I had two children attend this school. One was gifted. The other had learning disabilities. Both struggled to graduate. There was not cooperation from most of the teachers. There was not cooperation from the principal. There was not help from guidance. If we could have moved, we would have to get them out of this system. We struggled to help our children and when we asked the school for help we were asked - what do you want to do? They were the experts. They should have been able to give us suggestions instead of asking us what to do. I could go on and on but only with negative comments.
As a former student at BHS and HCMS ,I found the school and curriculum to be challenging and beneficial. My family was quite suprised and pleased to see how progressivethe schools were! However, all of the positives were completely eclipsed by the setting. The school system, as symbolic for the town and county, is quite hostile to new residents. This little area of IN is used to people leaving, not coming in, and is VERY slow to accept new people or ideas into their community. Located elsewhere, this school would undoubtedly be 5 Star!
As a former student and mother of 5 future blackford students I have to say this school is one of the best overall. It however is lacking a decent automotive course.
I would not recommend this school if you want your child to have an education. Unfortunately at the high school level, the teachers here are more concerned about what sports they coach after school than what they teach during the school day. I speak from experience as a past student who's questions and problems went ignored in the classroom because the big game was a more important topic to discuss. If the parents of this community would become involved, these issues could be solved.
The constant bickering between staff members are a major sore spot with this community, but what do you expect with a small town. Basically if the teachers acted the kids age it would be an all around better place.
The teachers and staff at this school are very concerned about each student. They go out of their way to assist as needed to provide a quality education for each student. Many programs are being operated to assist every student with the required education to graduate and be a valuable resource in the community. They offer many sports, clubs, drama, art, and additional programs if requested by the parents/students. They continue to enhance the education of the students by offering additional curriculum above the standard requirements. I have had two of my children graduated already and have two more children attending at this time and one more who will be entering the High School this next year. I would highly recommend this school. They pay attention to the students future and work with the families to provide a quality program.
