Teacher quality
Principal leadership
Parent involvement
Both of my children attend Calvary Lutheran. Very friendly atmosphere, teachers take an interest in your kids and parents are encouraged to be active in school activities. Teachers are excellent, school leadership is above average and academic programs are challenging for the kids. Highly recommended.
My child attended Calvary for the first time this year. I am very impressed by the teachers and staff members. This school is small, that is why I choose it. I find that Calvary's staff members are patient, loving and kind. I believe that the academic program, thus far has been impressive. Above all, I believe that this school practices the Christian values that it teaches our children. I would highly recommend this school to everyone wanting to place there child in a warm, nourtouring, Christian environment.
My family enrolled our children at Calvary after an exhaustive search of private and public schools in our area. We were drawn to Calvary by the updated curriculum, the bright and welcoming classrooms, the competent and concerned faculty and conversations with other parents. Is it perfect? No. Howevever, my kids caught-up to grade level (after falling behind in the public school they moved from), happy, well-adjusted and spiritually richer. Classes are small, teachers are attentive (and go above and beyond all the time) and parents are invloved. Bill & Arwyn Gohl
My son attended Calvary Lutheran School from third to fifth grade and received a wonderful education. I wish the school had middle school grades, so he could have continued attending there. The school had a routine: tests each week, books to take home, suitable temperature in the classrooms, quiet learning environment, and field trips. When he went to six grade at a city school I was shocked. Lutheran schools definitely provide a great education to the children.
As with any situation, sending your children to Calvery Lutheran is a mixed bag. On the one had, the classes are small, the teachers are caring, and the school is safe. Students gain a solid spiritual foundation. On the other hand, instruction is not great, teachers are ill-suited to support children with any significant academic needs, and co-curricular offerings are minimal. At the end of the day, I decided to keep my children here because they were safe and I could supplement their educational needs. But if either of my children were struggling learners, I would have to pull them.
I placed my children at Calvary Lutheran because I had just moved to Baltimore and was concerned about the violence in public schools. It was a tremendous mistake. My children were definately safe and the school was fairly disciplined (largely in part because really disruptive students were counseled out of the school or otherwise gotten rid of). However, there was no academic rigor. I ended up pulling them and putting them in the local public school down the street. Now that my kids are at Hamilton I discovered that they were months behind their peers. The staff at my children's new school has had to put in extra effort to get them on track.
I would highly recommend Calvary to parents looking for a school. The teachers are very patient and attentive to the children. The class size is small which is conducive for learning and curriculum is appropriate. I do agree that we need more parental involvement. This helps the school as well as the children in their learning and development. You can always tell if a parent is not involved with their child. My son will be attending the first grade this fall and we have no intention of leaving. Thanks Calvary for nurturing my child!
I have had three of my children attend Calvary over the past 5 years. I have gained enough experience with this school and have dealt with 2 principals, 7 teachers and a number of parents over the past several years. My children attended Calvary until Spring 2006. During that time, my children did receive a great spiritual education. They felt safe in a warm and loving environment. However, the school lacks academically. My oldest daughter went to public school for 4 years and attended 5th grade at Calvary. Most of the work was review of what she had previously learned in public school and she was bored most of the year. I pulled my other kids out last year and am glad I did. I learned the hard way that Calvary's basic curriculum does not meet the standards of a good private school.
I am a proud parent of 2 children attending Calvary. My children attend Calvary because of small class sizes and wonderful teachers! I can only say wonderful things about how much my children have grown while at Calvary!
My daughter(7th grade now) and my son(5th grade) have received a quality education. They have learned academically, emotionally, and spiritually. The small school has helped my children feel secure and loved. The teachers all look out for all of the students. My daughter, now at a college prep school is suceeding beyond belief!my son is so secure at this school that moving onto middle school does not worry him at all.I would recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a quality education in christian loving environment.I stombled cross this school years ago, and fell into a blessing!
To recommend that school will be a disservice for our future leaders. My child is currently attending this school and will not be attending next year. The teacher has no idea what she is doing and when questioned said that she was preparing them ready for the next school year - HELLO....It was only September! To voice a concern is like talking to the wall. The round about ways and denial of things said is truly amazing. If you have a problem with the teacher, let me warn you now, don't go to the principal. If you want honesty, professionalism, and trust, I suggest you put your child elsewhere. Trust me, it not worth the headache. This school is a joke.
This is my child's first year at this school. I am not impressed at all. The work my child is receiving this school year. He received last year at his prior school.
My two children ages 9 and 7 have attended Calvary since Kindergarten. I believe both children have received a quality education. In addition, they have been taught lessons about how to treat other people in this world. Since this is a relatively small school, all the teachers know all the children. It is a wonderful atmosphere for children to grow intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. Due to the size of our school, we are not equipped to offer what many other large private schools can but we love it here all the same.
My daughter is currently at this school. She has been here for two years and is doing a fantastic job. She is learning academically, spiritually, and socially. The teachers are open and honest and willing to help in whatever way possible. The only negative thing I can say about this school is that the parents do not get involved as much as they could. The school is only as good as you make it. In my opinion the parents, not the school, need improvement. I highly recommend Calvary Lutheran!
I would not recommend this school. Child did not receive vital instruction in language arts and reading between K and First Grade. When I approached the school with my concerns (they did not approach me), I was told on one ocassion that my child was learning disabled, on a second that my child had ADHD (although I had never been made aware of any behaviors out of the ordinary for her age and only infrequent occasions) and on the third that my child was 'lazy' in a note written by a teacher and seen by the principal and a school board member. May 2002
I would not recommend this as a school of choice. My daughter attended Calvery Lutheran two years ago. My daughter was in the kindergarten, which was taught by the principle. She was taught absolutly nothing. She couldn't even sound three letter words out. When the education questioned I was told by the teacher/principle that my child was too aggressive, and out spoken. However my chid was transfered to Shrine Of The Little Flower, and was behind. I was told by a teacher that it was because she did not receive the basics. I had the school place her back grade K,and ever since she has been an honor roll student. Hats off to Shrine Of The Little Flower.
My son graduated two years ago from Calvary and is doing very well in school with the skills acquired at Calvary. I recommend this school.
