I'm a current medical student and I went to Homestead High school all 4 years. Academics is outstanding here. I was able to get so many scholarships for my undergraduate because of all that I learned here. This school really prepares you. The amount of AP classes that are offered are unbelievable. I met so many students at my undergraduate institution who came from high schools that only offered 2 AP classes. By taking AP classes, you become used to the rigor of college-level classes and are able to excel. So may pre-med classes weed out students whose high schools did not prepare them. Choose Homestead and you won't regret it if you have high academic standards. Very impressed of the education I received.

I'm a freshman this year at HHS and I was totally scared going in, but after the first week or so you become comfortable in your own skin and begin to meet new people and love your teachers! An overall great experience!

Homestead is the best public school in all of Indiana. The cirriculum cannot be beat and the teacher dedication is top notch.

I graduated from Homestead in 1982 and our third child will be graduating from Homestead this year. It is an excellent school from academics, athletic programs, arts, foreign language, and music. The student body is very diverse. My children were well prepared for college and were accepted at every college to which they applied. Parent involvement is very high!

Overall Homestead is a decent school. It is a great school academically and I waas excepted into every college I applied to because of this. However, Homestead is a horrible school socially. If your parents didn't buy you a brand new car and didn't make the most money you did not fit in. There are too many cliques.

Academic standards are good. However, as a new parent to Fort Wayne and two students in the high school I have found no communication from the teachers, guidance staff (unless solicited by me, or administration. There was no effort on the part of the school to make sure my children were matriculating well into the school.

Dear Lord. Where do I start? Well, I'm a current student, coming from two years at a different highschool(South Side) and those were great. First off, the teachers are great. The only weak department Homsetead has in my opinion is the arts. My other highschool's art department put it to shame. In short, he Academics are great. There is one absolutely huge problem about this school: The students. This school is cliqued up like no one's business. If you try to be friends with everyone, prepare for trouble. It's not going to happen. There are so many drugs circling around the school, it's almost disgusting. I've been asked at least 10 different times to participate in drug activities by different people. Even when walking in the hallways I've heard, 'I was so f**king wasted!' The student's behaviors aren't included in the test scores. Be mindful of that.

The support for my son even in a large school is very good. The freshman academy helps to ease transition into high school. Variety and quality of activities are high.

As a former student, I'd give Homestead a top rating. I went through the district K-12 and involved in what I thought were some of the top extracurricular programs in the state, if not the country. The music program is one of the best. The school has a lot of pride. I was accepted into every college I applied to with lots of breathing room. I may have been only in the top half of students, but the teachers work hard to make sure you end up where you want to, and I did. My kids will go to Homestead.

The teachers and staff at Homestead High School are good, but what you need to worry about is the students. It's very clicky. I was a student there, and that school is driven by money an power.

I hated Homestead. I think that the school is great for kids that learn 'inside a box' and fit a certain mold. But for those of us that need a little extra help end up falling through the cracks. The students were great, and most of the teachers were eager to help. However, as with most schools, there are a few bad seeds.

I went to this school and it was a great environment to learn. The school has a lot of extra curricular activities, it is very easy to get involved. The education that I recieved helped me get into every University that I appiled too.

Homestead is an awesome school. We have very good athletic teams. Our academis are ranked one of the best in the state for us being a public school. You make friends very quick. There are many other activites that do not have to do the sports. Those activites are very good as well. If you are thinking about going to Homestead then you have come to the right place.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the End-of-Course (ECA) assessment to test students in middle and high school in Algebra I, Biology I, and English 10. The ECA is a criterion-referenced assessment developed specifically for students completing their instruction in Algebra I, Biology I, or English 10. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
