I am both a parent now and former student. I feel as though the schools are probably a little better than average but are on a decline. I believe this is partly due to the economy sinking and partly due to school leadership not being effective. Most teachers/staff are good and care about their students and empower them to learn. The superintendent is not very well equipped to improve the school. The community focuses too much on sports and there is a lot of "name-playing." Probably this is true and comparable to to many other small communites. The music programs used to be excellent but have also declined in recent years. Maybe the saddest thing is that the Wrestling program used to be excellent and has also declined. Although I can see an effort is being made to improve it back t its former glory. Focus needs to be placed back on academics and the school needs to concentrate on preparing the children for the real world. The school district needs to communicate its needs and work more with the communicty to find ways to share the responsiblity of improving the school district.

Winterset High School is an awesome school. We are one of the top schools in the state because we have awesome teachers, great academics, and some of the best extra- and co-curricular activities in the state. As a student, I realize how lucky I am to go to WHS.

I also am mixed about the quality of Winterset Schools. They do not prepare children for the outside world and pretty much have the attitude that sports are everything...

I think that Winterset has some good qualities and some terrible qualities. I always heard how wonderful the school was, I have mixed emotions about it. There were times I asked for a tutor for my child, and they never got one. And I think that they do not issue discipline fairly and equally. I like the fact that the kids have to keep their grades up to play sports, my child had been on the ineligibility list and they learned that they don't just look the other way.

I believe Winterset High School is a very good school, with excellent teachers who love to teach and are very good at it. Winterset is one of the top ranked schools for education in the state. Students might leave during lunch but most of the time it's because they have check out. Winterset provides comfort for the young adults and lets them have a little bit of independence, because when they graduate they need to know how to survive in the real world and Winterset helps them do that.

To be honesth I dont believe Winterset is a very good school. The dont have good discipline. They dont really watch students very close according to what I have heard. Ex- students are constantly leaving during lunch hours and nothing is being done because teachers dont know about it. There is also a problem with teachers favoring kids only because they are the hottest sport star at Winterset.
