I love everything about this school! My kids are very happy and love their teachers and friends. The programs and activities developed by the school are a plus to their education. About the teachers. Well, the teachers deserve a great standing ovation!!

Excellent, engaged teachers and an active, tight-knit PTO make this a great school and community.

The teachers are amazing and tend to work together as grade-level teams. They are currently implementing the responsive classroom approach, which includes: "Morning Meeting—gathering as a whole class each morning to greet one another, share news, and warm up for the day ahead Rule Creation—helping students create classroom rules to ensure an environment that allows all class members to meet their learning goals Interactive Modeling—teaching children to notice and internalize expected behaviors through a unique modeling technique Positive Teacher Language—using words and tone as a tool to promote children's active learning, sense of community, and self-discipline Logical Consequences—responding to misbehavior in a way that allows children to fix and learn from their mistakes while preserving their dignity Collaborative Problem Solving—using conferencing, role playing, and other strategies to resolve problems with students"

Newton in general and Underwood in particular values the importance of building character and imbuing responsibility in its student body.

I have 3 children at Underwood, and they all love it. Underwood is and always was a very special, neighborhood school. Committed parents, amazing teachers and staff, and very nice kids. My eldest has been there for 4 years. The PTO holds quite a few fun events each year including the Spring Social, Mystery Dinner and the Spring Carnival. The playground is a kid and parent favorite and is one of the few shaded play spaces in Newton.

Underwood is an excellent school. I have two children currently attending, the oldest has been there for 5 years. The class sizes are good. The only negative about the school is the teacher turnover rate is higher than desired. Still a great place to send your kids.

The nice school with the nice teachers. Kid loves to go to school. I believe he will gain more in the new school year.

Underwood is filled with caring, responsive and amazing teachers who take the time to get to know the needs of each student. Through the use of co-taught classrooms, teaching assistants, and supplemental offerings the School can provide a wide range of services to engage and challenge all the children. The School community is small so the children quickly get to know all the teachers and staff, as well as each other. The parent community is actively engaged in many different activities to support the School. Underwood is an amazing elementary school.
