Dont move here for the schools as the high school has poor extra curricular programs!, school has known issues with bullying but dont take care to resolvet, teachers and administration dont communicate with students and parents. some teachers in tenure need to update their teaching skills and testing. Grade schools although are great!
Horrible school district. If you want your child bullied to death by athletes or a huge lack of extracurriculars then go to Johnsburg. All of the other posts must have been by teachers. After 11 years in this district I could not be more disappointed in the lack of growth in technology or peer support.
Johnsburg is smaller than most schools around such as Prairie Ridge and Richmond-Burton. The teachers are above average in teaching and capability. Despite the lack of honors classes, our students are very smart and well-rounded. Most go to great universities such as UofI, Northwestern, and sometimes Ivy League schools. We have a small number of extra-curriculars that any student to get far in (unlike a big school) but it puts a lot of pressure on them because of that. But, our schools community service serves as five stars since many give to the community in some way.
Do not consider this school if you have honor students or students with special needs. They can deal with average high school students and the small atmosphere is OK, but students above or below average is where you will experience difficulty. They lack some of the opportunities and resources that other schools in the county offer as well. We transferred from another school in the county not expecting such a drastic change.
JHS is a small school where everybody knows each other. The sense of the small, tight knit community brings everyone together. The teachers at JHS do a nice job of showing the students that they do truly care about them and are there for them. My math teacher won the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award my senior year. JHS provides its students with a positive learning environment and a variety of activities to make every student be apart of the community.
I liked the fact that no matter how bad I or my fellow students acted and/or how badly we did on tests the faculty never gave up on us. They provided us with an education that would prepare us (the students) for the future. JHS would prepare you for a university by letting you choose classes that benefit your college/professional career. JHS also provided a smooth transition into community college; such as college credit through high school courses. Or how about allowing students to commute to other schools for extended trade based learning. Not to mention JHS' amazing graphics department and their fun athletic events. I will be graduating at my university soon and once I start a family I will hopefully be able to send my children to JHS.
Johnsburg is a small little school and town where everyone knows everyone. And a majority of the time we all get along really well. The teachers are great and are so helpful to the students.
My son is a student at Johnsburg High. I have visited the school during teacher conferences and met his teachers. We discus general class activity, grading structure,(I don't like curves)and if teaching and goals are set higher than state(no child left behind curriculum). In fact there are with many advanced classes, teachers review with the student grade, study habits, work loads, and reason for taking advanced classes and/or regular classes. Dedicated teaching staff! The school is older. It appears to be the school I attended thirtyfive years ago. Not evan comparable with room size, equipment, advanced technology that our Chicago schools have. Theres twentythree/twentyfour students per class and growing every year. This is a concern.Extracurricular activities are very well rounded with something for everyone.Coach's and upper class mates are supportive and willing to give there time when needed. I would like to see more language classes, Spanish and french only is not enough. Great School!
As a parent who moved into this district from a much larger school system in Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the overall high school expeirence my child is receiving. Granted, a school the size of Johnsburg has fewer offerings- both extracurricular and scholastic than a larger school. My daughter has the opportunity to truly be an active member of her high school and explore a variety of interests- the availabilty of spots on teams or in clubs is amazing by comparison to a larger school. Parents are always present at plays, and sporting events- football and basketball are community events. It has been amazing. Teachers live in my community- are invested in the success of their students. Johnsburg is an outstanding example of what is right about education.
