INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This School has its pros and cons.Starting with Pros, the Principal and administration are good and they do their best for the students. Most of the Teachers are really good, My sons Kindergarten teachers were Mrs Jean Rocio and Mrs Valvidia, they were excellent with my son.My younger sons teacher in Preschool Ms Maura was really good and patient with my son.Overall, SJB is a great environment for kids with mostly caring hardworking Teachers. On to the Cons, the Gym is a detached building from the Main school and so the kids have to walk back and forth the main school building with two or one teacher in some cases which could be a security issue. There is No Parking Space attached to the School so Street parking can be a challenge when picking up/dropping off kids. The school is predominantly made up of Hispanic and White families so l think it helps if you were either to feel a sense of belonging there.Other than a few negatives,it's a cute little neighborhood school and we loved being so close to it when we lived there. l appreciate the time we spent with the school but l'm much happier now that we have moved our kids to another school with an Excellent Educational program.

I love this school. More importantly my daughter loves this school. The teachers and staff are incredible. Parents are very involved and the teachers and staff are always accessible. The education my daughter is receiving is top notch. I will highly recommend this school and my daughter will stay here through 8th grade.

The kindergarten team at SJB is top notch! My child is really excelling with the curriculum. It's challenging and engaging. The community of parents are very welcoming and we feel like we are part of a school family. I love the designated teachers for art, music, Spanish, computers and gym. In this high-tech world I appreciate integration of technology in every classroom (promethium boards & iPads). Overall we are very pleased with our choice and our plan is to stay with SJB through 8th grade.

I have 3 children at St. John Berchmans School in Logan Square and I can honestly say it is the greatest school. The Teachers and Staff are so dedicated and make it a point to know all the children and their families. My oldest son was given the opportunity to attend another school which he did for a year and a half, then we brought him back to St. John Berchmans. He is so happy to be back at SJB, It is a safe and nurturing environment. The entire school body is a community, and looks out for every other child and family. I also know that programs like language, gym, art and recess will not be cut out of my child's day due to budget cuts. The curriculum is outstanding I am so thrilled with what my children are learning at at the level that they are learning. They are challanged and really engaged in their studies. The communication from the teachers is consistent and reliable I feel that I always know what they are learning in the classroom and what I should focus on at home. The administration has an open door policy, and the opinions of parents are valued. I am so proud to be a St. John Berchmans Parent.

Opinion: poorly run and disorganized - the leadership capabilities are very questionable. We had deep concerns about safety. Our child no longer attends this school.

The teachers are excellent, but like the first reviewer stated the principal in my opinion is not very caring. True the children learn at a accelerated rate, the teachers are caring and very good with the children. The principal is all about the money sorry to say but that is the observation from other parents as well.

The teachers are doing a good job, but I don't know if that will continue without the nun who will no longer be part of the school. I think there is a leadership problem. The principal or head of school seems to only talk loud and do very little to increase the academic environment. It has been five plus years and she is still one of two unqualified school administrators in the Archdiocese. She has a lot of energy and a personal friendship with the priest. I do not question her Roman Catholic faith. I think she does not have the experience or credentials to run a school. The Terra Nova test scores are below 70% and that is not acceptable. The children deserve better leadership. If the teachers must be certified, then so should the "head of school" who makes promises, but just doesn't deliver.

Not a very strong education base and not very well organized. The teachers are nice, but a ton of disorganization creates a feeling of anonymity.

I love St . John Berchmans it has a cozy warm feeling in the hallways and the dedicated teachers who seem to enjoy teaching young and sometimes restless minds . There is a sense of respect for the multicultural school it is since it it is in a mostly working class neighborhood of Hispanic families . The principal Mrs . Roketenetz is an energetic cheerful woman who seems to remember what it is like to be young and all that entails . Rev . Wayne Watts is a happy role model of what it is to be a pastor to a large flock . With learning there has to be discipline and respect for your fellow students and the children in my daughters 6th grade class seem to really like each other . The curriculum is well rounded with art and science every week . The school has two campuses both kept neat and tidy . They have a very organized way of keeping parents aware of events and fundraising . My husband and I are very happy and grateful for this school .

They hold many large-scale events that reach out to the entire community. And they're committed to social justice and environmental issues to boot. St. John Berchmans has been educating children and young people for over 100 years in the Logan Square Community of Chicago. My son attended St. Johns and now my granddaughter is going to school there. We have a staff of very dedicated faculty who believe in teaching the WHOLE child; academically, socially, physically and spiritually. We have a great curriculum that emphasizes excellence. Our sports programs are competitive and build a strong sense of teamwork! Students are able to discover their hidden talents in our fine arts program. Classes are small making the entire student body one big family. Most of all, students are taught respect for one another as well as a love for God. Anyone interested should come and check out St. Johns. They will leave with a strong sense of wanting their children to be part of this fabulous learning institution. when my granddaughter started there in PreK she was an overactive, undisciplined child. Because of the 'structure' and love given to her at St. John Berchmans she is now blossoming in the first grade. I owe this to the patience and caring of the faculty. St. John Berchmans rates 5 stars!

Although SJB offers a rich curriculum, many after-school programs and a full-time summer camp, the staff is what makes this school exceptional. I am proud that my family is part of this special community!

SJB is a warm, community-based school with good facilities and great teachers and staff. My daughter LOVES going to school each morning and is excited to tell us stories about her teachers, friends and what she's learned each day. The after-school care and programs are really convenient for parents and fun for the kids.

SJB is WONDERFUL. The entire staff is friendly and you can see how they care for their students. Mrs R the principal knows all the kids names and really goes out of her way to make everyone feel like they are part of a huge family! There is no better school than SJB!!

My daughter wakes up every day excited to go to school. She feels respected, safe and nurtured. SJB provides an environment where each child's needs are met academically, emotionally, creatively and spititually. There is a continual growth process in this school, always striving to improve in each of these areas. In the 4 years my child has attended SJB I have seen her flourish. There is never a day that goes by that I doubt the decision I made when I chose SJB. Even when presented with the opportunity to place my daughter in a public school gifted program I chose to remain with there. This school provides so much more than just an excellent education, it provides children with the tools to become well-rounded, caring individuals.

My son had an excellent experience in the pre-k program at St. John Berchmans. His class had 18 children with a teacher and full-time assistant teacher. Both the teacher and the assistant were professional yet warm and caring. He enjoyed going to school very much. SJB offered early drop-off and extended care on an as-needed basis for an extremely reasonable fee. The flexible hours, fairly low tuition and -- most importantly -- warm and caring environment made this an excellent choice for our family.

St. John has been an incredible experience for our family. Everyone knows each other and all the teachers work collaboratively. All of the teachers are young, fun, and have a very hands-on approach to everything. The school offers great Title 1 tutoring, an excellent Rainbow program, and it s always very welcoming to parents. The 4th grade class had only 16 kids this past school year. There have been some changes in the past two years. They hired a new Head of Schools, Ms. Roket. She s been an okay addition to the staff but I feel she needs to be more authoritative with the staff and a bit warmer to the parents. Sometimes she comes across as very dry but that may just be her personality. She replaced Sr. Joyce who ran the school for more than 15 years and

I have mixed feelings about St. Johns. While my kids were in the primary grades I loved it. However, this passed year has been anything but. I feel like a certain teacher in an intermediate grade is just not doing her job well! I feel that more should be done to get away with just focusing reading instruction using only a basel program. There has to be more literature used as well. Teaching children how to read is not enough. Standardized testing today requires them to also be able to think critically about the text as well. Unfortunately, that is not what was taught this pass year, but she did come home with pretty pictures!! I just hope this is not a sigh of what's to come. Teachers should do a better job in communicating with parents. There should be more accountability for teachers by the administration.

After researching an exhaustive list of schools, I finally started touring my top choices. It sounds hard to describe, but the 'feel' of St. John Berchmans was just right for my family. From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by the friendly staff and introduced to all of the teachers during the tour. In fact, when we were ready to leave, my preschool daughter cried because she wasn't ready to go! I was impressed by their technology, diversity, wonderful outdoor playground, and the curriculum which included Spanish, computers, gym, music, and art. This school is a hidden treasure.

My daughter is going to attend PreK3 in the fall. She is currently in the summer camp program and we loveit. She goes everyday from 9am to 3pm and spends the rest of the day telling me about all the fun she's had. Its entirely play based and the faculty is excellent. Everyday when I drop her off they tell me about her friends and her interactions and again when I pick her up they give me individual highlights of her day. Its amazing. Granted, there are only five students per teacher during camp but its still an indication of their love for teaching and their dedication to individual students. I'm so happy we found St John's. When we came to visit we were given a tour by the principal, Sr. Joyce. I was immediatly taken by her love for the school.

My son graduated from St. John Berchmans School and is a sophmore at Quigley. My twin daughters attend St. John Berchmans and they love it because individuality and respect is taught daily in their curriculum. My children have scored in the 90 percentile in the Terra Nova standard test. Music, art, religion and computer classes are part of the course outline. Sports, Drama, and Voice and instrument classes are available after school. Parents do get involved with our school. I would encourage parents to call and visit the school on a school day. I did it! Safety and security was a concern of mine. Before school and after school daycare is available from 7:00am - 6:00pm. Children come from different ethnic groups. I am very content with St. John Berchmans School and so will you. Nelly
