Derby is the best school anyone could possibly imagine. My children go there and so do all my nieces and nephews. They are all extremely happy at Derby. Derby has excellent teachers and the students are very respectful towards one another. The academic programs exceeded my expectations; the teachers challenge everyone and make sure all the students are on the same page. I recommend Derby Academy to every parent and child.
When I first registered my child a few years ago I had such high expectations. Somehow in the back of my mind I knew I would be disappointed. And guess what... I am. The number one reason I sent my child here is because I felt the public schools were overcrowded and my child who is bright and shy would somehow not make it there. I was also worried about bullying in the public school. But not only does bullying happen at this school, it's tolerated. The teachers and administration make it seem as though it's your child (the one being bullied) that's the problem and they are reluctant to do anything about it. Also, the facilities are below average and for what they ask for in tuition (and they raise it every year) it is just not worth the price-not even close. In addition the students treat each other poorly. The way they speak to one another is downright shameful. I don't know if it's the area in general, learned behavior from their parents or both. Needless to say we will not being coming back. At this school the nice families will leave and the not so nice will stay. Isn't that always the way?
This is the best school our children and grandchildren have ever gone to. A challenge for the gifted student, but nurturing for those that need a little more.
I have been a teacher at Derby for over 12 years, after having worked in several different teaching venues across New England. Derby Academy exceeds all my wildest expectations both personally and professionally. The level of expertise and genuine caring for each child is at the highest level. Every man, woman and child is celebrated for their unique abilities and encouraged to learn beyond their comfort levels. Teachers are eager to collaborate with others and stretch their own professional goals. There is at the heart of Derby an atmosphere of sincerity and love which makes Derby much, much more than a school, but a family. I cannot believe that I can be a part of such a wonderful community that truly lives up to their motto to improve both mind and soul!
This school has met and exceeded all my expectations. My child is thriving here and we couldn't be happier. The teachers are truly dedicated to their students and they really go above and beyond for them. The small class size is amazing and the reason we placed our child here. We are excited to have our youngest be a part of this school next year. Thank you Derby!
I have one child enrolled at Derby and one child going there next year. I love derby and all the teachers that go along with it. I think one of the most special things that derby has is the sports program. For students in fourth and fifth grade, the class called 'sports' is one of the highlights of their day. They have it everyday, and learn the fundamentals of all sports. This prepares them for the inscholastic sports they will play in sixth grade on. I also love the campus! It provides a safe, friendly and open enviorment for anyone attending school!
I went to Derby academy. I must say, the academics were worse than the public school alternatives. It wasnt worth it academically. In terms of music, art, and sports, it was nothing special. The sports options were limited and not particularly intense, the arts program was about the same as any public school, and the music was almost non existant save for occasional student solos. It was not worth that much money. Derby was essentially public school quality but a more attractive name.
We have three children enrolled at Derby and we could not be more pleased with this school. At the Lower School, students are encouraged to achieve at the highest possible level, but they are never left behind. At the middle and upper schools the course load increases, but support is always available from talented and dedicated faculty members. The School has a strong arts program and competive athletics are available in an inclusive manner. We strongly encourage all parents to consider Derby Academy for their children.
