This coming fall, 2012, I will be applying to grad school at the University of Baltimore with the hope of being accepted to start in January 2013. At the time I will have children in 10th, 5th and 2nd grades.
Our high school is a charter school with a heavy load of advanced placement classes mixed with fine arts. Our elementary school is also very academic but has an art teacher, choir teacher,PE teacher and has had a science teacher. The special education teacher there has also been great working with my son who has mild ADD and does not test low enough to be in one of her classes.
What we want is something comparable to what we have. A great school, teachers that can think outside the box, administrations that understand that all kids are different, etc... I also want and elementary school that I do not have to fight for my middle child's IEP.
Congratulations on your application to grad school! You didn't say if your 10th grader is a boy or girl, but we were very happy with Western HS (last all girls public school in the US) when we were living in Baltimore. Our daughter (9th grade) was able to take AP classes, the choir was great (good track team) and the academic rigors was exactly what we (and she) were looking for. Of course, you get out what you put in! (By the way, Polytechnic Institute is another great HS that shares the grounds with Western)
We also had a daughter in 5th grade and a daughter in 7th grade. They attended Rolland Park Elementary/Middle School. Again, we were very pleased with the teachers, the girls stayed challenged and the diversity in the student body as well as the faculty was important to us. An amazing music/art program along with great 5th grade English, Science and Math teachers.
I hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions! Good luck! 75667
