Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My daughter would have been thrown away , if not for Herron high school. After being pushed into algebra as an eighth grader at her public MS/HS, she was failing in algebra before she even got to high school. Herron had her tested and we had our first case conference, all within two weeks. She went on to take four years of math, take many AP and college courses, and graduate with honors . She is beginning her Junior year at Ball State University, studying film. Herron taught her SO much more than math... They literally saved her life. Cannot thank them enough!

Herron High School has offered my son and my host son from Mexico a great learning environment upheld by character development and values. The faculty are second to none. They knew my son's strengths and areas for growth.

I've been at Herron since my freshman year and I'm now currently a junior (soon-to-be senior). There are some aspects of Herron that I love and some aspects that I hate. Firstly, the majority of the teachers are all great at what they do and are very knowledgable in their subject. All of the teachers I have had strive to make us better students, as well as better people. I think that students who complain about the rules haven't experienced the "real world". I currently have a job so I understand the importance of a uniform and being on time. Herron is trying to prepare us to be above-average citizens. I do, however, think that the way the administration goes about giving demerits to students is disrespectful. The administrators strut around the school pointing out any minor flaws and then make a point to embarrass the student for it. Also when it comes to teasing or bullying, I've noticed that it's been towards religious people most of the time. I understand that everyone has different opinions, but on multiple occasions, I've seen religious people be criticized and teased for what they believe. Herron prides itself on its equality, but from what I've seen, it hasn't been so.

You get in trouble for everything here and it's ridiculous. I hate it here! Ugh

I have been going here for a year and cannot wait to leave. While the school is very academically challenging and is college preparatory, they have some classes with a "one size fits all" idea. Some classes such as Math and Latin have options, but English and Social Studies don't unless you're taking AP. The students can be welcoming and friendly, but there are cliques here which they claim to not have. The teachers say they help, but if you need it its always "Come to office hours". They need to know that students have jobs, buses to catch and personal things to do and sometimes being at school at 8 am or staying until 5 is not an option! This school is also very strict. Students must be following every rule at every minute or they will be given a demerit. 3 demerits and you've got a 2 hour detention session on Friday afternoon. As stated, STUDENTS HAVE LIVES. Also next year(2014-2015) will require students to wear $40 pants with a small Herron Logo on it. Not everyone have $40 or more to throw around. Not many students even get wrote up for uniforms! Unless you have a socialite or overly academic kid, don't choose Herron! They may seem accepting but that's just a good facade.

My younger sister went here and it really is such an awesome school. She would've struggled at other schools but the diverse and unique atmosphere of this school really helped. She graduated, is in the military and in college.

My daughter would have been "lost" in the local high school with its huge population. In Herron, the teachers and staff know her and care about her, and she has more friends than she ever! In her second year at Herron, her self-confidence is soaring! She willingly works hard, and the extra help available for all of her courses in the form of "office hours" is wonderful. The downtown environment is actually a huge plus as well! I encourage other parents who want a safe, smaller, and caring learning situation for their children to consider Herron. We are very pleased and would not choose to go anywhere else!

Amazing, passionate teachers who love students and sharing knowledge with them. Students learn not only from the classroom, but also from participating actively in the downtown community in which the school is located. It's a win win situation for the school, students, and the neighborhood.

Herron is an amazing school. The students at this school are held to high standards of achievement and behavior. This is truly a school for scholars. If you are not aware, Herron received an A for this past year from the Department of Education. I would recommend Herron to any parent seeking to send their students to an environment of learning, welcomed diversity, and encouragement for excellence.

I have two children who go to Herron. After choosing a private school through 8th grade, I was nervous that the quality of education and attention would not compare. I was wrong. I am constantly blown away that my children get the education provided at Herron for free. The teachers are passionate and many have been there from the start or near the beginning. I trust my kids will be more than prepared to excel in college and in life because of the experience they are gaining at Herron.

Herron High School is the best. My daughter has been going here for 3 years, after being bullied at her local public school. She has a better attitude and more friends. I am so proud of this school.

My school is the most unique, inviting, and inspiring school I have ever been to. This school is so much more than an educational facility. It is stuffed full of amazing kids, nurturing teachers, and love. It is a home and a shelter that nourishes and protects. As our school continues to grow, the school's needs continue to increase, causing teachers and students to be creative with resources. While this is a great skill for students and teachers to learn, it can be stressful when trying to work off of donations and scraps. I love my students and my school and wouldn't have it any other way though. They are home.

Great school to be working at as a teacher. I have found Herron to be a place of excellence. The administration works hard to continue build on its short but strong past. I wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

HHS is an academically challenging school that offers a wide range of programs and activities for all students. My daughter is involved in 3 seasons of sports which we feel enhances her high school experience and broadens her colleges options.

Herron is a wonderful school with caring teachers and staff. As a parent, I find Herron a hidden gem. My daughter is looking forward to attending High School. Large enough to have sports but small enough not to get lost.

My brother was In the first graduating class at Herron. I followed his foot steps because my mother loved that Herron knows everybody. I'm currently entering my senior year and when most people hate their high school, I wouldn't attend anywhere else. Every teacher will work with you, as long as you show that you care about the class, you'll at least pass. This school is awesome. They truly care about students education.

This school seems to have a lot of turn over in teachers and students. There are better options for schooling in the Indianapolis area. Too many students and too strict. Students are not treated with respect as they are "talked down to" by the higher ups.

Herron is a great school! They really do prepare you for college. The class sizes are extremely smaller than a normal high school. They have an extremely wide variety of electives such as Technical Theater, Theater, Band, Drawing, etc. They also run on an A/B day schedule which is where you take classes 3 days a week rather than 5! Another benefit is that they start at 9 am Monday-Thursday. On Friday school starts at 10! The students are welcoming here and they have an amazing diversity level. This is a charter school which was recently renewed by the mayor for excellence. Looking for an Indianapolis charter high school. Look no further. Come to Herron, you will NOT regret it!

I absolutely love Herron! I've met some of the coolest people there. Not only are the students welcoming with open arms, the teachers are too. The teachers can always make us laugh and it seems like there is nothing they don't know. I am overjoyed that I decided to come to Herron and I wouldn't change my decision for anything. Unlike most kids, I can truly say that I can't wait to go to school and hate being sick and not being able to show up. What a great thing to be able to say about your school.

My daughter is a freshman this year at Herron. I am absolutely over joyed with the school. This has been such a wonderful experience. The teachers, staff, guidance counselors, deans etc work very hard and are hands on. They know their students, they are involved, and have high expectations. I always joke and say my child goes to a private school for free because that is how it feels. I would highly recommend Herron.

I am a graduating senior this year, and it has been an absolutely wonderful experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything. The classes are challenging, but the teachers are always willing to work with you if you have any problems. The faculty truly cares about students and is willing to do whatever they can so they succeed.

We are so fortunate to be able to send our daughter to this school. The small class sizes, classical curriculum and profoundly caring teachers and leadership are extraordinary, and my child loves the Latin requirement. Amazing theatre as well.

I currently attend Herron High, and there are plenty of good students here, but everyone of my teachers have truely helped me to learn, and not just to get the grades. Their point is to make me a better student and person. They really do care, and they treat me with respect. This makes me return with the same.

Herron HS is a classical liberal arts, prep school that offers more individualized attention for students than other HS I am familiar with in Indianapolis (or anywhere as far as that goes). The school was started in 2004 and it has grown in size and reputation by leaps and bounds since then. Located in the former Herron Art School buildings, you can consider their approach 'green' in the reuse of this marvelous old campus. The principal, teachers and staff are all very dedicated to each students success, not just in testing scores which will enable the school more funding (money), but in the long term success of all students. I feel we are blessed that my daughter can attend this very high achieving school.
