Gill Elementary is a small, rural school that promotes connection within its immediate and extended community. 'Community' is the theme at the start of school and this is even extending to the natural environment surrounding the school. Its more than 20 acres are utilized for hands-on science exploration, promotion of natural curiosity and physical exercise. My son just began kindergarten and was welcomed, embraced and nurtured as he began this huge transition. His physical needs are a priority regarding his multiple food allergies and asthma and his safety and integration are a priority for the school staff. The school offers constant 'all-school' interaction which bridges the gaps between ages and learning experiences and enables the students to be involved in all aspects of learning and mentoring. The greater community is also considered in the meal planning as an emphasis is placed on local foods and hence healthy food choices. Field trips happen regularly to connect students with the wealth of learning experiences in neighboring communities and local assets, such as the neighborhood lending library. While the school system lacks in funding it abounds in dedication, creativity and open-mindedness and this has created a socially progressive, academically solid, successful school. Most of all, we, as a family, went from anxiety regarding our transition to relief as it became abundantly clear that our children will thrive in this wonderful school (as generations have before them).
