I am the parent of a recent graduate of WLHS. Mr. LeMon and the administration are excellent. There are many excellent teachers at WL who are engaged in the students' education while at WL and beyond. Another bonus of WL is that the student population is very diverse. My only complaint is that more parents need to be involved.

Wilde Lake High School is a great school. The teachers and administrators are talented and highly engaged. The extra curricular activities are diverse and welcoming of all skill levels. The students are challenged and supported academically to succeed. We are fortunate to have such a great school in our community.

I am a parent of a student at Wilde Lake High School. I have been very happy with the schools efforts to provide the highest standards of education to my daughter these past few years. I am an advocate for higher education and would recommend this school to any parent who is intending on moving into this area.

WLHS has an exceptional principal and vice principles. Most of the teachers are exceptional, but a few of them need more training in dealing with diverse students/parents. However, any concerns are quickly addressed and resolved. If a parent is involved, the school offers an excellent academic and extra curriculum activities; that your child can participate in. The parents and teachers are the most generous and proactive group that I have been involved with. My child loves the school, and she has quickly formed many friends. She is involved in sports, band, and still maintains high grades.

My daughter graduated Wild Lake High last year. Outstanding teachers and administation, AP and GT classes, drama and music program which is second to none. My daughter is University of Maryland honors program with wonderful education from WLHS and great memories.

I graduated from WLHS and it was a wonderful four-year educational experience. Almost all of my friends at this school ended up going onto Ivy League or equivalent top-notch liberal arts schools and universities, like Wake Forest University where I attended. The English program, the amazing music and theater programs, the GT programs, the challenging teachers, so many things about the school prepared me well for college level coursework. It was actually cool in my class to be applying to 7 colleges including the "safety schools and the reach schools" and most of us ended up at the reach schools, and we went to colleges across the nation knowing more than other students about diversity and culture. We still have reunions and I will always be PROUD to be a WILDECAT!

My daughter is finishing up her first year at WLHS and we have become true Wilde Cat fans! She is getting a solid academic (GT) background, has teachers who are engaged, creative and communicative, and she is THRIVING in the music program. She has made several good friends who are truly fine human beings. I'm grateful that they found each other. The school is beautifully diverse. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, I see kids from many of the county's schools. The WLHS are much better adjusted with fewer of the scarier problems than in many of the higher regarded high schools.

I am a parent of a student about to graduate from Wilde Lake High School. I have been extremely pleased with the administrations efforts to provide the highest standards of education to my son these past 4 years. He has been excepted to three colleges and is awaiting to hear from several others he has applied to. With that said, high school is not a baby-sitting facility but a two way street of communication and support between the parents and the teachers. I am an advocate for higher education and would recommend this school to any parent who is intending on moving into this area.

Howard County Public Schools are some of the best in the State. This High School is a strong school with good teachers and motivated students that want to excel. A realtor recently mentioned to us that this school has had more students move on and attend ivy league colleges and universities in the last two years than any other high school in the district. I would strongly recommend that if you like the area and are considering buying a home that you go by the school and take a tour and talk with the administration.

Would not recommend this school to anyone that has a choice to go elsewhere. I came from a private middle school and liked the freedom of public school but soon saw how anyone could fall into the wrong crowd. You need to have strong morals and know what your willing to do and what your not. I have been accepted to prestigious colleges but other kids from my middle school went the other way and have no plan for next year in january of their senior year. You can come from wilde lake with a great transcript and do great things but the easy path leads to another type of institution.

I'm a parent of several Wilde Lake grads and say the experience is a decidedly mixed one. Some teachers had little or no interest in teaching students, whereas at the other end several were excellent. The guidance counselors also varied from exceptional to 'mailing it in.' Unfortunately we often were paired with 'mailing it in' counselors and weren't permitted to switch. There is a wide range of sporting activities with an equally wide range of coaching competencies (a couple of coaches were terrific; a couple...not-terrific). 'Big Time' pervades in the athletic approach -as it does at most large public schools - and I'm not sure there's much room or interest in a lower to mid-pack athlete trying to simply experience sports. In a nutshell, it's a big school in the very commercially-based, transient city of Columbia in Howard County - a county as well-known for excellent schools as it is for a parental/communal spirit that revels in self-celebration of the rigid band of political/social concepts which it accepts. This is reflected in its school system. Wilde Lake has its great moments, but if you have a choice in schools, choose elsewhere.

I love Wilde Lake. The fine arts programs here are excellent! The sport teams may not win more then they loose but the level of fun, teamwork and learning on the field makes up for it. The diversity is outstanding, I am very lucky to be in this environment of peers from almost all imaginable backgrounds . I am almost a straight A student and most of the teachers are phenomenal! My ninth grade year, ending soon, was been a memorable and wonderful learning experience.

The students of various ethnic and religious backgrounds get along so well and work so hard to achieve in education, sports and community activities. They treat the physical plant well ...not like some destructive teenagers. They are proud of their school and its activities.

WLHS is the best school in the county for many reasons: it's diversity, it's spirit, it's academics, it's athletics, it's extracurricular activities, it's teachers, it's administrators, it's staff and it's building. My daughter graduated from the 'lake' in May, 2008. WLHS has prepared her well for college. I am proud that she is a 'wildecat'

I am currently a sophmore at WLHS, and I have to say that the school is amazing. It is clean, organized, the teachers care and always do things to make teaching better. The principal Mr.Whitacker is ok, he is somewhat strict but its good because it keeps us in line. I lived in Baltimore up untill freshman year (06-07) and I was amazed how excellent the staff is,the athletic department is great. Coach Shoemaker is the best track coack and has trained me so well. The parents are very involved and help out constantly at athletic events. Its is really a great school. I recommend it for any parents looking at high schools in howard county. This school has had such a possitive impact on me, because of how diverse it is. Jesse Jackson even came to Wilde Lake High as a guest because of the diversity and ethnic differcences.

Excellent Staff and Faculty, heavily diversified both academically and racially, high SATs/ACTs scores recorded in the state and just wonderful students. My son graduated in 2007!

My family have moved here from Texas. My daughter attends WLHS. She was attending another school in Columbia until we moved to the Beaverbrook. She did not like the experience of the other school. After seeing how happy my daughter is about attending Wilde Lake. I know she is very excited about learning. It is an excellent school!

Child has recently come from a private school in Chicago. I have had the luxury of comparing private vs. public and Columbia vs. Chicago, IL. At this point in time the education and attention that my child and myself have received from WLHS has exceeded my expectations, as I compare WLHS activity to a private school in IL. I have received information from teachers and feel that I am being properly informed. Like any school, there is room for improvement, so far I am pleased. For those reading this, it is important to note that I have experience in education for I work at a University in Maryland and I have been in higher education for some time. This school is culturally, economically and ethnically diverse. I feel that this is a positive for my children and allows them the opportunity to experience the real world in a controlled environment

Due to redistricting from Centennial after his freshman year, my son was not too happy to go the WL; all his friends were staying at Centennial. After 2 months his attitude changed and he told me, Mom, I am learning a lot at this school, not just academically, but about how rough life can be for some of these kids and yet they still come to school to learn. They feel priveleged to have friends, teachers and a principal that care for them. The only expectations they have is that of getting a good education. They do not expect a new car for their 16th birthday, the latest electronics or newest fad (although I doubt any of these would be turned down!) They realize that you have to work to earn the things that priveleged kids take for granted. My son graduated (Class of 2000) with honors from 'The Lake'.

Wilde Lake was a good experience. The learning environment was what you made of it, enrolling in more challenging courses will involve a lot of work. Most teachers are willing to help any student, especially when the teen wants to improve. The administration's presence is known, and staff is extremely welcoming. WL will give a student what he or she puts into it. The more a teen gets involved, the more they'll enjoy it there. Sports are awesome, no one is left behind at WL. Celebrate diversity and break stereotypes. The school building is well kept, and looks amazing. The James Rouse Theatre is an experience in itself. Time at Wilde Lake was time well spent.
