Hanscom Middle School is an amazing school with great leadership and innovative, caring, and enthusiastic teachers and students. Our children love being part of this close-knit community. The MA test scores may reflect children who recently moved to MA and are adjusting to MA curriculum that may be different from their previous schools and the unique elements of MA standardized tests and scoring. Teachers immediately evaluate all new students and teach to their needs. After a year in the school, with the dedication of the teachers, our scores improved dramatically. The school also offers additional learning opportunities for advanced students. The building is old, but there are plans for a new school coming soon. The teachers and staff are compassionate to the lives of children of military members. The students are supportive of each other and quick to accept new students and make friends. This is a very special school.
Lincoln Administrators should be so professionally proud of themselves. Taught students by example how to successfully administrate governments funds for military contracts and show the children how diversity can bring federal relief funds. So proud of all of you.
Hanscom Middle School went through a major transformation last year with the hiring of a new Principal. If you ask the students, parents and staff it was a very positive change. HMS is also working on building plans for a new school starting in 2011. In regards to MCAS scores, the data of interest is the individual score along with the number of years enrolled at Hanscom, that would tell the true story. HMS is a good school, the new Principal has heard the parents, but we need to continue to make sure that the Lincoln School Committee understands our needs.
I have just pulled two of my children out of this school. This school is into themselves way to much meaning teachers gossip in front of the children ,There Gym is very old and needs to be rebuild,They focus on there needs not the childrens needs.they are quickly to say your child has add and he or she has never had an issue the years befor.
I am afraid that I cannot offer many stars for the middle school. I am not impressed with the involvement of the teachers and the principal. The school spirit is the lowest that I have seen through all of my 4 kids schools. There is no school spirit. The students arent involved in much, because there isnt much to get involved in. The academic emphasis is lacking in a serious way and the test scores show it. Parents need to supplement their childs education in order to transition from middle to high school and not have them behind. There arent huge negatives about the school but equally I have nothing overly positive to say about the school. I recommend seeking other options for schooling if you live on base and value a good education.
I would like to thank all the parents from 2007 that finally took a stand against the Lincoln administration and demanded changes after years of being ignored and seeing the continued pattern of decline. Results are a new playground for middle school, new math program, and most important that Lincoln know they will be held accountable and not take advantage of Federal funds. I have been here many years and know the before and after. It did take those parents contacting the Department of Defense in Washington to put a fire under the Lincoln Administrations feet quickly. In the past military families just accepted the system until a group of 2007 parents said, 'Lets change it now for the future kids of Hanscom'. Thank you 2007 Parents. Seeing the before and after, I know now how important parent involment is not only with the teachers but the head administration.
This is a great school with a very caring, professional and well educated staff. Test scores are what they are because of the high turnover of students, but if you look at the scores of students who have been at the school for more than a year they are fantastic. The science program has issues but the math was just changed and is very challenging.
This school needs new administration and hold teachers accountable. High percent of kids are not prepared for Bedford High or a state move to another school. Look at the state scores (very low), and the teaching stategies are a combination of being outdated and inexperience. Lack of Science and Math program to keep the kids at respected grade level. We pulled our child and put in private to prepare for High School. Should of rented outside of Hanscom to avoid school, and now we are stuck paying for private.
My children are at the end of their firs year, and I am not happy with this school. It is very unorganized, lunchtime volumne/behavior is not controlled, kids are allowed to keep interupting during class time only to get a 'pink slip' for bad behavior. I agree with others, the basic average student is not challenaged due to bad students being allowed to control teachers time. Administrators just want the Government Pension, teachers have protected jobs due to government contract and this unproffesional behavior shows in the school district. Next time I would go private or rent in Bedford or Lexington, MA.
I just pulled my three children [from] this school. It is a small school with just military children attending, but most have discipline problems and the staff is overwhelmed. It is a shame to see the studies lowered to the lower performing student. The goods students are being pacified and not challenaged. They should be teaching Latin and not Spanish twice a week.
If you have a child that has excelled prior to comming to Hanscom you will need to supplement their education in addition to attending Hanscom. They do not challenage children. Postive: it is a safe environment, Negative: you will need to supplement your childs grade level to have them prepared.
3 stars. I give the Middle School a 3-star rating. And I give it that for the teachers who really do a great job and care about the students. However, I agree with the parent who gave the school a 2 star rating. The school is in a very affluent area and sometimes I get the impression that we are considered the 'low class' of the district. Considering our children have a worldside education and their 'real world' military lifestyles you would think they would be treated with more respect. Fortunately, this is the only school district (out of many and in many states/countries) that I have encountered this kind of attitude.
