out of uniform days for the eight grade trip, if anyone would take the time to attend a PTA meeting, or even talk to the students and principal, they all know, so as a parent, you should feel ashamed for claiming you don't know.
I am a teacher at St. Margaret of Scotland and let me tell you, it has gotten better. The school is cleaner and actually smells good. The children aren't roaming the halls like they have done in the past. The new principal has brought new programs, ART, Laser Show and other FREE workshops for students. Are we teaching for the money? People, not in the Catholic Schools. I believe that she cares about me as a teacher and all of the students. She knows majority of the students by name and she has only been here for a little over 7 months. She has started a PTA, where parents can get involved. Please remember that people hate change, especially when it makes people do more work. So please don't listen or believe everything you read. Come out and see what St. Margaret's has to offer you and your child.
I don't understand where the negative remarks are coming from. Give the lady ( the principal) a chance to make change, before we start jumping on her. I have three children in the school and I enjoy the change. I'm on the PTA and I see her vision. Come by and see. Make St. Margaret your new 2nd home away from home. We are trying to make this school one of the best on the south side. Come and SEE!!
I am a grandparent whose children attended St. Margaret and now grandchildren attend the school. What I once loved about the school was the close knit family environment; the former principal was also a graduate of the school and teacher at the school. He and his family had close ties to the school. He also knew every child by name and at the time there were well over 300 students in the school. With the current administration there is no longer a family atmosphere. Also, several incidents have occurred involving students that have been minimized by the current Principal. Many times I have called the school and she was not there and there is no one in charge. My children are all in the 30 s and I hoped my grandchildren would graduate from St. Margaret but they will not return after this school year.
Those of you who may question as to weather or not to send your student to St. Margaret please be advised that there is a new principal on board. So may wonderful changes have come about with the new principal. So far this year s discipline has change 100% for the better. There are actual consequences for issues they may arise unlike the past when there was NO discipline action taken. It has been an adjust for students, parents, and teachers alike but what has changed has been 1000 % for better from the past lacking principal. Please come visit and see the changes from how clean the school is now to how well behaved the students are. So those of you have though of St. Margaret in a negative light in the past please con revisit us!
This is a GREAT school! For those who may not know, the principal is a former alumnus of the school. He completed his Master's at SXU, not too far from the school. Surely he could go elsewhere (CPS)and make much more money (esp. bcz he does coach & teach.) My point is that he CHOOSES to be here. If that doesn't prove his commitment and concern for the children of this school I'm not sure what does. Kids receive individual asstnce. with guidance counseling, even though there is not a true guidance counselor on staff. The teachers help with high school choices and they make sure that the students complete scholarship apps to potentially offset the cost of H.S. A good exp. of this school's caring enrironment is when a sutdent's home caught fire recently (last year too,) the teachers and staff & fellow students all rallied to raise money!
So far, so much better then what I experienced with my child in her CPS school last year. I couldn't believe how much better she has been doing with her reading and other school work. Though things could be better, we have experienced the alternative CPS equivalent and I dare not go back...
I must say the foundation Pre-K-3 at St. Margaret and the daily instructions of the catholic faith is highly commendable. My main concerns at this point of time is upper grade. I've had nothing but headaches and stress this school year. Frankly, do feel a child will not adequately be prepared going into high school. Communication with teachers via Edline was a big disappointing. Many of the teachers I feel no longer have the passion to teach in a loving and caring way (a paycheck). There is a lot of hollering and uncontrolled classrooms. Very understaffed (for example. the principal is coach and religion teacher), so child is subject to what's called busy work or no work. This may very well be lack of resources but ultimately the child pays. Finally, the overall cleaniness of the school is less than desireable.
The Principle and Staff of this establishment has a special gift for care about the future of their students. The Principle takes a special interet in every student indivually. I have two children that has attended, and I have no complaints.
excellent school, lots of parental support, several extended day activities, awesome new gym, great teachers, young staff, great leadership just a wonderful experience for your kid.
