My daughter is going into 2nd grade next week at Merkley. We have had a great experience so far. Every time I visit, there seems to be a friendly student atmosphere. Mrs. Kijurna, one of the 1st grade teachers is a wonderful teacher. She has many years of experience, friendly, great with parent interaction and most of all, does a great job at teaching. We loved her. One area that I think the school can improve on is finding a 1/2 day K teacher instead of switching teachers every year. This school doesn't have a good reputation for their 1/2 day K program. The full day teacher on the other hand, is first class. I have heard and seen nothing but over-the-top compliments about Mrs. Rycerz. Overall, Merkley is a good school and from what I have heard, there are many other great teachers (in the older grades) too.
Had 2 children attand Merkley. One teacher was very supportive and involved in my daughter's development. The other teacher simply pointed out what my child was not able to do without suggesting ways of improvement. We have since relocated to Orlando, FL and all my children are on the Honor Roll.
I have only been a Merkley parent for a short time but really like the teachers and support staff at Merkley. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The secretary deserves an award for all that she does for the school. The Parent-Teacher Committee is hard working. They plan many extra activities for the students and their families. The teachers are always there for their students and have great attitudes towards teaching. The Student Council at Merkley is exceptional! My kids have loved all their teachers even though the styles of teaching were a little different each year. Even the kitchen staff and the custodian take time to talk to the students and get to know them. It really makes Merkley like a home.
I was a former student here a couple years ago, and I have to say Merkley was definitely hands-down a great school. ALL of the teachers are fantastic about making the kids want to learn, and altough there was a change in principal(which by the way, I do not like the newer principal), everything was still managed the same. Merkley has been very good, espically with the PTA and their contributions, i.e. book fair, fun fairs, holiday parties, etc. If I could go back I would.
I feel this is one of the best schools around. The teachers are great and really there for the students. They have a lot of extracurricular activities to offer.I am very happy with this school.
My daughter went to Merkley for 7 years and just ended the 6th grade this past week. Her years at Merkley were absolutely wonderful. She looked forward to attending school and learning. There are many strong qualities about this school including enthusiastic teachers, high concern for the students, caring from all the staff and a desire to help all students at all levels.
I just wanted to comment on Registration for the Kindergarten Class. It was painless and easy. I talked with the secretary prior to registration to make sure we had all proper documents and she was incredible and very helpful. While at registration everyone there made us feel very comfortable and my son was not nervous at all.
There has been many newer Teachers added to the school within the last few years. In addition to that, the Principal has been there for three years. The quality of the 5-6th grade Teachers are very high and the expectations of a student is great. They prepare students for the Middle School years. I wish there was more extracurricular activities. The school has a favorable and positive environment. The grounds are handled very well. What is so positive about this school is that it is nestled in a heavy residential area, a few blocks from the Middle and High School.
