This is an excellent public elementary school. Between the time that my older children attended and the more recent years that my younger children were enrolled, the school has made drastic changes in a very positive direction. The principal excells in his involvement in academic areas and extracirricular activities. Many of the teachers are the type of teachers who were 'born to teach'. They care about the students and they make the students actually interested in learning for the sake of learning. There are also activities and funtions throughout the school year that involve parents and really invite parents and students to be a part of the school as a whole. I was somewhat sad to say goodbye to Harriet Gifford School when my youngest two children graduated. It truly was a great experience for them and for me.

Overall this school is great. I love the teachers and principals. They are involved and love their students. The principal is caring, disciplined and knows what he is doing.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Illinois used the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and math, and in grades 4 and 7 in science. The ISAT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Illinois.
