I was a student there in 2002-2006, the children were cruel and actually made a teacher quit from the harrassment. The students make cliques and picked on the outcasts. I only experienced two teachers in which we're truely inspiring, Ms. Jackson, grade 4, and Ms. Pelosack, grade 8. The librarians were also very informative, but overall the staff sucked. They were very rude and looked down on parents who were not to their "qualifications"
As a non-catholic, I hated going to this school. The kids were mean spirited and the faculty didn't care. It was a horrible experience and I'm glad it closed.
I have been a Shrine parent for 6 years now, and am extremely pleased with my children's education. I have 3 enrolled at the Shrine and all have been there since PreK. The school is small, with one class per grade and 12-18 students per class. All of the teachers get to know the students very well, and make the extra effort to provide individual support for each child. There is a wonderful Spanish education program beginning in PreK, and my children have shown solid academic progress every year. The school is very culturally diverse, and celebrates that every year with Diversity Day highlighting all of the families' heritages and traditions. They participate in social justice projects and receive a wonderful moral/ethical/religious education as well. All in all, I feel it has been the perfect choice for my children.
Its a good school, but i feel that im not challenged very well in our classes
Mediocre at best. The teachers complain about kids more than they teach them. Parents aren't welcome. I guess only certain parents receive decent treatment.
I am very pleased with the pre-k program.Academics are pesented but in a fun way. The teacher is nurturing to the children and supportive to the parents. This was a good choice for us this year.
The Shrine of the Sacred Heart School is excellent. The principal and the teachers provide an atmosphere of learning, caring and respect. The tuition and fees are as reasonable as one can expect from a small private school these days. At the Shrine of the Sacred Heart you will get real value for your dollars spent. You will get even more value if you take an active roll in the school and your childs education, both of which are encouraged and supported by the great staff we enjoy here.
I've been a 'Shrine Parent' for six years and I love this school. It has provided a wonderful learning environment for my children. Class sizes are small, the teachers truly care about the students. The School also offers soccer and basketball teams as well as many other important and fun programs and activities. If you are looking for a great school for your child please visit The Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mt. Washington. We would love to have you join our family.
This is my child's second year at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart and we all love it! She loves going to school and is learning so much! It is a nurturing environment with plenty of specials, art, Spanish, Music, etc. The only drawback is the lack of playing fields but there are many opportunities to play team sports on nearby fields. I highly recommend the school!
This is my childs second year and I must say that it has been quite nice.I do participate in school activities and I feel that does play a major role in your childs education no matter what school they attend you must find the time. Its like saying my child plays soccer but I never attended a game. Parents you must understand where ever you send your child there will be fundraisers that make up the offset its neccessary. I feel overwhelmed as a single parent but its needed. I feel the teachers are great especially Ms. Duncan and the principal is pleasant and very approachable and if I had any of the problems discussed my child would be pulled. Don't talk about the school move on and I mean this in the most sincere way.
1. This school is getting better every year. I have 2 children who attend the Shrine, and love it. 2. SSHS has many extracurricular activities for those who chose to participate. Just like anything else. You get what you put into the school. 3. The Shrine has caring & qualified teachers. They maintain a high standard for their teachers. If a teacher doesn't perform up to standard, they are given some training, if that doesn't work, that teacher does not remain at the Shrine. You can easily verify this. 4. The computer lab is state of the art and the Spanish program is top notch. 5. The only room for improvement I see is physical education class for the lower grades. I guess no school is perfect. 6. People who complain about greed, have not been to some of the other schools who have fundraisers every week for who knows what?
I think the Shrine could use a tremedous boost in their academic curriculum. Many new schools are being formed that will teach and provide training for students who are interested in specialized fields of study. This is a challenge for the Shrine and many schools like the Shrine. More educational choices are becoming available for parents, and they are taking advantage of it. When it comes to extra activities, art, sports, music, etc. The Shrine does fairly well. They have a pretty good choir under the direction of Mrs. Jackson, who is also a 4th grade teacher. If any school will survive in times like these, you need to have a Principal with strong leadership abilities who can bring the school from ground zero to a place of awesome academics, exceptional parental involvement, and teachers on a mission to make every child be the very best he or she can be.
The Shrine School has really improved in many areas over the last 2 years. We went through a bit of a rough time as the school was working through staff issues. Now the 1st grade program is thriving again with the leadership of Sister Jean. The middle school is out of this world with the addition af Mrs. Duncan, Mrs. Palask and Ms. Palasik. They offer a very challenging and dynamic middle school expereince. Ms. Jackson pushes the 4th graders to work to their absolute potential while demanding the utmost respect for one another. The current 8th grade class is moving on to continue their education at some of Baltimore's best high schools. Overall the 'new and improved' Shrine School is one of the best kept secrets in Mt. Washington and definitely worth a closer look if you are looking for a great education at a reasonable price.
First grade has improved now that the Sister is teaching. Parents and children are happy. However, it is a concern about the next few years. Middle grades seem o.k.
Most of the decent teachers are long gone from this school. The school and the church are so far apart It does say something when very few parrishoners both old and new do NOT send their children to this school.
The Shrine has intelligent, caring teachers. Challenging academics. Science fair was awesome! Good extracurricular programs. Parental involvement is pretty good. The students with involved parents seem to have the best experience overall. Parents who don't sit on the sidelines have a clearer perspective on what is really going on at the school. The involvement does not have to be during work hours - contrary to previous postings. Our school has an excellent track record for the students getting into and succeeding in great Catholic High Schools!
I pulled my children from this shool a few years back. I was disappointed that year after year the quality of the education seemed to get worse. I also had concerns that a lot of the kids in the school should not have been there. It is a private school and they can chose who to let in. One of the reasons we send our kids to a private school is to decrease the likelihood that they will have to be exposed to kids with serious behavioral problems. No, I am not speaking of a kid with ADHD, I am speaking about the kid who is aggressive and a constant discipline problem and basic drain on the staff. In addition I felt that the many of the teachers were lacking in skills and not managed properly.
We shopped all over town for schools. For 3 years we traveled 23 minutes to get there because it is so great!Closely knit families, fabulous spanish teacher, phys ed, and academics.PRINCIPAL is approachable, kind,& firm only if needed. We'll be sending our 2nd child here, too.Parents who COMPLAIN are not involved with the school or activities. They are the same ones who whine if asked to bring in a $0.50 box of spaghetti to make up a raffle basket.
We have had a wonderful experience at The Shrine. The staff is caring, the student body is beautifully diverse, and the academics are top notch! I have two children at The Shrine and they love thier school! The Home and School Association is extremely active, and they provide quality activites for the whole family. We are quite pleased with our choice of The Shrine of the Sacred Heart!
I completely disagree with the first two comments. My experience has been excellent with the principal, teachers, and the school. The key is parent involvement. If you have a concern, talk with the teachers and the principal. I have found the principal very receptive, available, and open to suggestions for change. On the 'greedy' comment posted: remember this is a small school with a relatively low tuition. The money from fundraisers is necessary to help enrich the classrooms and, at times, with the overall budget. If parents want to know more about the school budget and fundraisers, come to a Home and School Association meeting or arrange a time to speak with the principal.
