Cowan Elementary School is excellent. My oldest son has received special services since kindergarten. He has an IEP plan. Currently he is in the 4th grade. He has ADHD, sensory issues as well as developmental. They have went above and beyond in supporting him. It is a small county school. Everyone knows everyone and there is great communication among the staff. Teachers have made adjustments in there classrooms for my son to accomodate his needs. My youngest son is in 2nd grade and he has struggled with Reading and Math. They have a program specifically for children who have the same problems. He receives one on one services every morning to practice these skills and tutoring after school. Since receiving these services I have noticed a significant improvement. I couldn't have asked for a better school for my sons.

Cowan Elementary School is a GREAT small school setting. Everyone seems to be involved, care about the students and families, and it's a place where 'everyone knows your name.' My daughter's class in particular has really high parental involvement. All the teachers thus far (through 3rd grade) have been exceptional and have had great and positive impact on my child. I cannot say enough good about Cowan - wish the word was out! Would like to see more activity on teaching fundamentals of sports, and enlarging some programs - offering tennis, swimming, and such. Know there are limitations.

About the tests

Indiana uses the A through F School Grading System to assess the overall performance of a school. In addition, high schools were graded on four-year (on-time) graduation rates and college and career readiness indicators including Advanced Placment exam results and industry certification exam results.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
