Excellent Parent involvement, a bit political in some of the Fine Arts choices/activites.
This school is very well rounded in fine-arts, athletics, and academics!
A great school! Not only is this school well distinguished in athletics and academics, but the fine arts program is top notch. It was selected out of 10 schools in the entire country to recieve a Grammy Signature Schools award.
We have 3 kids in the Linn-Mar district and 2 of them are model students that we have very few problems with whatsoever. The third one is a different story though! He was adopted when he was 9 and he was significantly behind in school. He was reading at a pre-school level. It's a very long story, but suffice it to say that this school district forced us to send him to middle school even when we felt he wasn't ready. Repeatedly told him that he could not fail in middle school and he would be sent to the high school regardless of his performance and now we are paying the price in high school!
LMHS is an exceptional school in an exceptional district. It consistently scores academically among the highest in the 7-10 metro and surrounding rural high schools. Learning and activity programs abound for kids into almost anything. The band won the national Grammy High School award, athletic teams are generally competitive at the state level, arts programs are widely recognized, the robotics team scores high nationally each year, and other programs like FFA and industrial arts are widely recognized as top shelf. It is a big and growing school district well supported by the community and local business. If you like a slow pace without change, this is probably not a place for you. If you seek constant improvement, great challenges and opportunities for your kids, then certainly consider Linn Mar. It is a big enough place that if your kids are looking for either great opportunity or trouble, they can find it.
Academically the Highschool is very good, the kids aren't overly friendly and welcoming to new students, my daughter started her Freshman year here and didn't know anyone, she is meeting people this year but it has been a struggle. The school doesn't appear to have a dress code, the girls wear short shorts, and belly shirts in hot weather:(
My children attended Wilkins Elem. in the Linn Mar district and I found their program to be exceptional. We left a neighboring school district because my daughter had reading difficulties that weren't being addressed and the dedication Wilkins and reading support gave my daughter was exceptional. She is now at Excelsior MS, reading age appropriate and is an honor student. Both of my children have thrived at Excelsior MS accademically and in their extracurricular activities. With the new anti bullying programs in place, I have been impressed with the progress made. Linn-Mar staff and teachers are some of the best in the state and put the students first. I've been very satisfied with the communication from the schools and teachers. My son is attending Linn-Mar High School and the selection of courses is fantastic along with the availability of more academically challenging course. Lots of extracurriculars are available-something for everyone.
Marion has two high schools. Of those, L-MHS is more for college-bound kids where the other HS is the opposite. Support from faculty and parents at Linn-Mar is phenomenal. Fine Arts and other extracurriculars are quite good for this state. The football team hasn't been as good recently, but the basketball team won state in 2004. The school placed many All-State musicians this past year and usually does. There is a tremendous drama department and an award-winning nationally-ranked robotics team. Bullying seems to be a particular problem in the middle schools, and the elementary school programs do leave a lot to be desired, but Linn-Mar is overall an excellent system.
