Develops honesty: Neutral

Though the school promotes it, obviously not all students are going to have such values.

I am part of the second class to ever graduate from this school (Class of 2015). Southland, overall, is a wonderful institution. Generally the teachers, staff and administration are helpful and are willing to help the students when needed. Security is pretty tight around the school as multiple of security guards patrol the hallways. The teachers are understanding of the long school day and so they try not to inundate the students with too much work. The college counselors are very helpful and they work actively to ensure that each student are ontop of their game in respect to both grades and college materials. Overall pretty good school.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective
August 17, 2015
Majority of the teachers care about the students and are very dedeicated to them. The ones who aren't tend to leave within one semester.

Amount of homework: Just right
August 17, 2015
This really depends on what grade level you are at. Generally, freshman and sophomore year are very smooth sailing and are not too troublesome. What makes those two grades somewhat challenging are just simply the students getting used to Southland. Junior year is when homework becomes more challenging. Southland provides and heavily promotes free ACT testing prep for all its students and have alloted times for each students to practice and work on raising their ACT scores. In addition to that, teachers start expecting more from students so they amp the school work up with papers and projects (mainly in Physics and British Lit). Trying to juggle ACT preping with homework, studying and free time can be troublesome if one dont have good time management skills. Senior year is a real killer as multiple of projects and papers are assigned and due around the same time in multiple of classes, plus working on college essays and more ACT prep.

Develops respect: Disagree
August 17, 2015
The problem with the school is that practically every month a new change happens within the rules. This is mainly because Southland is still a growing, new school so they are trying to figure out what works best for them. Not only that, but the administration rarely listens to the complaints or concerns of the students. Those two factors alone creates a somewhat hostile atmosphere, as well as a lack of respect for the administration as they tend to contradict themselves a lot.

Develops empathy: Agree
August 17, 2015
Because each class is small, a close-knit community and bond is created within each class and the whole school. Though not everyone gets along, generally there is compassion and empathy felt towards one another. We are "The Southland Family" as part of our creed says.

This is an excellent school. Southland Charter and the primary school, Aracadia, are the best in the district. My son went to Arcadia many years ago. Southland Charter has strong leadership, thru Dr Davis, just like Arcadia did with Mrs. Ransford. I think that is the key to providing excellent education, strong leadership at the top. Southland Charter is top notch.

(Quick Note: Many neighboring schools have been against Southland from the start, due to the school in taking funds from neighboring school to be ran and maintained. Although this may not be in fact the sure reason why as these bad reviews were given with no reason as to why, it should be kept in mind) I am currently a Senior in my last year at Southland College Prep. And I am happy with my overall experience here at Southland. As known, it is a 8am-5pm school day, (with exceptions of late starts or early dismissals.) The school offers over the top technology provided to the students to use as they please. This includes the multiple Mac computer labs and Windows computer labs and Ipads given to Juniors and Seniors. Southland is mainly an ACADEMIC school with a rigorous course load preparing you for college in beyond. The school is so college sighted that it works with all of the students individually to make sure they get into a college that is fit for them. (This is shown by the 100% college acceptance rate of the 2014 graduating class and the 2015's surpassing of $10,00,000 in accumulated scholarships)

One of the worst school in the district. Students were bullied by teachers and lied to. Nothing was ever done about the physical and mental harassment that seems to accure there daily. Not the type a place for kids to learn

Southland has been a beacon of hope for the community. Quite obviously it is a charter school and with this label comes all the good and the bad of the charter school movement -the long hours for both teachers and students, guinea pigism, constant changes, uniforms, lack of tradition, etc. The bad qualities of the school will likely be alleviated in years to come. The school is only four years already and it has managed to make a positive name for itself in just that period. It is tough at times in more ways than one and it is not a school for students who don't have the willpower to make it through what may seem like unnecessarily long school days or the monotony of school uniforms. Great school if you want to avoid the high cost of private schools or want an alternative to the default public schools in the area. The school needs more structure but it's not something that can't be fixed with time.

I think that they are headed in the right direction. However, it is so disturbing to see and hear new teachers here compare the students to where they have taught in the past. These comparisons are hurtful and uncalled for. Especially when you start mentioning to strangers the IQ and reading level of the students at Southland compared to your past students. Southland deserves better from their teachers.
