Arbutus Middle offers a variety of after school activities. The teachers are always willing to help the students whether it be from math homework to personal issues. The principal is on a constant journey to improve her school any way she can. Arbutus Middle also has two diverse language classes, Spanish and Chinese. AMS has great academic achievements for outstanding students. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a great deal of contests such as Patriot's Pen, Champions for Courage, the Math-A-Thon, Math24,and a Carver writing contest! The only thing that our school could honestly improve on is having a student voice group. Students in this school are so engaged, and they have wonderful ideas on how we could improve as a whole. It would be great to see those students do something about it, after all don't we teach them that they can make a difference if they so desire?
I was a student at AMS for all of my 3 middle school years and loved it! I made so many great friends at AMS and built incredible relationships with my teachers. All of the staff is so welcoming and friendly! Both the teachers and students of Arbutus Middle have great spirit; AMS is a tight knit school with an abundance of pride. I joined 5 various clubs at Arbutus which is only a small fraction of all the clubs available. My classes were the perfect mix of fun, yet challenging and by the end of my years at AMS I felt completely prepared for high school. My middle school experience was amazing and I will always consider myself to be an Arbutus Eagle!
My daughter has had a wonderful time at AMS. We were a little concerned at first because we had heard negative things in the past, but so much has changed since Ms. Feeney became principal. I can not find the words to describe how awesome she is and the teachers as well. The school offers many after school clubs and has an amazing music program. My daughter is even taking Chinese this year! My son is looking forward to going there next year as well.
I can not say enough about how impressed I have been with Arbutus Middle School! My daugther came there last year, from a private school that had closed. It was the BEST thing we could have done for her. The staff could not be more welcoming and comforting to her and us, her parents. She has done fantastic there, gotten straight A's, and is in GT classes! She is involved in the music program and Mr. H could not be a better teacher! She has developed wonderful frienships! The teachers and staff are really involved with the kids and I couldn't ask for more postive energy then we get from there. The principal is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I can honestly say that I will miss being involved at AMS after my daughter graduates this year! I pray that the staff is similar when my son gets to AMS a few years from now. THANK YOU FOR A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE AMS!!!!!
Love this school!!! My daughter have thrived in all areas. I have never been so impressed with the staff and dedication to the students.
My son has been a special needs student for two years and has had a great time. All the teachers have been helpful and supportive. The administration has also been supportive. Communication with the school is open and I hear from the staff regularly about both problems and successes. My daughter starts in the fall and I know she will have a good expereince as well.
I have two children at Arbutus Middle School and have been thrilled with the quality and care of teaching. My children were challenged academically and had a number of assignments that required creative and integrative thinking. The Principal is supportive and friendly and sets a terrific tone. I think Arbutus is a hidden jewel in Baltimore County. The teachers really care and do quite a bit with the resources they have. They also have some great afterschool clubs. Overall I think the strength of the schools is the teaching and administrative staff.
Have had three children go to Arbutus and have the same issues with faculty. Teachers are not interested in helping children when they need help, it's up to the parent to push for help when needed! And teachers don't let you know ahead of time that your child is having any problems until you recieve their report cards. Guidance is no help at all in follow ups with teachers.
The administration leaves more to be desired. Bullying is a tremendous issue at this institution and begins with the teachers, faculty and administrators to trickle down to the students. I removed my child from this school mid-year due to the lack of support and leadership.
My daughter has had a very smoothe transition from Fallston Middle in Harford County to Arbutus. I heard many warnings about the school, but did my own research. I walked the halls with my daughter and the children were fine. The staff was professional and the guidance counselor was very kind to my child. The work load is no different than HCPS. Take time to investigate Arbutus for yourself. I am sure you will see the evidence of Principal Johnson's hard work and accomplishments.
Everyone who is saying Arbutus Middle is a horrible school really needs to do research. I am a freshmen in Highschool and im in all gt and honor classes. When i was in 7th Grade there was a student right in my class who scored a 100 on the Highschool Assesment. There was about 30 kids who graduated with 3 or more highschool credits, and already had their70 hours. Also the class of 2009 basically pulled ams out of school improvement. Ms.Johnson is amazing, she may be tough but she is leading ams in the right direction. Part of the reasons students don't suceed is because they dont try. And not a single class i was ever in was mixed, it had all advanced students or all lower student.
Been there 3 years. I have learned so much. For the people who say the teachers don't do anything- not true. Every day I see all my teachers periodically checking their e-mail and answering parents. On the morning announcements, there is always something new happening. Every day, a new club is up, or there was a bus change and we need to know. Everyone is committed to helping the students succeed. As for the people who say that the 6th grade teachers are horrible, yeah I know, it's rough. But, middle school is a big change and I learned all the rules in 6th grade, which was a big help. I am in all GT classes and have honor role, all because of the teachers and staff of Arbutus Middle School.
AMS is socio-econimcally diverse--so the values on education from the parents is varied. It's hard to teach kids who come in with more emotional baggage than any adult should have, and to motivate them to succeed. My daughter is in top classes--so her teachers don't have to spend their time putting out fires--they actually get to teach--but, like any other 21st century school--it's tough for teachers to teach when kids don't care and don't try.
Arbutus Middle School is horrible for 6th graders just starting out. The 6th grade team (most of them - not all) Mr. Montgomery is excellent but most of the othe teachers are young and arrogant. The have know concern or care for these 11/12 year olds and no patience with the at all. My child has not learned much this year because the teachers are more concerned about silly issues than teaching and trying to mold the 6th graders into their new enviroment of middle school. The Vice Principal is horrible. Not understanding on bit, not easy to talk to and also very arrogant. The guidance department is awesome and if it was not for them I would not have made it through this year with my child in this terrible teaching enviroment.
I am beyond dissatisfied with Arbutus Middle. The educational value of the children is placed very low. The teachers coming in are all so young that the students don't take them seriously. The teacher interaction with the parents is horrid. To get the teachers to give positive feedback is something close a miracle.
I've been to this school for 3 years and I absolutely love it there. It's really cool
Arbuts is a wonerful school. I am a 7 grader there. I'm an honor student . So many of my friends are too and when there is a school full of students like this there has to be a reason. I think that reason is Ms. Johnson. She is inispirational and is a wonderful role model for the students at Arbuts Middle School. Any kid would be lucky to go to this school.
Arbutus Middle has a new principal this year and it's for the better. She is smart, innovative and dynamic. Hopefully, she will continue to lead the school in the right direction. Hats off to you Principal Johnson.
The English/Reading department is very strong. They have a few amazing teachers in 6th grade.
My daughter started sixth grade this year at Arbutus Middle. I have been very pleased with this school. The teachers use e-mail to advise you about upcoming tests as well as study groups. They are also great about responding to your concerns by both e-mail and telephone calls. I have no complaints about this school. The teachers are caring.
